Ruffini’s Rule

We have taken a general look at the division of polynomials in the


previous section. However, an important case in the division of
polynomials is when the divisor is a binomial of the type x-a, where a
is a whole number; for example (x-1), (x+2)…

As well as using the method outlined in the previos section, we can


also use what is known as Ruffinis’s rule.

Ruffini’s rule is basically used when the polynomial being divided


has just one letter (variable) which is x and the divisor is (x-a).

If we divide 3x4-7x3+60x-11 by x+2

3 -7 0 60 -11
-2 -6 26 -52 -16
3 -13 26 8 -27

The quotient is 3x3-13x2+26x+8 and the remainder –27.
