ARE YOU A MANAGER OR A LEADER?


Exercise: Answer T (true) or F (false) for each item. Then check the scoring key at the end with discussion
questions.

T F 2. I am more a hands-on, get-it-done person than a visionary.
T F 3. I like to create the "big picture" and help carry out the plan.
T F 4. I prefer not to get involved in the implementation of a plan once I help create it.

T F 6. I like to plan, delegate, and carry out tasks.
T F 7. I would rather be given structured directions for an assignment than design an assignment.
T F 8. I like to set meeting agendas and then take charge of meetings.

SCORING:
• If you answered true to questions 7, 2, 1, you prefer managerial roles.
• If you answered true to questions 3. 4, 5, and 8, you prefer leadership roles.
• If you answered true to questions 3, 6, and 9, you prefer managerial and leadership roles.

DISCUSSION:
After reading how you scored on the overall questionnaire, answer these questions:
1. After reflecting on how you answered these questions, what do you believe your preferred style is:
leader, manager, some of both, more leader than manager, more manager than leader? Explain.
2. Is it possible for you to learn and assume leadership roles if you found you are more of a manager? Or
is it possible for you to learn and assume managerial roles if you found you are more a leader? Explain
your reasoning.
3. If you found you are a mix between manager and leader, how comfortable are you having to take one
role over another when the situation requires? Explain.
