They are Mt. Cangshan and Lake Erhai in front of us.

hán jiā ： méi cuò ， dà lǐ xī kào cāng shān ， dōng lín ěr hǎi 。
韩 佳 ： 没 错 ， 大 理 西 靠 苍 山 ， 东 临 洱 海 。
Correct. Backing against Mt. Cangshan in the west and facing the Lake Erhai in
the east,

dà lǐ xī kào cāng shān ， dōng lín ěr hǎi 。

大 理 西 靠 苍 山 ， 东 临 洱 海 。
Dali is located to the east of Mt. Cangshan and west of Lake Erhai.

dà lǐ ā bù jǐn zì rán fēng guāng měi lì ，

大 理 啊 不 仅 自 然 风 光 美 丽 ，
Dali is not only famous for its natural beauty,

更 是 一 座 历 史 文 化 名 城。
but also its historical culture.

zǎo zài sì qiān duō nián qián jiù yǐ jīng yǒu rén lèi jū zhù le 。
早 在 四 千 多 年 前 就 已 经 有 人 类 居 住 了 。

The Nanzhao State and the Dali State

suǒ chù de nián dài zhèng hǎo shì zhōng yuán de táng sòng shí qī 。
所 处 的 年 代 正 好 是 中 原 的 唐 宋 时 期 。
existed during the same period as the Tang Dynasty and Song Dynasties of the
central plains.

nà shí hòu dà lǐ zuò wéi nán zhào guó hé dà lǐ guó de dū chéng，

那 时 候 大 理 作 为 南 诏 国 和 大 理 国 的 都 城，
as the capital of the Nanzhao and Dali states, Dali became the political,
economical

jiù chéng le yún nán de zhèng zhì 、 jīng jì 、 wén huà zhōng xīn 。
就 成 了 云 南 的 政 治 、 经 济 、 文 化 中 心 。
and cultural center of Yunnan at the time.

diǎn xíng de zhōng guó shì chéng mén，

典 型 的 中 国 式 城 门，

从 清 朝 开 始 古 城 的 四 周 就 有 城 墙 了，
The city walls were built in the Qing Dynasty

ér qiě ne dōng nán xī běi gè yǒu yí zuò chéng mén。

而 且 呢 东 南 西 北 各 有 一 座 城 门。
and there was one city gate in each direction.

dōng mén jiào ěr hǎi ，xī mén jiào cāng shān，

东 门 叫 洱 海 ，西 门 叫 苍 山，
The east gate was named Erhai; the west gate was Cangshan;

běi mén jiào sān tǎ ，nán mén jiào shuāng hè。

北 门 叫 三 塔 ，南 门 叫 双 鹤。
the north gate was called Santa; and the south gate Shuanghe.

dà niú ： zhè dōng biān yǒu ěr hǎi，xī biān yǒu cāng shān。
大 牛 ： 这 东 边 有 洱 海， 西 边 有 苍 山。
The city is to the west of Lake Erhai and east of Mt. Cangshan;

可 是 这 三 塔 和 双 鹤 的 名 字

Because we have the Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple out of the north
gate.

zhì yú zhè shuāng hè ā ，

至 于 这 双 鹤 啊 ，
As for Shuanghe,

chuán shuō hěn jiǔ yǐ qián rén men shì yán zhe xiān hè de zú jì
传 说 很 久 以 前 人 们 是 沿 着 仙 鹤 的 足 迹
it was said that the earliest dwellers followed traces of fairy cranes

lái dào zhè lǐ dìng jū de 。

来 到 这 里 定 居 的 。
and found Dali;

suǒ yǐ ne dà lǐ yòu jiào hè tuò ，

所 以 呢 大 理 又 叫 鹤 拓 ，
therefore, Dali was also called Hetuo,
 jiù shì xiān hè kāi tuà de dì fāng 。
就 是 仙 鹤 开 拓 的 地 方 。
which means the place found by cranes.

wèi le jì niàn zhè gè chuán shuō ，

为 了 纪 念 这 个 传 说 ，
To commemorate the story,

nán mén jiù jiào shuāng hè le 。

南 门 就 叫 双 鹤 了 。
the south gate was named Shuanghe.

dà niú ： yuán lái shì zhè yàng 。

大 牛 ： 原 来 是 这 样 。

那 咱 们 就 从 这 洱 海 门 进 去 ，
Let's enter the ancient city from

jìn gǔ chéng kàn yi kàn。

进 古 城 看 一 看。
the Erhai Gate.

hán jiā ： hǎo 。

咱 们 走 进 古 城 看 一 看 。
Let's take a look inside the ancient city.

dà niú ： dà lǐ zhēn bú kuì shì wén huà míng chéng ā ！

大 牛 ： 大 理 真 不 愧 是 文 化 名 城 啊 ！
Dali deserves the name of a famous cultural city.

hán jiā ： ò ， nǐ zěn me zhī dào de？

dà niú ： nín qiáo ： wén xiàn míng bāng。

大 牛 ： 您 瞧 ： 文 献 名 邦。
Look! Wen xian ming bang.

kě shì wǒ zhǐ zhī dào “ wén ” hé “ míng ” zhè liǎng gè zì de yì sī。

可 是 我 只 知 道 “ 文 ” 和 “ 名 ” 这 两 个字 的 意 思。
But I only know the meaning of wen and ming.
hán jiā ： ò ， yuán lái shì dà niú yù dào bù dǒng dé de cí le 。
韩 佳 ： 哦 ， 原 来 是 大 牛 遇 到 不 懂 得 的 词 了 。

zhè gè “ xiàn ” ne jiù shì zhǐ shú xī diǎn zhāng zhì dù de rén 。

qīng cháo yún nán tí dū jiù jué dé

清 朝 云 南 提 督 就 觉 得
The provincial commander-in-chief of Yunnan in the Qing Dynasty

dà lǐ rén wén xīng shèng ，

大 理 人 文 兴 盛 ，
considered Dali a place with prosperous human culture,

yú shì jiù bào qǐng cháo tíng bān fā le zhè kuài biǎn ，
于 是 就 报 请 朝 廷 颁 发 了 这 块 匾 ，
so he reported to the imperial court and applied for this plaque.

suǒ yǐ ne zhè zuò lóu yě jiù bèi mìng míng wéi wén xiàn lóu le 。
所 以 呢 这 座 楼 也 就 被 命 名 为 文 献 楼 了 。
Therefore, this building was named Wen Xian Mansion.

dà niú ： dà lǐ zhēn bú kuì shì qiān gǔ wén huà míng chéng ā ！

大 牛 ： 大 理 真 不 愧 是 千 古 文 化 名 城 啊 ！
Dali is really worthy of the name of a famous cultural city.

Is there any relic of the earlier Nanzhao State?

Most historical remains of Nanzhao State no longer exist.

But there is a Nanzhao Dehua Stone Tablet.

hán jiā ， nǐ dài wǒ lái kàn shí tóu gàn ma ā ？

hán jiā ： zhè kě bú shì yí kuài pǔ tōng shí tóu ，

韩 佳 ： 这 可 不 是 一 块 普 通 石 头 ，
It is a Dehua stone tablet,

zhè shì yí kuài dé huà bēi ，shàng miàn hái kè zhe zì ne ！

这 是 一 块 德 化 碑 ， 上 面 还 刻 着 字 呢 ！
not an ordinary stone. It is carved with characters.

dà niú ： hái zhēn shì de ！

大 牛 ： 还 真 是 的 ！
Indeed.

shàng miàn kè le duō shǎo gè zì ne ？

上 面 刻 了 多 少 个 字 呢 ？
How many characters are there?
hán jiā ： yuán běn ā ， zài zhè shí bēi shàng kè yǒu wǔ qiān duō gè zì ，
韩 佳 ： 原 本 啊 ， 在 这 石 碑 上 刻 有 五 千 多 个 字 ，
Originally, it had over 5,000 characters;

dàn shì xiàn zài ne zhǐ shèng xià qī bǎi duō gè zì le 。

但 是 现 在 呢 只 剩 下 七 百 多 个 字 了 。
but now, only about 700 characters remain.

hǎo zài yǒu lì shǐ zī liào jì zǎi le shí bēi shàng de nèi róng 。
好 在 有 历 史 资 料 记 载 了 石 碑 上 的 内 容 。
Fortunately, we have historical documents that recorded contents of the tablet.

hán jiā ： zài táng cháo de shí hòu ，

韩 佳 ： 在 唐 朝 的 时 候 ，
In the Tang Dynasty,

táng xuán zōng zhēng fá nán zhào guó 。

唐 玄 宗 征 伐 南 诏 国 。
Emperor Xuanzong launched a punitive expedition

dàn shì ne ， bèi nán zhào guó dǎ bài le 。

但 是 呢 ， 被 南 诏 国 打 败 了 。
against the Nanzhao State but was defeated.

yú shì nán zhào guó wáng jiù kè xià le zhè kuài bēi ，
于 是 南 诏 国 王 就 刻 下 了 这 块 碑 ，
So the king of Nanzhao had the tablet engraved

zài shàng miàn jì shù le zhàn zhēng de jīng guò ，

在 上 面 记 述 了 战 争 的 经 过 ，
to record the course of the war

yǐ jí biǎo dá le xī wàng hé táng cháo yǒu hǎo xiāng chǔ de yuàn wàng 。
以 及 表 达 了希 望 和 唐 朝 友 好 相 处 的 愿 望 。
and his wish for a friendly relationship with the Tang Dynasty.

dà niú ： hán jiā ， nǐ kàn ， wū guī tuó shí bēi ！

大 牛 ： 韩 佳 ， 你 看 ， 乌 龟 驮 石 碑 ！
Han Jia. Look! The tortoise is carrying a stone tablet.

hán jiā ： zhè shì bì xiè 。

韩 佳 ： 这 是 赑 屃 。
This is a bi xi.
 chuán shuō ā tā xǐ huān tuó zhòng de dōng xī ，ér qiě ne xǐ huān wén zì 。
传 说 啊 它 喜 欢 驮 重 的 东 西 ，而 且 呢 喜 欢 文 字 。
It was said that bi xi likes to carry heavy things and loves words,

suǒ yǐ gǔ dài de shí bēi dǐ zuò kè chéng bì xiè de yàng zǐ 。

所 以 古 代 的 石 碑 底 座 刻 成 赑 屃 的 样 子 。
so, many ancient tablets bases were carved in the form of bi xi.

zhè kuài ne jiù shì yuán shì zǔ píng yún nán bēi ，
这 块 呢 就 是 元 世 祖 平 云 南 碑 ，
This one was the Yunnan Tablet inscribed by the first emperor of the Yuan
Dynasty.

dà niú ： ò wǒ zhī dào yuán shì zǔ jiù shì hū bì liè ，

大 牛 ： 哦 我 知 道 元 世 祖 就 是 忽 必 烈 ，
Oh. I know he was Kublai Khan.

nà me zhè kuài shí bēi jiù shì jì niàn tā de 。

那 么 这 块 石 碑 就 是 纪 念 他 的 。
This tablet must be in commemoration of him.

hán jiā ： dāng nián ā ， hū bì liè píng dìng le yún nán，

韩 佳 ： 当 年 啊 ， 忽 必 烈 平 定 了 云 南，
After Kublai Khan put down Yunnan

miè le gǔ dài de dà lǐ guó 。

灭 了 古 代 的 大 理 国 。
and destroyed the ancient Dali State,

wèi le jì shù zhè cì zhàn zhēng de jīng guò ，

为 了 记 述 这 次 战 争 的 经 过 ，
he ordered craftsmen to carve this tablet

tā jiù mìng rén kè le zhè kuài píng yún nán bēi 。

他 就 命 人 刻 了 这 块 平 云 南 碑 。
to record the course of the war.

nà wǒ men xiàn zài suǒ zài de zhè gè dì fāng ，

那 我 们 现 在 所 在 的 这 个 地 方 ，
Where we are now once was the

jiù shì dāng nián hū bì liè dà jūn zhù zhā de dì fāng 。

就 是 当 年 忽 必 烈 大 军 驻 扎 的 地 方 。
cantonment of Kublai Khan's troops.
