‘The Cat and the Open House
Sunday June 27, 2010 from 1PM to 3PM was my open house
in Bradenton Florida at a very nice villa.
My name is Suni Bymns, on the S.0.S ‘Team with Keller Williams Realty of Manatee, I
was early for my open house and I had put all my signs out and was just putting the one in the
yard at 12:45PM, when a car pulled up and stopped in front. I thought “oh, here is someon
already for the open house.” ‘The car door opens and out steps the owner of the Villa who is an
87 year old lady who had listed the villa with me after she moved into an assisted living,
apartment near by.
I called “hello” to her, she called “hello” back and she walks around her car to open the
passenger side of the car, It doesn’t open, “oh no oh no oh no”...she eries and starts pulling on
the handle, and starts back around to the drivers side, I said “Mary, what is wrong? She said, as,
she is trying to open the drivers side of the door, “I locked my keys in the car.” 1 said, no
problem I will call AAA and have them come out and let you in. But she is frantic now and says,
“oh no, ob no please open, Mary what is wrong, she replies, I also locked my eat Queenie in the
car. Here her cata calico named Queenie was in a canvas carrying case on the front seat. It was
92 degrees outside, and about 3 or 4 minutes have passed. I iet Mary know I would call AAA,
911 and even the nearest Fire department if I had to. After calling AAA, who couldn't let me
know how long it would take, but they would put it on priority. I called 911, got a wonderful
dispatcher, explained the problem about the 87 year old lady and her cat locked in the hot car, and
that I was her Realtor at an open house. She took all the information, and said she would call the
Fire department; they usually handle this type of call. I let the dispatcher know there was a Fire
department at the top of the street, and they could be here in 3 minutes
‘Three minutes later a BIG fire truck pulls up in front of the villa, and 3 BIG firemen step
out. They asked if | had a wire hanger, hoping not to have to break the ear window. I explained
that the villa was unfurnished. We looked, just in ease, but no hangers. One of the other firemen
‘went to the neighbors; they only had plastic ones, the third neighbor had one and they proceeded
to try and open the car door. Mary is at the driver’s door still very upset and trying to get it open
with her house key, I put my arm around her and said, come inside Mary the firemen will get
your cat out, we don’t want you to have a heat stroke out here. 1 took her inside and had her sit
down with the aie on,
Now, she had no water because the water was shut off, so I asked the neighbor Bill if he
had some for Mary and her cat when they got he- out of the car. He brought a dish with water
and bottle of water, we had the garage door open, and he got a chair and sat in the garage.
After Mary was her feeling better, I called AAA. They had called a lock smith to come
and get the cat out, but it still was a 20 minute wait. About 15 to 17 minutes had already passed.
‘The firemen were really getting concerned and worried that they might have to break the window
to get Queenie out, On the way back into the ville, the neighbor Bill said “you know your losing,
a lot of open house customers”, I see them driving up to the sign, then they see the fire truck and
the 3 BIG firemen at the car, and they keep on going,
All of a sudden I heard a pop and the ear door was open. One of the firemen grabs the
carrying case and rushes into the villa with the cat [sat on the floor and we got Queenie out, She
was a little warm, but she was okay. By now my hair was soaking wet, [ had my jacket off and
my silk blouse was stuck to my back, the cat is hairy and sitting on my lap while I try to get her to
drink some water, and there is cat hair all over me. Mary is sitting in the chair her hair was all
wet, but she is happy and smiling. The 3 firemer come in and we both thank them profusely.
‘They look at me on the floor with the cat in my lap and ask, “can we do anything for you?” 1
look up and say NO this is just another day in the life of a Real Estate Agent. They all laughed
and so did I. Mary and Queenie are doing fine!!! My partner, Tammie Pickard says, “she was
0000 sorry she missed the open house.”
