Republic of the Philippines
Province of Iloilo

Message of the Governor

As my last term of office will soon to end, I am
thankful to all Ilonggos for giving me the chance to serve
as Governor of the Province of Iloilo for three
consecutive terms from 2001-2010.

I am proud to say that I have delivered to the

people my best public service without reservation.
During my governance, our Province has gained a better
standing and has developed to amore inviting economy.
During the Capitol Siege I stood for what is right and
uphold the rule of law manifesting that we Ilonggos
won’t give up in to oppression. Through catastrophes,
the Iloilo Provincial Government has been an institution of hope for the people. We as
Ilonggos manifested our enormous strength and resiliency during the calamity.

I have stopped illegal fishing and have brought back the bounty produce of our
seas. I have stopped illegal gambling and have empowered our people through skills
trainings and boosted the capacity of our people through micro finance and livelihood
potentials. I also fought cattle rustlers, drug lords and criminals were brought to the
arms of the law.

We have been honored six times for our good stewardships of our environment
through the Gawad Pangulo sa Kapaligiran. I have led a good example in public service
having been awarded by the National Association of Social Workers as “one of the most
outstanding governors” in the country in social services. This example I believed was
emulated by employers of IPG in the span of 9 years as their offices and them were
honored for exemplary public service.

It is my profound wish that our Province and its profile will continue to be
attractive, grow mature to a better understanding and experience of what is a quality
life should be.

NIEL D. TUPAS SR.

Message of the Vice Governor

I join everyone in the Provincial Planning

and Development Office as they published the
Annual Provincial Profile CY 2009.

The Province of Iloilo is blessed with rich

natural resources and a safe place for new
investors. I have no doubt that people from
other places will surely appreciate if they try to
visit and see our tourist destinations.

I encourage everybody to explore and experience life in the

Province of Iloilo. It has the bounty and beauty of nature that will
bring us in the heights of success.

As we struggle and hurdle all the odds that may come our way,
cooperation, competence and courage must be in our hearts and
minds in fulfilling our dream; a more peaceful and progressive Iloilo
Province.

I pray that the Lord God Almighty bless and guide us all.

Message of the PPDC

This time marks another excellent

year for the Provincial Planning and
Development Office in carrying out
programs and projects for the Province of
Iloilo. One of the major endeavors of this
office is the publication the Provincial
Profile which is being carried out annually.
This profile is a compendium of data in a
given year collected from various
government agencies.

Noting Iloilo to be one of the fasting growing economies,

this Profile primarily serves as reference to aid investors to
venture in the Province of Iloilo. It also serves as basis for
research, planning and development for both government and
private sectors.

Hence, it is my great joy to join the Research and Statistics

Section and the rest of the PPDO staff in the publication of the
2009 Annual Provincial Profile. May this profile provide relevant
information for the public to know Iloilo up close and to
appreciate its potential to be one of the promising provinces in
the country.

May God bless all of us.

The New Iloilo Airport is located at Brgy. Duyan

- Duyan, Cabatuan, Iloilo with 2,500 m. x 45 m. runway
and a new terminal building with state-of-the-art
computerized facilities to accommodate flights from the

4. Tourist Destinations

Iloilo. A beautiful province resplendent with natural wonders, rich history, and
warm, engaging people.

Research and Statistics Section 52

Provincial Planning and Development Office
Annual Provincial Profile 2009

Iloilo, they say is the heart of the Philippines. It is a small province with a
big package. It prides itself as the center of education, trade, commerce and tourism
in the region. It lies in the midst of both; air and sea traffic. From Manila, three major
airlines have daily roundtrip flights that take about an hour, by boat, two shipping
lines have regular trips taking about 20 hours, 12 times weekly. A relatively short trip
and you are magically transported to a totally different environment. If ever, a place
could truly be called a melting pot of people and
cultures, Iloilo is it.

Iloilo is a junction over which Malay,

Spanish, Chinese, American cultures met in the
course of centuries. It has a colorful history that
stretches back to a rich pre-colonial culture and
the arrival of the first settlers, the Malayans
sometime in May 1212. Sailing across the seas
from Borneo and landed at the mouth of
Siwaragan River at the southern tip of Iloilo in
the town of San Joaquin. Its modern history
began in 1566 when the Spaniards under
Legaspi, established their first settlement in
Oton. Christian doctrine was propagated,
with the church as their house of worship
and where people acquired their first
education.

Today, over 1.8 million people with

distinctive cultural heritage live and work
side by side. Everywhere you go in Iloilo,
you will see many breathtaking discoveries
where one is pleasantly surprised. Images
of Iloilo in the eighteenth century show
manorial old houses, in their ornate facades
combined with Classical Western influences
and folk art motifs. Relics and mementos
of the past abound. Mute yet eloquent,
reminding everyone of Iloilo’s colorful past
bequeathed to the present. Wonderfully
atmospheric old architecture blends
harmoniously with its cosmopolitan
landscape.

Provincial Planning and Development Office
Annual Provincial Profile 2009

Peaceful climate, dynamism of the local economy, a better quality of life, rich
pool of skilled workforce, and excellent accessibility and linkages are factors that help
maintained its competitive position among other regions in attracting private
investments and penetrating new markets for its products.

Iloilo is a place of perfect balance. It is fast-paced yet relaxed. The luxuries of

cosmopolitan living in Iloilo City, the province’s capital, complement the breathtaking
beauty of the great outdoors.

Iloilo truly offers more than the usual. Culture and arts. Destinations. World-
class festivals. Cuisine. People. Wherever you go, whatever you do, you will always
enjoy the warmest and friendliest welcome in Iloilo.
