Dear Representatives Israel, King, and Bishop:
Tam writing on behalf of BP America Inc. in response to your May 21, 2010 letter to Mr.
Lamar McKay. I understand from your letter that you have concerns about the possibility that
oil from the Deepwater Horizon spill could reach the New York coastline and the Fire Island
National Seashore. I can assure you that BP shares a strong sense of urgency in addressing the
oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
‘We continue to work diligently to contain the spill and to stop the leaking well. Progress
on the relief wells continues, and we are conducting containment operations to capture oil from
the spill, along with skimming and dispersing operations. In addition, we are focused on efforts
to mitigate the impact of the spill along the coastlines of the Gulf states.
BP, along with the U.S. Coast Guard and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA), will continue to monitor conditions that might affect the path of the oil,
including the loop current. In particular, NOAA is continuously tracking the movement of the
oil spill with surface and aerial-based monitoring, ocean current modeling and weather forecasts.
NOAA is using computer modeling to estimate the spill’s future movements and projected
shoreline impacts based on predicted and observed meteorological and oceanographic
conditions. According to NOAA on June 30, two additional vessels recently departed Miami to
conduct further studies on the Loop Current and area ecosystems in response to the Deepwater
Horizon spill.
BP will continue to work under the Unified Command structure to stop the flow of oil
and clean up the spill, and we will honor our legal obligations with regard to the environmental
and economic impacts of this spill.‘Thank you for the opportunity to respond to your inquiry. If you have any questions
please feel free to contact me or to have your staff contact Liz Reicherts at (202) 457-6585
Sincerely,
