b. Discuss the four main type of memory.

i. SIMM
ii. DIMM
iii. DDR DIMM
iv. RIMM

Single In-line Memory Modules (SIMM)

-It is a small circuit board that can hold a group of memory chips.
-Typically, SIMMs hold up 8 (on Macintoshes) or 9 (on PCs) RAM chips.
-On PCs, the ninth chip is often used for parity error checking.
-Unlike memory chips, SIMMs are measured in bytes rather than bits.
-SIMMs are easier to install than individual memory chips.
-SIMMs were invented and patented by WANG Laboratories. One of Wang’s scientists, James
Clayton, invented what was to become the basic memory module, now known as a SIMM in
1983.
-The first variant of SIMMs has 30 pins and provide 8 bits of data (9 bits in parity versions). They
were used in 286, 386 and 486 systems.

Dual In-line Memory Modules (DIMM)

-Comprise a series of dynamic random access memory integrated circuits.
-The modules are mounted on a printed circuit board and designed for use in personal
computers, workstations and servers.
-Have separate electrical contacts on each side of the module.
-Standard DIMMs have a 64-bit data path.

Double Data Rate Dual In-line Memory Module (DDR DIMM)

-low profile (LP) height of -1.2”
-Roughly twice as fast as standard RAM
-Double the rate of speed at which standard SDRAM can process data.
