Huawei UMG8900
All-IP Based Converged Media Gateway

Migration to an All-IP network presents many challenges, but pairing a flexible and robust media gateway
with a softswitch is the perfect way to reduce network costs, support all-media operation and improve the
overall network reliability.

Highlights Future requirements for different media types and mixed access
methods require the adoption of an All-IP network. It is critical that this
•• Single media gateway for CDMA, transformation is done in a way that allows the maximum flexibility, while
GSM, UMTS and IMS ensuring that there is a minimum of excess investment in up-front costs
and in continuing operational costs.
•• Supports innovative solutions for
improving transmission efficiency With Huawei Unified Media Gateway, Carriers can build a flat network,
•• Reduced maintenance achieve improved voice quality and reduce transmission requirements. Due
•• Enhanced QoS and Voice Quality to the advanced capabilities of the UMG8900, operating an IP core network
can be done more easiliy than managing the existing TDM core network.
•• Proven reliability - over one billion
lines in use

Data Sheet

The UMG solution allows operators to use IP connections on all

the interfaces, including Iu/A, Nb/xx and Mc/xx. It can also be used
to deploy with both TDM and IP bearer on the same interface. For
operators who need to reuse the existing TDM transmission system, IP
over TDM is available.

In addition to flexible networking capabilities, the UMG solution can help

to reduce the CAPEX and OPEX through the compression of speech, which
can save up to 60% on IP transmission or up to 70% for TDM transmission.

To improve the voice quality, a number of advanced techniques are

employed:
•• Tandem Free Operation and Transcoder Free Operation (TFO/TrFO)
•• Packet Loss Compensation
•• Static/Dynamic Jitter Buffer
•• Comfortable Noise Generation
•• Automatic Gain Control
•• Acoustic Echo Cancellation
•• Electrical Echo Cancellation
•• Noise Compensation
UMG8900 •• Noise Reduction

In order to make the maintenance of All-IP networks easier, the

Huawei UMG solution provides automated monitoring of the quality
WireLine Wireless of the IP Bearer netwrok. The quality can be reported to the MGC.
IMS According to the report, the MGC can make the response, controlling
the call access, or routing the call through a better bearer. This
UMTS MGW
IMS-MGW technique helps the interworking of core network and IP bearer.

LE BSC •• Loop back for IP speech
•• Dialing test on the specific IP address
•• Dialing test on the specific EC/TC
•• Voice Recording
•• The detection of IP address conflict
•• VRRP+BFD

Flexibility of access methods and support for any type of media are
hallmarks of future networks. With one physical MGW, the UMG
solution allows operators to deploy with CDMA, GSM, UMTS or IMS,
with only software configuration changes. The EC/TC and IP resource
are shared by all the domains. As the traffic transforms from one
domain to another domain, no changes are needed on the MGW.
With a maximum capacity of 80K Erl (All-IP), the capacity is enough to
connect serveral domains.
