在中国的大学课堂上，大卫观察到一个很有趣的现象，学生们上课不太喜欢发言，

很少有人提问题，也很少听到和老师不一样的意见，基本上是老师讲什麽，学生记什麽，

看上去他们在课堂上只是被动地接受老师传授的知识。这种单向的教育模式和美国的学校

大相迳庭。在美国的课堂上，学生们喜欢经常和老师交换想法，有时还会毫不客气地指出

老师的错误。但是一个中国学生，即使他发现了老师的错误，他也不敢马上指出来，而是

先反省一下，看看是不是自己想得不对。造成这种现像的原因很多，除了我们师道尊严以

外，还包括中国人传统上的求同心理。大多数中国人不愿在公众场合表现得和别人不一样

，否则他们会招来同伴的非议甚至白眼。就拿上面的例子说，如果那个学生勇敢地指出老

师的错误，他会被周围的同学们认为爱逞能，喜欢出风头。所以中国自古以来有一句话叫

“ 树大招风 ”， 告诫人们不要逞能而受到排挤。

大卫有一个关系不错的中国邻居，是一家国营企业的正式职工，因为单位亏损，好几

个月拿不到工资。他为了生活，留职停薪去做生意。两年下来，辛苦经营，发了财，房子

和车都买了。可是每次他遇到原单位的同事和领导，从来不提自己的成功。偶尔去单位里

办点儿事，也不敢开车去，顶多骑一辆用了好多年的破自行车。大卫问他为什麽这麽做，

他说不愿意太招摇。单位里好些工龄比他长的人都挣得比他少，人家肯定会背後议论他再

说他的行政关系还放在单位里，他可不想因为跟大家的生活水平不一样，给自己日後办事

添麻烦。

不过这个“树大招风”是形容中国人自己的，至于在中国的外国人，只要他们干的事

没有威胁到别人的实际利益，他们再喜欢出锋头也没有关系。
SpeechPattern

很少．．．也很少 not many.., and few, rarely.., seldom as well

很少有人提问题，也很少听到和老师不一样的意见。
Not many students ask questions, and one can rarely hear opinions different from that
of the instructors as well.
1. 这堂课很少有人迟到，也很少有人不认真上课。
Students rarely come late to this class, and only few of them do not take the class
seriously.
2. 在这个小城市很少见到美国人，也很少听到英语。
Americans are rarely seen in the small city. English is seldom heard as well.

即使．．．也 even, even though

即使他发现了老师的错误，他也不敢马上指出来。
Even he noticed the instructor's mistake, he would not dare to point it out immediately.

1. 他即使毕了业，也找不到工作。
He will not find any job even after he graduates.
2. 大卫即使中文说得很好，偶尔也会犯错误。
David makes mistakes once in a while, even thought he speaks Chinese very well.

好几个 quite a few, good many

（他）好几个月拿不到工资。
He didn't get his salary for quite a few months.
1. 我有好几个朋友在这所学校。
I have many good friends in the school.
2. 我好几年没回中国了。
I didn't go back to China for quite a few years.

再说 furthermore, in addition

再说他的行政关系还放在单位里。

Furthermore, his administrative relation is still associated with the work unit.

1. 安娜还不想回美国，再说她还想多学一点儿中文呢。
Anna didn't want to go back to the U.S. In addition, she still wanted to learn more
Chinese.
2. 我不喜欢这个工作，再说还有其他机会呢。
I don't like this job. Furthermore, there are plenty of other opportunities.

至于 as for, as to; go so far as too

至于在中国的外国人．．．他们再喜欢出锋头也没有关系。

As to the foreigners in China, it all right no matter how much they like to be in the
limelight.

1. 如果我好好学习，成绩不至于这麽差。
If I studied diligently, my grade would not be this awful.
2. 至于这个问题，我们可以开会研究。
As for this problem, we can have a meeting to discuss it.
