Title : The Prince and the Pauper

Author : Mark Twain

Characters :
• Edward Ard Tudor – prince of Wales
• Tom Canty – pauper from Offal Court
• King Henry V. – father of Edward
• Miles Hendon – protector of young prince
• John Canty – Tom’s cruel father

Summary :
In 16th century London, two babies were born, Edward, Prince of
Wales, and Tom Canty in the slums of Offal Court. Ten years later,
book-loving Tom wandered to the gates of Westminter Palace where
Prince Edward saw him and brought him to his room to play. They
changed clothes and discovered they looked alike. Edward, in Tom’s
rags, went downstairs to look for his dog and was promptly kicked out
by the guards.
Wandering near Offal Court, Tom’s father’s John Canty found and
flogged Edward, thinking him to be his son. When the boy shouted
that he was the Prince, the slum dwellers laughed and thought Tom
had gone crazy. At the Palace, King Henry V and the courtiers were
shocked by the young prince’s action and protestations that he was
only poor boy Tom, not the royal son or Henry V. The king ordered
that the boy be retaught because, insane or not, he was to rule
England some day.
Young Edward ran away from Offal Court, found a protector in
former troop officer Miles Hendon. They met many adventures; Miles
saved him form the cruelties of John Canty for which the young prince
knighted the officer. Miles thought the boy was demented.
When they learned that the king had died, the prince and Miles
went to Westminter Abbay- after numerous obstacle- to prevent
coronation of another boy. Young Edward proved his claim by locating
the missing Great Seal which he had hidden before he was kicked out
of the palace. Tom, tired of being king, was only too glad to give back
all his borrowed finery to Edward.

Recommendation:
It is a glorious, hilarious, entertaining but impossible story. The
story is realistic, all situations and actions dramatically presented. It
portrays contrasting life in London, particularly the living conditions
suffered by the poor ion England’s capital city.
