b) Briefly describe the main functions of an organisation as identified by Henri Fayol. [10]
c) Identify which functions are associated with business management. [6]

2. a) Distinguish between charismatic, traditional and legal types of authority. [4 each]


b) With the aid of examples, draw appropriate organisation charts for EACH type of authority. [8]

3. a) Identify the traditional principles of organisations. [10]


b) Briefly describe TWO of these principles. [5 each]

4. a) Define:
i method study
ii work measurement [4 each]
b) With the aid of diagrams, explain the procedure for introducing method study and work measurement into
your organisation. [6 each]

5. Small and medium-sized enterprises find it difficult to support research and development of their products.
a) Explain the main disadvantages that a small enterprise faces in this area. [10]
b) Identify and describe how the government might help small and medium-sized enterprises with research and
development. [10]

6. You work for a company which produces MP3 players and the Marketing Department has asked you
to assist them in deciding the most appropriate media for advertising a new generation of MP3 players.
In a memorandum to the Marketing Manager, provide this information, giving reasons for your
choice. [16 + 4 for format]

7. You have been asked by your line manager to draw up a pre-interview checklist for the procedures to be used in
handling applications for a job in your department.
a) Produce a checklist that could be used by your manager to process the applications for this position. [10]
b) Explain the importance of the items you included in the checklist. [10]

8. Your Office Manager has recently introduced the universal use of e-mail throughout the company. In an attempt
to convince staff of the benefits of e-mail, you have been asked to give details of the benefits to both staff and the
company for insertion in the staff handbook. [10 each]
