Dike Design Procedure

Example of Design: Horizontal Tanks Only

Plan view approx. available dike position
A. Minimum containment volume is single largest tank within dike:
ƒ 15,000 gal. this example
ƒ 15,000 gal x .1337 cubic feet/ gallon = 2,006 cubic feet
B. Available Area: 30’ x 45’=1,350 square feet
C. Average dike height = “h”
ƒ “h” = 1,350=2,006
ƒ “h” = 2,006
ƒ “h” = 1.486 ft. = 17.8 inches

vertical

Length is 75 ft. Average Dike Height = 15 inches approximately

A. From code, the minimum containment volume is single largest tank within:
20,000 gallons, this example 20,000 gal x .1337 cu.ft./gal. = 2,674 cu.ft.
B. Available dike area, this example: 30’ x 45’ = 2,250 sq. ft
C. Observer that some volume of the vertical tanks go below the dike wall height.
The area of the second 20,000 gal tank (& any additional verticals) must be deducted from the
total available dike area.
D. Average height of dike = ‘h’
ƒ ‘h’ x area of dike= Minimum containment volume + ‘h’ x circular area of second
and any additional vertical tanks.
ƒ ‘h’ x 2,2250 sq. ft. = 2,674 cu. ft. + ‘h’ x 3.14 x 5.25 x 5.25 (radius squared)
ƒ 2250(h) – 86.5(h)= 2674; 2163.5h = 2674
ƒ ‘h’ = 1.236 ft. = 14.8 inches
ƒ Average Dike Height = 15 inches approximately
