Instead, Imagine a Prosperous San Leandro

For four years, even before the recession began, my
opponents Mayor Santos and Councilmember
Starosciak racked up millions upon millions in deficits,
and have put us on the path to bankruptcy.
Reports showed property and sales taxes, our largest
revenue sources, declining statewide, but Santos and
Starosciak gambled on more revenue. The result -- more
deficit spending.
Just last year, Santos voted for a budget which
assumed the recession was over, but revenue continues
to fall even now and the deficits mount, leaving city
reserves critically low, according to the City Manager
himself. Now, they tell us to vote to raise the sales tax to
10%, the highest in Northern California, or we’ll lose
even more Police, Firefighters, and services.
It doesn’t have to be this way. We must restore our
city to fiscal health, but we need leadership willing and
able to solve our problems. We must enact real change,
streamline administration, control overtime, and ask
city employees to begin contributing to the cost of their
pensions. Pension contributions alone is enough to
completely eliminate this year’s deficit and avoid all
police or firefighter layoffs. We must also begin to
nurture our local businesses and reach out to new ones,
such as grocery stores and restaurants. We can create a
prosperous city and generate revenue for more officers
and vital services.
As Mayor, I will safeguard San Leandro’s safety and
vital services and, because leadership is by example,
I promise to not take a salary until the budget is balanced.
