P hysical Characteristics of the study area

GEOGRAPHICAL SETING

The Joda – Barbil Planning area extends from 20° 05' to 20° 1' North latitude
and from 85° 20' to 85° 25’ East longitude (Map 2.).This whole planning
area consists of two towns Joda and Barbil in the northern part of the Joda
block of Keonjhar District. The planning area comes under the Champua sub-
division and Assembly constituency with Barbil under the Barbil Tahsil and
Barbil police station and Joda under Joda Tahsil and Joda police station.

The Barbil Municipality is situated on the banks of Karo river at a distance of


77 kms from the district head quarter of Keonjhar, is bounded by Jharkhand
in north, Sidamanth reserve forest an Tota river in the south, Thakurani hills
and Kara Khendra Villges in the east, Bimtor, Balagoda, Kalhabadapada,
Balani Villages, in the west. It covers a total area of 38.45 Sqkms,
constituting a total number of 15 wards. Map: ( ).

And the Joda Municipality is situated in the valley between two hills namely
Bada Parbat in the eastand Durga Parbat in the west. These two hills have
an altitude more than 2000 feet above mean sea level and are blanketed
wither forests. Kundra River popularly known as Sona Nala runs through
the Joda town between the two hills. The total area of Joda Municipality is
37.31 Sq Kms, consisting of 14 wards. Map: ( ). The Joda Municipality
area without the reserve forest measure a total of is 26.97Sq kms.

The maximum length from noth to south is around 20.5 Kms, while the
breadth from east to west is about 15.8 Kms. In shape the planning area
resembles a typical linear conurbation.
