Nuclear Fission

The number of protons in the nucleus is called the “atomic number” and is given
the symbol Z. The number of protons plus the number of neutrons is called the
“mass number” and is given the symbol A. Thus, a given nuclide is uniquely
described by the symbol:
¿ A¿
¿
¿ Z ¿ X
¿¿

Where X is the chemical identity (e.g., iron, lead, uranium). With the exception
()
of hydrogen ( 1 H ) and a rare form of helium 2 He , all nuclides have A ≥ 2Z .
