Section 3-1 SOLVING SYSTEMS OF EQUATIONS BY GRAPHING

Definitions

Graphs of Slopes of Lines Name of System of Number of Solution

Equations Equations
Lines intersect Different slopes Consistent and One
independent
Lines coincide Same slope, same intercepts Consistent and dependent Infinite
Lines parallel Same slope, different Inconsistent none
intercepts

System of equations- is two or more equations with the same variables.

Consistent- when a system has at least one solution
Inconsistent- a system with NO solutions
Independent- when a system has exactly one solution
Dependent- when a system has infinite solutions

Example 1
Solve the system of equations by graphing.
2x + y = 5
X–y=1
1st –Write each equation in slope-intercept form. ( y = mx + b)
2nd –Graph each equations
3rd- At the point that they intersect, plug that point into the original equations and solve
4th- determine if the system is CONSISTENT, INCONSISTENT, INDEPENDENT or DEPENDENT
ST1 (Try on your own)
Solve the system of equations by graphing. Classify the system.
3x + 2y = 10
2x + 3y = 10

Example 2
Solve the system of equations by graphing. Classify the system.
9x – 6y = 24
6x – 4y = 16

ST2 (try on your own)

Solve the system of equations by graphing. Classify the system.
3x + 4y = 12
6x + 8y = -16

Applications
MUSIC Travis and his band are planning to record their first CD. The initial start-up cost is $1500 and each CD
will cost $4 to produce. They plan to sell their CDs for $10 each. Hoe many CDs must the band sell before they
make a profit? Set up a system of equations, graph and solve the system. Classify the system.
