1. What makes Wuthering Heights, the house, a “misanthrope’s


heaven” (page 1)?

2. Describe the contrast that the author makes about the contents the house and the owner of the house.
How are they different?

3. What does the story about the girl the narrator liked (page 5) tell us about his character?

4. What can be learned about Joseph from his dialect? (Try saying his parts out loud. Bronte spells
many words phonetically, that is, how they sound if you didn’t know how to spell them.)

5. What is the mood of Mr. Lockwood’s second visit? Find three words that Bronte uses that contribute
to that mood.
6. The young shabbily dressed man in the room is named Hareton Earnshaw. Where else did we see
that last name in this section? What seems strange about this?

7. This scene occurs in 1801. What do you imagine would be the effect in this time period if anyone
threatens to use witchcraft on another person? How does Joseph react to it?

8. On the first page, Lockwood calls himself a “misanthrope.” Do you think he is one? Provide a quote
to back up your opinion.

9. Lockwood makes two attempts to figure out the relationships of the characters and both are wrong.
He is going to be our narrator for part of the book. What then should the reader be wary of when
listening to his story?

10. One of the reasons that these first two chapters are so difficult to get into is that the reader is left
wondering what the backstory is of these strange people and their strange house. What are three
questions that you have at the end of this section?
