Introduction

In Pokemon Diamond/Pearl, you were able to enter your beloved

Pokemon in the contest hall. After an intense game of dress-up,
followed by a dance contest, you could order your chosen one to
perform its attacks in front of a panel of three judges. Win the whole
contest, and you get a bright happy ribbon for future contests! All the
Pokemon fans around the world joined in together with their sentiment:

"What the Flaaffy is up with that???"

C’mon now, we all know that Pokemon are alive for one reason:
combat. Full, hardcore, no-holds-barred combat. If you’re not ordering
someone to Thunderbolt your enemy in the forehead, you’re missing
the point. Pokemon Battle Revolution, like Pokemon Stadium and
Pokemon Colosseum before it, strips away all the distractions and gets
right down to the tactical melee that has made Pokemon, however cute
it may be, a kick-butt role-playing game that belongs in every gamer’s
library.

While Pokemon Battle Revolution is rather self-explanatory, it does

require some knowledge of the mechanics of the system. This guide
will give you far more knowledge than you need regarding type match-
ups, which are the keys to victory in Poketopia (and Pokemon in
general). Read on...

In this Pokemon Battle Revolution strategy guide, you'll find:

STRENGTHS and WEAKNESSES // A massive database of information on each Pokemon's strengths and
weaknesses. Yes, each as in every one of them.
BATTLE PASSES // Tips on setting up your Battle Pass.
COLOSSEUM RULES // A breakdown of the many rules for Free Battle and Colosseum.
POKESHOP // Tricks of the trade—Wii to DS wireless trade, that is.

Pokemon Strengths and Weaknesses
We’ve all seen the type charts: it’s what the Pokemon universe is all about. But what happens when you encounter a
Pokemon you’ve never seen before? Lucky guesses are rarely that, after all.

This section does something that hasn’t been done in any known guide before. We list here every single Pokemon (all 493,
even the unobtainable, just in case they become obtainable in the future, or someone hacked/cheated their way to it), and
rather than just list their types, we’ve listed what moves will be effective, and what moves won’t be.

Our list here is very specific to our cause. That is, we’re only interested in types. Specific moves, stats, evolution lines,
rarity, locations, etc. will not be listed.

What the Types Mean

First, check out the chart...

If you see a green plus, it means the attack listed on the left does more damage than normal to the Pokemon type listed at
the top. For example, an Electric-type attack will do more damage to a Water-type Pokemon. Yellow dashes mean the
attacks do less damage, and red X’s mean the attacks do nothing.

You know this, of course; this is basically Pokemon Fighting 101. But do you know the exact numbers involved in the
types?

Here’s the deal: for every green plus you see, the attack will do double damage. For every yellow dash (that is, an
ineffective attack), the attack will do half damage. Multiplication is used to deal with duel-types.

For example, say my Pikachu uses a Thunderbolt against a Gyarados. Electric-type attacks do double damage against
Water types, and do double damage against Flying types. Gyarados, being a Water/Flying-type, is hit with an attack that
does FOUR TIMES the base damage.

This works the other way too, of course. If my same Pikachu hits a Zapdos (Electric/Flying) instead, the attack winds up
doing exactly the base damage. Electric attacks do half damage against Electric types, and double damage against Flying
types. 0.5 times 2 equals 1; so the attack is neutral.

© 2007 IGN Entertainment, Inc.

If an attack is nullified, shown by the red X in the chart, it doesn’t matter if the Pokemon being hit is a duel type. For
example, Dialga is a Steel/Dragon. If he’s hit with a Poison attack, no damage will be inflicted. Although Dragon types are
neutral to Poison attacks, Steel types nullify them. 1 times 0 is 0; the attack is nullified.

Now, the point of all this is to illustrate something: this section of the Pokemon Battle Revolution guide makes all this math
unnecessary. We have listed every single Pokemon in the game alphabetically, and next to each is a list of what attacks
work well, and which don’t. Let’s take the entry of my favorite Pokemon, Articuno, as an example.

Articuno (Ice/Flying)
Ultra-Effective Rock
Effective Fire, Electric, Steel
Ineffective Grass, Bug
Nullified Ground

...This means that, if you’re fighting against an Articuno, your best bet will be to use Rock-type attacks. Each one will be
Ultra-effective (our own term), doing quadruple damage. If you can’t do a Rock attack, go with Fire, Electric, or Steel
attacks, all of which do double damage. Avoid using Grass or Bug attacks, because they’ll only do half damage. Ground
attacks are worse, being nullified against an Articuno. All attacks not listed (such as Fighting, Psychic, Ghost, Normal, etc.)
are neutral and do base damage.

Trainers in all Pokemon games have the default names for their Pokemon. Even in Pokemon Battle Revolution, you won’t
see Pokemon nicknames when fighting over Nintendo’s Wifi Club. You won’t have enough time fighting humans to look up
every Pokemon on your enemy’s roster (due to a timer), but you can use this information at your leisure if you’re playing
Pokemon Diamond/Pearl, or fighting the computer-controlled trainers of Battle Revolution.

A few more notes: type effectiveness doesn’t matter when dealing with status-altering attacks. For example, the Ghost-type
attack Confuse Ray will still hit Dark types with as much effectiveness as any other Pokemon.

Also, fixed-damage attacks will do normal damage assuming the move isn’t nullified. For example, usually a Ghost-type
attack against a Dark type does only half damage. However, if you use the move Night Shade, it will do normal damage.
This is because Night Shade always hits for your Pokemon’s level (so a level 50 Ghost using Night Shade will hit for 50 HP
damage). Conversely, if your Ghost tries it against a Normal-type Pokemon, the attack is nullified, and won’t go through at
all.

There is the special type of ???. There is only one ???-type attack, that being Curse. Curse, for all intents and purposes, is
a status-altering attack and is neutral to all Pokemon regardless of type.

Also note that this list doesn’t take items or abilities into account. Gastly, for example, always has the Levitate ability, which
nullifies Ground-type attacks. Our chart however still lists Ground attacks as being effective against a Gastly. We can’t
possibly list every combination of items and abilities, so you’ll still need to do a bit of research on your own for some of the
more unusual Pokemon. In general, however, our chart will hold true.

Now, onto the list...

Colosseum Rules

Free Battle Colosseum

Rules Rules

There are around a dozen rules that can customize your Pokemon Battle Revolution experience. A specific set is used for
the Nintendo Wifi Club (WFC), but any of these can be selected in Free Battle. We’ll go over them here to show you all the
possibilities.

Free Battle Rules

Pokemon Level There are three selections here: Level 50 All, Anything Goes, and Set Level.
Level 50 All means all Pokemon involved will be level 50; their stats will be
artificially leveled up or down. Moves will retain, even if the move would have been theoretically impossible.
(That is, if a Pokemon would normally learn a move at level 51, he will still be able to use it under Level 50
All rules.) This is the most even way to battle and it removes the time commitment factor from all players,
so someone who’s played 20 hours will be on the same ground as someone who’s played 200 hours.

The Set Level is the most wacky, and requires some thought to set up. You select the level range of
Pokemon, as well as the maximum level for the party. Setting this to 1-100, 600 would mean no limits. If
you set it to, say, 30-50, 250, then you’ll require Pokemon to be between 30 and 50, but the total can’t
exceed 250 (so you couldn’t see six 50s, for example).

Over WFC, you’ll play with Level 50 All.

Number of entry Pokemon You can set from 1 to 6 Pokemon that will be chosen. Setting this to 6
is basically saying no limit.

Over WFC, you’ll play with 3 for single battles, or 4 for tag battles. There is no way to set up a dual choice
like that in your own rule sets.

Time limit for one battle, Time limit for move selection You can go anywhere from 0 to 99
minutes and 0 to 99 seconds,
respectively. Shot clocks, so to speak, are useful; match clocks aren’t so much, because battles don’t
normally take longer than a few minutes anyway. If a player doesn’t make a selection in the specified
amount of time, he forfeits.

Over WFC, you’ll play with a 60-second shot clock, and no time limit on the overall battle.

Allow Same Pokemon on a Team With this allowed, your team could be comprised of six
Palkias. Without it, you must have six different Pokemon on your
team. Evolution lines are disregarded, so you could have a Stunky and a Skuntank, as long as you don’t
have two of one.

© 2007 IGN Entertainment, Inc.

Allow Pokemon with Identical Hold Items Enabled, Pokemon team members can hold the same
item type. Disabled, every Pokemon has to hold
something unique.

Allow two or more Pokemon to be put to sleep on the same team? If this is allowed, then any
Pokemon on the team can
be put to sleep. If this is disallowed, if a Pokemon is asleep on the team already, any other sleep-causing
moves will fail.

Allow two or more Pokemon to be frozen on the same team? Same deal as the above rule.
Note that if both rules are enabled,
you can still have one Pokemon asleep and one frozen.

If all Pokemon faint due to Explosion or Selfdestruct, user loses? Pretty self-explanatory
here. This was the old rule
where, if you and your opponent were both down to the last member of you team, and someone used
Explosion or Selfdestruct, thus killing both of you, whoever actually did the move would lose. If this is set to
"No," then the match will result in a draw in this instance.

Should Perish Song and Destiny Bond fail if used by a team’s final Pokemon? Similar to the
above rule,
Destiny Bond and Perish Song killed the opponent’s Pokemon if the user was taken down as well. If this is
set to "No" and this situation happens, the result will be a draw. If set to "Yes," the move will simply always
fail when used in this situation.

Fixed-damage moves like Dragon Rage and SonicBoom always fail? If set to no, fixed-
damage moves behave
normally. That means Dragon Rage does 40 HP damage regardless of type, SonicBoom does 20 HP
damage regardless of type if not negated, and Night Shade does HP damage equal to the user’s level
regardless of type if not negated.

This rule is useful to enable if you’re doing a low-level battle and someone has Dragon Rage for some
reason. Otherwise, there’s no real reason to turn it off.

Free Battle Colosseum

Rules Rules

Colosseum Rules

The ten colosseums in Battle Revolution have their own rules that you have to adhere to. You can’t access some of these
rules outside the colosseums themselves, which is a shame, because some of them are kinda cool.

Level 30 Open Almost all colosseums have the rule "Level 30 open." This means that any
Pokemon below 30 will be artificially leveled up to 30. However, any Pokemon over
30 will remain the same. The opponent trainer will use Pokemon equal to the level of your most powerful
Pokemon. That means if you have one level 100 and five level 30s, you’ll be facing nothing but level 100s,
which is bad. This is why you need to keep everyone roughly the same level.

Gateway Colosseum 1 The first time you enter the Gateway Colosseum, you’ll fight a "Rental
Battle." This is a standard match, but you’re forced to borrow a Rental Pass
rather than use your own Custom Passes. If you win, you get to keep the Rental Pass, and can use it in
other colosseums or the Gateway again.

Main Street Colosseum Standard knockout battle. This is exactly how you’ve been fighting since
Pokemon Red/Blue.

Waterfall Colosseum This is a really cool concept called a Team Battle. You’ll select five of your
six, and the opponent will do the same. The order you select them is very
important, because rather than have a 5-on-5 match, you have a series of five 1-on-1 matches. So, your
first pick takes on your opponent’s first pick. Then, your second takes on his second, etc. First trainer to win
three of these matches wins the whole thing.

Neon Colosseum Fortune Battle. This one is exceptionally annoying. All 12 Pokemon (your six
and your opponent’s six) will be on a spinning wheel. You’ll throw darts to select
your actual team: whatever Pokemon your dart hits gets added. That could mean you’ll get yours, or you’ll
get his. With some practice, you’ll be able to time your dart throw and get the Pokemon you want.

Crystal Colosseum This one is a tournament battle, although it’s not really any different than the
standard match. 16 trainers face off in a tournament tree, but because
everything else is standard, you won’t really notice a difference.

Sunny Park Colosseum 1 Standard Matches

Magma Colosseum Similar to the Crystal Colosseum, the Magma Colosseum puts a round-robin
battle into things, but it’s really just a standard match. Simply put, you score
points based on how many Pokemon you have at the end of the match. If you lose, you get zero points
naturally. If you have all three remaining, you’ll score three points. Whoever has the highest score after
everyone has battled everyone else wins, and goes on to face the leader. Otherwise, all matches are
standard.

Sunset Colosseum This one is tough. It’s called a Select Battle, where 12 random Pokemon from
a set list are thrown on the screen. You get to select the Pokemon you want out
of these 12. The 12 are not the same 12 as what you and your opponent have. In fact, your Battle Pass is
basically pointless for this colosseum.

Courtyard Colosseum 1 Standard Matches

Stargazer Colosseum 1 Standard Matches After you beat the Stargazer Colosseum the first
time (thus essentially "beating" Pokemon Battle
Revolution), you can play with either Level 30 Open or Level 50 All in all colosseums. Also, the following
colosseums get new options...

Gateway Colosseum 2 Trade Battle. After any given win, you can trade someone on your Rental
Pass for one of the opponent’s Pokemon. If you win the whole colosseum,
the trade will be permanent for your pass.

Sunny Park Colosseum 2 Little Battle. Under these rules, you must use Custom Passes. The
only Pokemon allowed are those under level 5. Pokemon must have
another evolution, but they must be at their lowest. So for example, Dittos are disallowed because they
don’t evolve. Pikachu will also be disallowed, but a Pichu is allowed, provided it’s under level 5. Also, fixed-
damage moves will always fail, because they would be too cheap in this circumstance.

Courtyard Colosseum 2 Survival Battle. You’ll face trainers constantly with no rest in between.
After a win, you throw a dart a wheel to determine whether you recover
HP, PP, or status problems. You get special prizes for 50 wins or 100 wins, but otherwise it’s all about how
far you can go.

Stargazer Colosseum 2 Standard matches, although the "anti-cheap" rules are on. That means
Explosion and Selfdestruct will result in a loss if they’re used by your last
Pokemon, and Destiny Bond and Perish Song will fail if used by your last Pokemon.

Battle Passes

Warnings About Setting Up

Copying Pokemon Custom Passes

In order to fight in the Colosseum, you have to set up a Battle Pass. The game starts out with two Rental Passes for you to
play with: one containing Generation 1 Pokemon (Bulbasaur, Charmeleon, Wartortle, Dragonair, Rhyhorn, and Pidgeot),
and one containing Generation 4 Pokemon (Grotle, Monferno, Prinplup, Luxio, Gabite, and Staravia). Both are decent
mixes of Pokemon, but what’s the fun in using defaults?

This is where Custom Passes come into play, and what really makes Battle Revolution fun. You can import your own
Pokemon from Diamond or Pearl into Battle Revolution, set up your own team selection from any Pokemon you own (not
just what’s currently in your party at the time of the import), and even select a trainer avatar for yourself.

We’ll take you through the whole process, but first...

Warnings About Copying Pokemon

There are a couple things you need to know before you start copying Pokemon...

This process is a one-way copy. You always copy to Battle Revolution, but you never copy from Battle
Revolution. This really isn’t horrible, because your Pokemon don’t gain levels in Battle Revolution anyway.
In fact, this is more of a safety device than anything else: say you copied when you had a Palkia at level
50. Then, you played Pearl so much on your DS that you got him to level 90. You wouldn’t want to
accidentally copy your level 50 over your level 90 and lose all that work.

After the first copy, you can only copy again using the same DS card. When you initially copy, the
game probably records the trainer name and trainer ID# from your Diamond/Pearl card. After that, you can
use only the same Diamond/Pearl card to copy again. Well, at least for that save file.

Let’s say you accidentally start a new game and use your friend’s Diamond DS card to copy Pokemon. If you delete your
Battle Revolution save, and start a new one, you can then copy from any Diamond/Pearl card.

The only real issue for this would be if you owned both Diamond and Pearl, and you wanted Pokemon from both saves.
The best idea in that case would be to use DSs to trade Pokemon around so you get who you want on a single card, then
copy that card to Battle Revolution. After that, you could trade them all back around.

Deleting your Battle Revolution save does not damage your Pokemon on your DS cards. As
mentioned, doing this could actually help you out if your initial Pokemon copy was accidentally not what
you wanted.

Deleting your DS card save does not damage your Pokemon on Battle Revolution. However, if you
do delete your DS save and start over, you won’t be able to copy your Pokemon over to Battle Revolution
again. But then, who ever deletes their DS save of Pokemon?

Warnings About Setting Up
Copying Pokemon Custom Passes

Setting Up Custom Passes

You are forced to use a Rental Pass for your first colosseum battle. After that, you can start using Custom Passes to your
heart’s content (except in that first colosseum, of course).

From the main menu, select the blue icon in the top-left corner. This is the storage menu. Within here, select the Copy
Pokemon option.

Now you need to fire up your DS. With Diamond or Pearl in the appropriate slot, turn on your DS and get to the title screen.
Meanwhile, hit the Copy Pokemon button (the new one) on Battle Revolution. The Wii will seek out your DS. If everything is
going according to plan, the main menu of Pokemon Diamond/Pearl will have a new "Connect to Wii" option. Select it, and
you’re on your way.

The rest of this is automated, as the DS will automatically copy its Pokemon to Battle Revolution. After it’s done, both
systems will prompt you turn the DS off. Doing so will boot you back to the Battle Revolution storage menu.

From here, back out to the main menu. Select the purple option in the top-middle, which leads to the Battle Pass menu.
From there, select Custom Pass.

© 2007 IGN Entertainment, Inc.

There is a limit to the number of Custom Passes you can create, which is the number of pass designs you have earned
while playing Battle Revolution. Eventually, you can have a dozen Custom Passes, but honestly, just one should be
enough. To create a new pass, select the option at the bottom marked Blank. Then, select your new pass design.

The next step is to create a trainer avatar. The options are rather limited, but you’ll find something you’ll like. We’ll go with
the muscle-bound freak for an example here. Once you select your avatar, you get to name him using the most convoluted
virtual keyboard ever designed for a videogame. (Hey, Battle Revolution isn’t perfect after all.)

Okay, then you’ll be back at the pass selection screen. If you select the twin arrows below the pass, you flip the pass over
and can read the stats that are attached to your save file. These stats hold no matter how many passes you make, so long
as you never delete your Battle Revolution save file.

© 2007 IGN Entertainment, Inc.

Now, that aside, your pass has six empty circles. This, naturally, makes up your team. Select any empty circle, and you’ll
be taken to the storage screen. The storage area perfectly mimics the DS storage area. That means your 18 boxes are all
organized the exact way you had them when you copied your Pokemon over. Select the party, or any of the boxes, and
then select a Pokemon to fill in that spot.

You can only use any given Pokemon once in your passes. That means while I have Genocide, my level 100 Articuno,
committed to my main Battle Pass, he can’t be part of any other Battle Pass I create. However, you can swap Pokemon
around any of your passes anytime you’re not actually fighting in the colosseum, so it’s really not that much of an issue.

For example, as of writing this guide, my Pokemon party is not evenly leveled. If I were to ever fight using Level 50 All rules
(explained in a moment), then it wouldn’t be a problem. However, if I was fighting in the Waterfall Colosseum, which uses
Team Battle rules, we’d have a problem. All the enemy’s Pokemon would be 100, but my guys would retain their own
levels, and thus get trashed.

In that case, I would go into the Battle Pass, and remove Genocide and anyone else who was very far ahead or behind.
Then I’d replace them with other Pokemon that were more evenly leveled with the party, and I’d be good to go. Again, as
long as you’re not actively fighting within a colosseum (and if you are you can’t get to the main menu anyway), you can
change Battle Passes around however you please.

© 2007 IGN Entertainment, Inc.

In fact, for that reason, there really isn’t a reason to have multiple Battle Passes. The only thing I could possibly think of is if
you a pass specifically created for when you fight among friends and have "house rules." I know that, personally, my friends
and I sometimes have a "No Legendary" rule. If your main pass is comprised of six legendaries (say Mewtwo, Heatran,
Palkia, Dialga, Regigigas, and Uxie), then you might want to make a new Battle Pass that features more conventional
Pokemon to save time in the future.

One more note. Aside from the six Pokemon circles of your passes, you can select the picture of your avatar to edit his or
her name, title, and catchphrases. You can use profanity in your catchphrases, but should you ever take your game online
over the Nintendo Wifi Club, note that the game will always stick with the defaults. So really, anything you put here will be
for your own amusement.

Anyway, once you have your Custom Pass(es) set up how you want it, you can select it whenever you’re in the colosseum
prior to the fight. If you should re-copy your DS card, all the Pokemon will update. This means any you traded away will be
lost on Battle Revolution as well, but any that leveled up or any newcomers will then be available. You won’t have to reset
your Custom Passes either, unless your Custom Passes contained Pokemon that you no longer possess.

Pokeshop
The best feature about Pokemon Battle Revolution—apart from the WFC battles of course—is the fact that your Battle
Revolution progress can help your Diamond/Pearl progress as well. Whenever you clear any given colosseum, you’ll get
Poke Coupons, which can then be spent in the shop (accessed via the main menu).

Many of the items available are mundane: simply clothes for you to outfit and customize your avatar trainer on custom
passes. And even then, honestly, you won’t have much variety. Where the shop really shines however is the fact that you
can buy rare Technical Machines to give your Diamond/Pearl Pokemon. These TMs won’t be anything new, but many that
you can buy are usually only found once over the course of a game. For example, you can buy TM 24 (Thunderbolt), which
you normally can only get once in Diamond/Pearl.

We’ll show you here how to buy stuff, although we don’t have DS screenshots. Should be pretty easy to figure out though.
The first thing you need to do is select Shop from the main menu, then choose "Mystery Gift." (Choosing the "Gear" option
sends you to trainer avatar clothes.) Find your preferred present, select it, then hit "Buy."

Now things get sticky. Although the Wii advises that you have leave the DS off while you read the instructions, we
recommend you turn it on if you have it set to Manual Mode. The reason is because, after you hit Next a few times, a 3-
minute countdown will start. If you don’t transfer the gift over to the DS within the 3 minutes, you’ll forfeit the item, and you
won’t be refunded the Poke Coupons.

© 2007 IGN Entertainment, Inc.

The final screen on the Wii gives you step-by-step instructions on how to receive the item. Turn on your DS with
Diamond/Pearl in the DS slot. From the DS main menu, a new option will pop up that says "Mystery Gift." Select that, then
"Receive Gift," then "Get via wireless." If you choose either "Get via" option, the DS will send you back up a step because it
won’t be able to find the signal.

After the transfer is complete, the Wii will not detect it. You’ll have to click the "Cancel Distribution" button on the Wii, or just
let time expire. The DS game will save after the transfer. Then, to collect your item, go to any Pokemart (the buildings with
blue roofs; the department store in Veilstone does not count). Inside will be a guy in a green uniform near the counter. Just
talk to him, and he’ll transfer your item, and possibly a "Wondercard." Then, do what you want with the item, save the
game, and you’re good to go!
