Known sources and dates have been noted. If the source is a British publication, "London" or “England” appears in front of the date. In many instances the size of the dolls is not given. ‘Also, no two people work alike and therefore it is impossible to guarantee that with the same needles of hhook, the same yarn or thread and the same number of stitches, two people will produce garments of exactly the same size. Its strongly recommended that you make a sample swatch which will help you decide what size each finished garment will be, In'many cases this size can be adjusted by changing the weight of the yatn of " ‘American — 2 thread andor the size of the knitting needles or crochet hook to fit your specie neods. ‘There are patterns for children’s clothes included In the three volumes of Knitting & Crocheting for Antique Dolls. These would also be appropriate for @ doll. However, it would be necessary to adjust_each pattern to the size of the doll to be dressed, These patterns are also helpful when researching the “styles” of a specific period, British and American crochet hooks are numbered differently. Since some instructions are from old British publications, a comparison table follows which will help you decide on the proper crochet hook needed, 5 8 4 9 mene] 10 10%11 / 9 10 7 GF Metric Conversion Chart 1 a CROCHETING Abbreviations Used In Crocheting |. — Loop, ch, st. — Chain stitch. 5. — Single crochet, 4d... — Double crochet. hd, e, ~ Half-double crochet. tt. c, — Treble crochet p.— Picot, 4. st.— Slip stitch, Repeat, — This moans to work designated rows, rounds or portions of the work as many times 3s directed. * Stars or asterisks mean, as mentioned wherever they ‘occur, that the details given betwoen them are to be repeated as many times as directed before going on with the details which follow the next FAs an example: * 6 ch., 1 s. 6. in the next space and repeat twice more from * (or last *), means that you are to crochet as follows: 6 ch., 15.6. in the next space, 6 ch., 15. in the next space, 6 ch, 1 sc. in the’ noxt space, thus Fepeating the 6 ch., 1 s. ¢. in the next spaco, twice more after making it the first time, making it three times in all before proceeding with the next part ofthe direction.
