Queen Nzinga—She lived from 1582-1663 and ascended the throne in 1623. By then, Angola was a Portuguese
colony exporting as many slaves and goods as possible with great help from African kings and chiefs. After 40
years of war, Queen Nzinga succeeded in expelling the Portuguese from Angola and some neighboring
kingdoms. She died an old woman, but no successor was strong enough to continue her fight against the slave
trade and European invasions.
