Children’s Energy Education Program recognized at state, national

levels

Bullitt Lick Middle School a participant in the LG&E/KU


Children’s Energy Education Program, has been selected the
Kentucky Middle School of the Year and the National Middle
School of the Year for its outstanding energy education
programs. Students will participate in the National Energy
Education Development Project (NEED) National Recognition
Ceremonies on June 28in Washington D.C.

The BLMS team’s journey began in September of 2009 after


teacher Robin Handloser, the team’s sponsor, attended
training provided by NEED, which is supported in Bullitt
County through the LG&E/KU Children’s Energy Education
Program. As a result of the training she received, a 14-
member student leadership team was developed at the school
to implement energy conservation projects. With the skills
these students developed, they can explain and demonstrate
the science of energy transformations and practices that will
help their school and community learn how to conserve and
preserve our energy supply.

projects conducted by BLMS students through the program:

Practiced presentation skills and energy knowledge to present hands on energy education workshops
for classroom teachers and students.
Conducted a CFL campaign at BLMS resulting in a savings of $500 per year for the next four years.
Collected white paper to be reused and recreated into note packs for employees.

The Children’s Energy Education Program has provided more than 1,000 teachers at 247 schools, including
BLMS, with direct teacher training in energy education and energy efficiency concepts, reaching more than
60,000 students and potential future customers.
