Dear Colleagues,

Tennesseans have spoken loudly. They expect us to govern responsibly holding true to the conservative
principles that resonated throughout this election: fiscal discipline, limited government, and personal
responsibility.

After careful deliberation and thought, I humbly present my candidacy for Speaker of the House of
Representatives for your consideration.

I believe I am well positioned to help navigate through the challenges facing our state and seize the
opportunities that exist as well. I am proud of my record as a leader, legislator and Republican:

● Political: As Republican Party Chairman for 4 years, I worked in all 95 counties with outstanding
Republican leaders to add more numbers to both the state’s House and Senate. I was proud to
be chairman when an extensive, hard-working team took the Senate in 2004. Most recently, I
have served as Statewide Co-Chairman for Governor-Elect Bill Haslam’s campaign.
● Policy: As a long-serving representative, I have played key roles in many Republican initiatives,
including carrying welfare reform in the mid-1990s and introducing and improving Charter
School legislation over the past decade. I have been called upon numerous times to advise
policy groups on strategy and direction.
● Fundraising: My top commitment as Party Chairman was to raise funds to elect Republicans to
office. I was a Bush Pioneer in 2004 and I have developed a statewide network to elicit private
funds

I will not be a part of a Democrat/Republican coalition and I have made no promises to any
individuals. My assurance to the Republican Caucus is that all committee chairmanships will be
Republican and that each committee will have a Republican majority on them. My complete loyalty is
to this Republican Caucus and the principles of the Republican Party.

Tennesseans joined with the majority of Americans on Tuesday in demanding responsible, conservative,
representation and we must deliver. I am confident I can do just that; I humbly ask for your support.
