Task 1

P1 Describe four different types of business

organisations in terms of purpose, ownership,
size and scale
M1 (Part 1) Compare and contrast the
ownership of two selected businesses

Section 1 (pass)

Write a paragraph to briefly explain the

different types of business ownership

• Sole trader
• Partnership
• Ltd
• PLC
• Charity
• Franchise
• Public Sector

Section 2 (pass)

You now need to choose 4 different organisations and write about them in more detail.

1. A local business - a sole trader or a partnership or a Ltd.

It is likely to be a small business. You should find this yourself. It could be a business in
your family or a business local to where you live or the school. You should ask the
owner for the information you need, although they may not want to give you exact
figures for items such as profit or sales (turnover). Approximate or average ones will be
enough.

and any 3 of the following:

2. A PLC e.g. Sainsbury's or Tesco

3. A charity e.g. Oxfam
4. A franchise e.g. KFC, McDonalds
5. Public Sector e.g. National Blood Service (NBS)
You should write a brief description of the business and then write a paragraph on each to
describe:

Part 1

• What the business does and its main purpose

• Does it supply goods or services or both?
• Does it aim to make a profit or is its purpose to provide a public service?
• Does it provide goods/services at below cost so that ordinary people can afford
them?

Part 2

• Who owns the business (don't repeat task 1 here - just mention that you know
what kind of ownership it has)
• The size of the business:
o How many employees does the business have?
o What is its turnover?
o What is its profit?
o How many branches or outlets does the business have?
o Is it classed as a small, medium or large business?

Part 3

• The scale of the business

o Is it a local, regional, national, European or global business?

Section 3 - (merit)

Choose two of the businesses you have written about and write a paragraph to explain
what aspects of the ownership are similar and what aspects are different. You could do
this in a table.

The two businesses you choose should be very different from each other, for example a
national or multinational retail outlet compared to a local privately-owned outlet. This
will help you get a better mark for your work as you will have more to write about.
