LESSON STRUCTURE TIME

Student Information:
The students in Binbirrimba arrive at St John's with low literacy levels (ESL levels2 and 3 in
Reading and Writing and Levels 3 and 4 in Listening and Speaking). The Accelerated Literacy
program used at the school improves their reading levels but more work is required if they are
to achieve outcomes in Writing and in Listening and Speaking. Through the exploration of
other text types it is hoped that the students' levels will improve across all curriculum areas.
Resources include the NT Curriculum Framework, Targeting Texts, copies of a range of texts of
different genre, Smartboard and computer programs.

Achievement Objective(s):
To expose each students to a variety of words used in the text out of context.
Chunking words and finding similarities to other words.
Reiterate the flow and structure of the ditty and how it portrays the characters described.

Learning Outcome(s):
ESL W L3.3 Language structures and features use some cohesive features and attempt
independent writing and vocabulary choice with some errors in SAE structures and spelling.

Preparation/Organisation/Resources: 35min
Spelling List: Lean, Horrible, Crooks, Different, Equally

Introduction:
Review passage and read through to current position. Discuss what has been happening in the
passage, what do we know so far? What is happening in the story? Review the Rhythm and
Rhyme of the ditty and work. Clap and repeat with Class.

Development:
Write the spelling words on the board. Give the students ample time to view these words and
chunk the first word on the board. Discuss the sounds of the word. Brainstorm other words with
similar structure. Once complete erase word and have the students spell the word
independently. Extend to use the word in a sentence (scaffold sentences for lower level
students).
