BACKGROUND ART ‘The growth and increasing popularity ofthe information superhighway has created a need for the transmission of high speed digital data to remote locations such as homes, cies and mobile sites. Data may consist of a variety of diferent types of information including for example. pro- fram files. data files. text. graphics. photographic images. Budio and video clips (as distinguished from radio and TV programming). Standard telephone lines. cellular networks and radio systems deliver data too slowly for many of the current applications. For example. compressed sil video images in 2 digital format requires the delivery of a large amount of data. pically 5-50 kilo bytes. Downloading a typical Internet page with multiple GIF format images. which sxe already compressed, can take several minutes over a stan- dad phone line witha 14400 baud or 28800 baud modem. One existing solution is higher speed telephone Lines. such as. ISDN lines and high speed broadband switched digital service offered by telephone companies. However. these higher speed services are sometimes expensive, often
