Sample Material Reaction with Reaction with KI-

acidified KMNO4 starch solution
KI It changed color—from a -N/A -
purple color to a
yellowish one.

Nail The nail absorbed the No change.

H2 SO4 & KMNO4; it
formed a rust-like
covering on the nail’s
surface.
Steel Wool The color of H2 SO4 & No change.
KMNO4 was lessened but
nothing happened to
the steel wool.
Ethanol It absorbed the color of No change.
H2 SO4 & KMNO4. The
color became colorless.
Hydrogen An oil-like substance The color turned into
Peroxide appeared on the bottom super dark shade of
part of the test tube. blue.

Bleaching Agent There’s no change. The solution turned into

a dark color of blue.

Manganese - N/A - The solution turned into

dark shade of blue but
with a slightly shade of
green color.
The oxidizing agents are the ones being oxidized and the reducing
agents are the ones being reduced during the experiment.

Answers:

[Q1] I observed that the solution became purple.

[Q2] KMNO4 + KI KI + KMNO4

[Q3] The element that is reduced is the H2 SO4 & KMNO4 and the
element that is oxidized is the KI. The reducing agent is the KI
and the oxidizing agent is the H2 SO4 & KMNO4.

[Q4] The color changed into a yellowish one because the purple
solution was reduced or in other words, the KI reduced the H2 SO4
& KMNO4 that’s why a change in color occurred.

[Q5] These are the materials that decolorized the permanganate

solution-- KI, nail and ethanol. They are called reducing agents.
[Q6] The causes of these changes are the actively reducing
agents.

[Q7] The materials that react with the KI-starch solution are the
hydrogen peroxide, the manganese dioxide, and the bleaching
agent. These are called reducing agents.

[Q8] Yes, it is true because KMNO4 and KI-starch are different

solutions. There are some substances that react in KMNO4 that do
not react in KI-starch and vice-versa.

[Q9] No, because some materials do not react in some solutions.

No changes in the solution will appear if mixed. If a substance
does not react in a solution, it is not oxidizing nor reducing agent.
