INTRODUCTION
HBsAg (Surface Antigen) = (+) in infection (ie. Acute or chronic) and carrier state
HBeAg (E antigen) = denote active replication; differentiate infection (+) and carrier state (-)
Anti - HBs(Antibody against surface antigen) = (+) denotes successful vaccination or recovery from infection
Anti- HBc (Antibody against core antigen) = IgM: acute/recent infection; IgG: current infection
Anti- HbeAg (Antibody against E antigen) = (+) if organism is no longer replicating
ACUTE GROUP
PATTERN Anti-HAV IgM Anti-HAV IgG HBsAg Anti-HBc IgM Interpretations
1 + - - - Acute HA
+ + - - Convalescent phase
- + - - Previous infection w/ HA w/ immunity
2 - + - Probable HB carrier or possible acute HB
3 - + + Acute HB
4 - - + Recent acute HB
5 - - - Possible non A non B hep
HB MONTORING GROUP
PATTERN HBsAg HbeAg Anti- HBe Anti-HBc Anti-Hbs Interpretations
1 + + - + - Acute HB (if seroconversion to anti-Hbe does not occur, probable progression to
chronic carrier state) or chronic HB (high infectivity)
2 + - + + - Acute HB (probable recovery) or chronic HB w/ seroconversion (↓infectivity)
3 - - + + + Recovery from HB & immunity
HB IMMUNITY GROUP
PATTERN Anti-HBs Anti-HBc Interpretations
1 + + Previous HB w/ recovery
2 + - Previous HB w/ recovery
3 - + Previous exposure to HB w/ acute or chronic infection
4 - - No previous exposure or immunity to HB
