foreword for our Annuals. Unlike our quarterly ius,
with their strong themes that provide a launch gad for
a few vague musings on the subject at hand, or are
published frequently enough to allow some topical
‘comment, the Annuals feature all the major
‘developments that have occurted in the components
Industry over the past 12 months. So how do youbegin
‘drawing conclusions from 55 disparate articles covering
the latest innovations in Ergonomics and Styling
Engines, Powertrain, Fluid Power and Electronics?
Beyond a few unscientific - if not groundless ~
‘observations about the changing nature of off-hignway.
‘design, based on the increasing or decreasing size of
‘ach section in comparison with previous yeas, there's
not a great deal to say. However, atthe risk of singling
‘out three advertisers above others, I was pleased to see
that Dane, Haldex and ZF have all used the Annual to
promote their hybrid-driveline offerings, enabling those
‘OEMS that are anxious to provide their customers with a
fuel-saving option to do so, without either party aking
a risk on new and relatively unproven technology.

Admittedly, some of these were mote a case of
showcasing the OEM's R&D capabilities and drawing
the crowds at exhibitions, but others ~ like Cat's D
dozer ~are going from strength to strength,
‘Some, perhaps surprising, given the advanced
nature ofthe technology, are pretty much restricted
to China and other Asian markets, where high
utilisation is the order of the day, making the payback
‘much quicker. In the week or so before we went to
press, Hyundai revealed its rew hybrid excavator,
which will initially be restricted to the domestic
‘market before attention turns to the west. Even in
the materials handling industry, the same applies,
with Mitsubishi's Grendia EX hybrid forklift following,
2 similar strategy in Japan,
‘So when will we see these machines routinely
gracing the showrooms of dealers in Europe and the
USA? Perhaps ConExpo, held in Las Vegas, 22-26 March
2011, will provide a clearer idea (p182 provides more
details of that exhibition), And later in the yea,
Beijing's BICES show (p178) could well be the place to
see even more hybrid developments from domestic and
international OEMS alike. An exciting year les ahead!
