Why can’t we hear WSMR 89.1?

According to Sheila Rue, programming

director at WUSF, a large part of the technical
problems WSMR is experiencing have to do
with the station’s antenna.
Rue explained that, generally, radio stations
rent space on radio towers. Using this rented
space, they are able to install and position a
station antenna that transmits the station’s
broadcast to a target area.
The antenna that came with WSMR when
WUSF purchased the station was incapable of
broadcasting to its target audience. Rue said
this had to do with the antenna’s low
placement on the tower, and the direction that
the antenna was facing (away from Tampa).
To resolve this issue WUSF has found a new
tower site, and has purchased both a new
antenna and transmitter. According to Rue,
this new antenna will be placed near the top of
the tower, facing the Tampa Bay area.
