Social Implications of Automobile
Safety

• Everybody loves speed and the most viable source of

speed is cars.
• In India, there are 56.34 million drivers driving 58.86
million motor vehicles.
• 1 person dies every 6 minutes; 10 are injured in the
same time frame.
• 40% of all injuries and deaths occur due to tire skidding
WHAT IS ABS
 Enhancement over existing brake

 Prevents wheel locking

 Maintain steering control

 Shortens braking distance

Understanding Brake Systems
DRUM & DISK BRAKES
COMPONENTS OF ABS

•WHEEL SPEED SENSORS

•ELECTRONIC CONTROL
UNIT

•HYDRAULIC MODULATOR
WHEEL SPEED SENSORS
 Consists of:

 TOOTHED SENSOR RING

 PICKUP COIL

 SIGNAL WIRE
ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT

s IT IS COMPUTER IN
THE CAR
HYDRAULIC MODULATOR

CONSISTS OF:

SOLENOID VALVES

PUMPS
HOW IT WORKS
ECU operates solenoid valve to keep the wheels from locking up
by using a three-step cycle:

PRESSURE MANTAIN

PRESSURE DECREASE

 PRESSURE INCREASE
3 ‘S’ OF ABS

1)STOMP

2)STAY

3)STEER
Anti-Lock Brake Types
• Classified by the number of channels and the number of
speed sensors

 Four-channel, four-sensor ABS

 Three-channel, three-sensor ABS

 One-channel, one-sensor ABS

Disadvantages

 Increased braking distances under some limited circumstances (snow,

gravel, rough surfaces)

 Creation of a "false sense of security"

 The anti-lock brakes are more sensitive on the damper condition.

 costly system
IMPORTANT TIPS
• Points to be kept in mind while driving vehicle with ABS

1. With every ignition ON, ensure ABS warning lamp (on dash
board)coming ON & going OFF.
2. During emergency, press brake pedal with full force & keep it in
fully pressed condition till vehicle stops.
3. Be prepared for the pulsating brake pedal feeling at the foot
(Never lift the foot from brake pedal !!!)
4. Try to steer away from obstacle with brake pedal fully
pressed.
5. If ABS warning lamp come ON while driving, drive carefully at low
speed, towards the nearest service station.
ADDITIONAL DEVELOPMENTS

Modern Electronic Stability Control (ESC)

systems
 Automatic traction control systems(ATC)
