Yoshida Award for Rice Physiology Research for 2010

IRRI has established the Yoshida Award for Rice Physiology Research for Asian rice
scientists in memory of Dr. Shouichi Yoshida. Dr. Yoshida, from Japan, was a principal
scientist and head of the Plant Physiology Department at the International Rice Research
Institute. He died on 23 January 1984 after serving the Institute for 18 years. His primary
research interests were mineral nutrition, rice yield potential, and environmental
influence on the rice crop. He authored the often referred to book titled Fundamentals of
Rice Crop Science and the widely used Laboratory Manual for Physiological Studies of
Rice.

The Shouichi Yoshida Memorial Fund (SYMF) was established in 1984 as a fitting way
to remember Dr. Yoshida, and to perpetuate the scientific excellence and concern for
students that characterized his life. His widow, Yoshiko, and daughters, Ayako and
Tomoko, have supplied the contributions to the fund. The income from this fund will be
used to support the Yoshida Award for Rice Physiology Research, which will consist of
cash and a plaque.

Nominations are now open to any rice research scientist employed by a NARES institute
linked to IRRI or a citizen of a rice-growing country in Asia. Any institute or university
from a NARES or any other scientific organization may nominate qualified scientists
who have made outstanding contributions to rice physiology research—scientific papers
published or another tangible contribution to rice physiology. Special consideration is
given for accomplishments in the areas of Dr. Yoshida’s work: plant nutrition, yield
potential, or interaction between climate and rice.

Nominations should be submitted in English and should include the following:

1. The name of the candidate, complete address, affiliation, and present position.
2. A one- to two-page statement describing the contributions of the nominee. These
should include an in-depth analysis of the contributions and an evaluation of their
impact.
3. Three letters of reference describing the candidate’s achievements and contributions.
The complete address of three referees (telephone, fax, and e-mail) should be
included.
4. A list of the candidate’s 10 best publications.

Nominations for the 2010 award should reach IRRI by 31 July 2010.
