TEST 2 JULY 2009 SEMESTER COURSE : EEB 5223 —- INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION AND CONTROL SYSTEM NAME IDNO INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES This is | HOUR and 15 MINUTES test Answer ALL TWO (2) questions in the Answer Booklet. Ind learly ansivers that are cancelled, if any Where applicable, show clearly steps taken in arriving at the solutions and indicate ALL, assumptions, itany Do not open this Question Booklet until instructed, Note There are NINE (9) pages in this Question Booklet including the cover pag QUESTION 4 The manipulator shown forms part of an industrial assembly process and is used for moving components from point A to point B. Three §/2 way, spring retum solenoid valves, and three linear actuators are employed, The sequence is initiated by a manual PUSH BUTTON switch. The actuator start position is as shown B The system is to be controlled by an OMRON PLC. The working actuator sequence has been established as follows: {C4B+\delay 1.5 5] C-B-Ax| delay 2 s| B+C+| delay 3 s| B-A-C-|}x 5 a. Develop the timing diagram (5 marks) b. Establish the suitable SET/RESET switching functions for both secondary variables and actuators. (5 marks) Develop the ladder diagram. (5 marks) d. There are some modifications that need to be made in ladder diagram part (c), before it works successfully in Automation Studio used in the lab. Draw the modification parts and explain why? (10 marks) QUESTION 2 Figure below shows a conveyor belt system to be controlled by a PLC. Vision ‘system shown in the figure is used to detect any irregularities in the shape of an object. The normal detection processing time is assumed to be 3 s. The following sequence is to be programmed a 8 fe. () 3 Ly L “When the pushbutton, PB, is pressed and released, the conveyor will move immediately and will stop 1.8 s after the proximity sensor, $1, is blocked by the Z abject on the belt. It waits 3 s (delay to allow vision system to complete a process) before the conveyor starts to move again, The belt will continue to move and it will stop at point 1.3 s after the inductive sensor, S2 has been blocked. it waits 0.8 s before the conveyor moves from R to L, and stops at point A.” a. Develop the circuit diagram i (6 marks) b. Develop the timing diagram (5 marks) ¢. Establish the suitable SET/RESET switching functions (5 marks) Develop the ladder diagram.
