Assumptions
1. An existing functioning OS installed on
the Primary Partition
2. Sufficient space on a logical drive
3. Copy of Norton Ghost
Ghost a Partition

Select Destination Drive
Use High Compression to save
space
Proceed to create Image

Restore a Ghosted Image
Select Drive and File

down? Now is when you need it!
Ghosting the Virtual PC
Preparation
• Create a Folder at the C:\ root Directory
• Call it Virtual Share Folder
• Open Virtual PC
• Find A VPC with Win98 and a D:\
• D:\ must have 400MB available – erase
files if necessary
Enable Setting in VPC
• Edit
– Settings
• Share Folder
• A SHARE FOLDER
IS OUTSIDE THE
VIRTUAL MACHINE
AND IS
ACCESSIBLE BY
THE OPERATING
SYSTEM
Create a Share Folder on C:\
Browse
• Share Folder
– Browse
• My Computer
– Local Disk (c:)
Enable
• Browse to Folder
• Designate Drive
Letter
• Check Share every
time

• Put copy in Virtual 2
Share Folder
• Copy is now available
to the operating
system and to the
Virtual PC. Copy GHO file to
Virtual Folder
• The file can be copied
to a CD-R or sent as
an attachment in e-
mail

• Install Software
• Hook up Backpack CD-R using LPT1
• Copy Ghost file from D:\ or Virtual Share
File.

Using a Copy of a .vhd

(Virtual Hard Drive)


Basics
• Virtual PC uses three files for each virtual
machine
– *.vhd = Hard Drive
– *.vmc = Virtual Machine settings
– *.vsv = run file
• A virtual primary partition with an OS is
portable across platforms. *.vhd
Start a New Machine
Three Ways
1. Install an OS from a CD
2. Ghost and existing OS and files
3. Copy an existing Virtual Hard Disk
