Bòlit, Centre for Contemporary Art in
Girona is a new cultural facility whose
aim is to develop research, production
and exhibition programs for
contemporary art projects. Its program
has already been set into motion even
before the building has been finished.
While construction is being pushed
forward and carried out on the
completely new building which will
house the centre, Bòlit has opened its
doors to the public, seeking participation
and involvement of civil society from its
very beginnings. To that end, it managed
to make available a series of
infrastructures to house its expositions
and activities: La Rambla Hall, Capella de
Sant Nicolau, Dadespai and Niu.

El Niu (‘nest’ in Catalan) is an
ephemeral architectural intervention
that we envisioned for Bòlit. It’s located
on the terraced roof above La Rambla
Hall, the former police station and
current world heritage building. Its
objective is to provide the Centre with
temporary infrastructure that is
needed for carrying out activities
aimed at artistic research and
intervention. Under the budget of a
“guest artist”, we took on all aspects of
the intervention: the design, execution,
project management, safety and civil
responsibility. To build it, we recycled
four of the containers that came from
Zaragoza and we reused elements such
as the access stairs provided to us by
Straddle3 who have also helped us
during construction. The containers are
covered with dried leaves, branches
and Czechoslovakian camouflage
fabric to literally resemble a nest, with
a satirical attitude similar to what we
portrayed in “the hedgehog” at the
Espai de Art Contemporani of Castelló.

El Niu (‘nido’ en catalán) es una
intervención arquitectónica efímera que
ideamos para el Bólit. Ubicada sobre la
azotea de la Sala de La Rambla, antiguo
cuartelillo de la guardia civil, y ahora
edificio patrimonial, su objeto es dotar al
Centro de la infraestructura temporal
necesaria para poder llevar a cabo
actividades dirigidas a la investigación y la
intervención artística. Con un presupuesto
de “artista invitado” asumimos toda la
intervención: el diseño, la ejecución, la
dirección de obra, la seguridad y la
responsabilidad civil. Para su construcción
reciclamos cuatro de los contenedores
provenientes de Zaragoza y reutilizamos
elementos cedidos, como la escalera de
acceso, de Straddle3, quienes también nos
ayudaron en la construcción. Los
contenedores están recubiertos de
hojarasca, ramas y tejido de camuflaje
checoslovaco para asemejar literalmente
un nido, con una actitud paródica similar a
la que mantuvimos en el “erizo” del Espai
de Art Contemporani de Castellón.
Lo que diferencia al Niu de los otros
espacios a disposición del Bòlit —y de la
mayoría de los espacios institucionales
relacionados con las prácticas artísticas—
es que funciona no sólo como espacio de
exposición y producción, sino también
como residencia temporal (para artistas
nacionales e internacionales invitados por
el Bólit). La consecuencia inmediata es que
el Niu no está limitado por horarios de uso,
algo inusual en un espacio institucional. En
realidad todo el proyecto es un
experimento que busca plantear
incógnitas en relación con nuestras
principales líneas de acción: la
implantación de nuevas formas de
concebir y usar los espacios sociales, la
gestión con la administración y otros
agentes sociales y culturales, y la auto-
construcción basada en el reciclaje.

La presión mediática impidió que el
espacio del Niu pudiera ser usado como
vivienda, a pesar de que estaba preparado
para ello. Pero la instalación ha
sobrevivido un año sobre la Rambla y está
previsto que permanezca hasta marzo.
Después los contenedores serán
trasladados a Sevilla para comenzar una
tercera vida.

sobre la sala de exposiciones de la Rambla y le
abonarán 31.600 euros por una mierda, que mierda

“Cirugeda, native of Seville, may now brand the
Agbar Tower in Barcelona, a piece of work
designed by French architect and Nobel Prize
candidate Jean Nouvel, a ‘multi-coloured
cucumber’ since he sold the Town Council of Girona
a mere cage to hold monkeys which is greatly
bothersome and costs too much money. Given the
amount the Town Council will have to pay, one can
not consider the architect, inclined to break and
step on the law, to be a monkey per se. Rather the
monkey is those who constructed it, accepted it
and gave the authorisation to place a vulgar
barrack hut above the exposition hall on the
Boulevard and who will him pay 31,600 euros for a
piece of shit. Although camouflaged to our eyes, a

Santi,
Necesitamos que nos digas, lo más
rápido que puedas, las siguientes
preguntas para poder utilizar el
Niu:
- Medidas de seguridad previstas
en el proyecto. En su defecto,
cuáles se tienen que contemplar y
acatar: extintores, señalización de
emergencia, luces de emergencia,
detectores de humo, número de
salidas de emergencia, puerta
antipánico, alguna otra...?
- También necesitaríamos saber si
el tema eléctrico está visado.
- Si finalmente se puede utilizar
el Niu como residencia de
artistas, tenemos que saber si es
imprescindible obtener la cédula
de habitabilidad. Si es así, ¿nos
podrías decir cómo tenemos que
hacer para conseguirla?
Por favor, ya sé que debéis estar
liados con mil historias más, pero
por poco que puedas dedícanos unos
minutitos para poder resolverlo.

questions concerning the use of

- Safety measures anticipated in
the project. If unknown, what
needs to be considered and
complied with: extinguishers,
emergency signs, emergency
lights, smoke detectors, number
of emergency exits, anti-panic
door, anything else...?
- We would also need to know if
the electrical issue is approved.
- If in the end el Niu can be
used as a residence for artists,
we need to know if it’s necessary
to obtain a Certificate of
Occupancy. If it is, could you
please tell us what we need to do
to obtain one?
I know you must be very busy with
a million other issues but if you
could just please take a few
minutes to resolve this for us,
we would appreciate it.

Plantado sobre la balaustrada de un palacete
neoclásico y asomado insolentemente al río Oñar,
la estampa caduca del Niu irrumpe mordaz en el
inmortal Barrio Viejo de Girona. Después de
levantar ampollas entre los convecinos, y merecer
multitud de titulares en los periódicos, la
tempestad poco a poco ha ido amainando y hasta
podría decirse que la ciudad se ha apropiado del
extraño invitado, o al menos convive en paz con él.
En un primer momento, la causa del descontento
fue la ruptura brutal de la imagen de la ciudad
histórica. Llegó a decirse que, aunque fuera desde
un pequeño ángulo, el Niu escondía el monumento
más emblemático de la ciudad: la Catedral. Poco
después la oposición política presentó un informe
que alertaba del incumplimiento de seis puntos de
la regulación urbanística de la zona. Muchas de las
quejas se enunciaron en estos términos: ¿cómo le
consentían a este arquitecto sevillano colocar un
vulgar barracón en pleno centro de Girona?, ¿y
cómo le permitían saltarse unas normas que
habían de cumplir rigurosamente todos los
convecinos hasta para colocar un aire
acondicionado? El Niu sacaba a la luz la rigidez de
la normativa tanto como el clasismo de la
sociedad, el aburguesamiento del espacio público
o la conversión consentida del casco histórico en
postal turística. La condición efímera y ambigua de
la intervención permitía a Cirugeda saltar por
encima de unas reglas de las que precisamente él
no llegó a quejarse: pero la alegalidad no era tanto
un fin como un medio para promover
determinados interrogantes.
Los responsables de Bòlit han celebrado la
polémica suscitada en torno a la libertad artística o
el papel de las instituciones públicas como un
deseado diálogo con la ciudad. A pesar de su
condescendencia, saben bien que la provocación
del Niu no se dirige exclusivamente hacia el Barrio
Viejo, sino también hacia las mismas instituciones
sobre las que consigue anidar. Ostentando su
presencia y camuflándose a la vez, este nido
monumental no deja de remitirnos al humor de las
esculturas colosales de objetos cotidianos de Claes
Oldenburg, al cachorro floral gigante y otras
diabluras del osado Jeff Koons. O en un registro
completamente diferente, los contenedores
precarios que usó Thomas Hirschhorn para
pervertir el concepto de museo-mausoleo en la
Documenta de Kassel. Sólo que esta vez no
hallamos la complacencia de un Pop Art que se
ofrece a entretener al público, ni tampoco la
labilidad de unas obras que el mismo artista suizo
llama improbables. Cirugeda no es artista, es
arquitecto y ejerce como tal: perfectamente
equipado como vivienda, el Niu exhibe un barracón
real y esconde una verdadera residencia; nada en él
lo hace amable o popular, excepto su habitabilidad.
Perched on the balustrade of a petite neoclassical
palace and insolently overlooking the Oñar River,
the deciduous presence of Niu scathingly invades
the timeless Old Quarter of Girona. After having
raised the neighbours’ hackles and becoming
headline news in the newspapers, the storm
gradually died down and you could even say that
the city has appropriated the strange visitor or at
least coexists with it peacefully.
From the start, the cause of discontent arose from
the image of the historical city being brutally
ruptured. People even came to say that, although it
was from a small angle, Niu covered the most
emblematic monument in the city: the Cathedral.
Shortly thereafter, the political opposition
presented a report that warned of the
infringement on six urban regulation points in the
area. Many complaints were expressed in these
terms: how could they let that architect from
Seville place a vulgar barrack hut in the heart of
Girona?, and how could they allow him to disregard
the regulations that all residents have to
rigorously comply with even for installing air
conditioners? Niu shed some light on the strictness
of regulations as well as societal classism,
gentrification of public space and the pompous
transformation of the historical quarter into a
tourist postcard. The ephemeral and ambiguous
condition of the intervention allowed Cirugeda to
bypass some regulations of which he precisely had
no complaints: however the absence of legality or
illegality was not so much an end as it was a
means to raise certain questions.
Those in charge of Bòlit praised the arousing
controversy by revolving it around artistic freedom
and the role of public institutions as creating desired
dialogue with the city. Despite their condescension,
they well know that the provocation of Niu is not
exclusively aimed at the Old Quarter but also at
those same institutions upon which it manages to
nest. Flaunting its presence yet camouflaging itself
at the same time, this monumental nest doesn’t
cease to remind us of the humour found in Claes
Oldenburg’s colossal sculptures of everyday objects,
or the giant floral puppy in front of the Guggenheim
and other mischievous works of the daring Jeff
Koons. Or in a completely different field, the
precarious containers that Thomas Hirschhorn used
to distort the concept of museum-mausoleum at the
Documenta in Kassel. However, this time we don’t
find the complacency of Pop Art that offers itself as
entertainment to the public nor do we find the
instability of some works which the Swiss artist
himself considered improbable. Cirugeda is an
architect and behaves as such: perfectly equipped as
a living space, Niu exhibits a real barrack and
conceals a true residence; nothing about it makes it
friendly or popular except its habitability.
