Depression is a chronic illness which is an emotional, physical and cognitive state that is intense and causes
both physical and psychological symptoms and has more negative effects on a person's day-to-day life.
Understanding the illness is one of the most effective ways of dealing with depression and working toward
recovery. Chronic disease self management describes methods of disease management in which the patient is
in control of their own health by working closely with health professionals and family so that they can
understand their illness and make informed choices regarding treatment options and practise behaviours that
promote their overall health and effectively manage the chronic condition. Self management programs can
also aim to empower patients through providing information, teaching skills and techniques to improve self-
care and doctor–patient interaction, with the ultimate goal of improving patients’ quality of life. Some of the
strategies promoted by the programs will assist the patients with daily living, while other strategies will assist
them to maintain a level of health. This report aims to evaluate the effectiveness of three different self
management programs devised for depressed patients and looking at their impact on patient adherence and
patient health.
