“BLACK HOLE”

Mystery of the space

Black Hole
 Regions of space
from which nothing,
not even light can
escape because
gravity is so strong.
 First postulated in
1783 by John Michel
 Term “black hole”
coined in 1969
 Observational
evidence starting in
1970s
Magical Gravitational Pull
 Gravity is the force of attraction
with which an planet attracts a body
towards it centre
 If you throw a stone in air in comes
back to ground
 Escape velocity is the minimum
amount velocity required to get out
of the gravitational field
Types of Black Holes
 Primordial – can be any size, including
very small (If <1014 kg, they would still
exist)
 Stellar Mass – must be at least 3 solar
masses (~1034 kg)
 Intermediate Mass – a few thousand to a
few tens of thousands of solar masses;
possibly the agglomeration of stellar mass
holes
 Supermassive – millions to billions of solar
masses; located in the centers of galaxies
What is This?

effect of gravity
 (gravitational
potential well)
 near the black hole
on the fabric
 of space-time

 • It is a 2-D
depiction of a 3-D

How Big is A Black Hole,
 Two ways to describe it,
 1. How much mass it has?
It would be ten times the mass of
sun approximately:
(10^31 Kilograms).
 2. How much space it take?
If sun become a Black Hole…contd

 Heavy stars end their life as black

Hole.
 Sun can never become Black Hole ...
 But if it happens then….
 it would get dark and cold around.
If sun becomes a Black Hole

 Its radius will be 3 Kilometer.

 Its gravity will not be stronger

like any other object of the

same mass.
 The Horizon will be small and

Earth will keep on rotating.

 Stability of universe.
Do They Exist

 You cant see a black hole directly

 But can check its existence

 Measure the mass of the region

 If large mass is concentrated in small

volume and it is dark

 it means that there might be a black

hole there
