Dear Sir,
This Company is a supplier of Outdoor Advertising to
National, regional and local advertisers, A major
share of our business is related to tobacco advertising
and as such we have a substantial interest, and so do
our employees, in the proposals submitted for public
c.orrrnent on behalf of the Australian Health Ministers
Conference.

Tobacco Advertising has been regulated by a voluntary

code for many years and the system has worked extremely
well. To our knowledge there have been very few complaints
other than from the anti smoking lobby. When the
voluntary code works so well, why impose another compulsory
regulation?
It has been proven overseas that advertising bans do
not have any measurable effect in curbing smoking. People
choose to smoke for many reasons and research shows that
the effect of advertising is not significant. If advertising
was the reason behind the minority of Australian’s who smoke
why hasn’t it been effective with the majority who appear to
have escaped its ’persuasive influence’.
Advertising restrictions are a further denial of our Marketing
freedoms - the right to compete, the right to inform consumers,
the right to display information.

Yours faithfully, LL *

-.
