Abstract

Bio-syngas conversion is one of the several avenues being targeted for producing
fuels and chemicals from biomass. This present context is a renowed opportunity for
developing novel sustainable syngas conversion technologies. In this context , gas±
expanded liquids (specifically carbon dioxide-expanded liquids) and supercritical
media provide acess to tunable fluid properties (such as enhanced syn gas solubility
and transport rates )that are ideal for performing syngas conversion reactions. We
present two examples of how such properties are exploited to develop new process
concepts. In the first example , a novel homogeneous catalytic process for higher
olefin(c+5) hydroformylation with syngas, characterized by higher turnover numbers
and product selectivity at milder conditions compared to traditional processes, will be
described. The continuous hydroformylation reactor is equipped with a nano-
filteration membrane that substantially retains the dissolved polymer- supported Rh
catalyst complex in the reactor while allowing only the product mixture in the
permeate stream. In the second example, Fischer-Tropsch catalysis in near critical
media, characterized by the sensitive pressure-tuning of the product selectivity with
Fe-based catalysts , will be presented. It is shown how the synergies between the
catalyst, media and reactor engineering can be systematically exploited to develop
novel catalytic process concepts for fuels nad chemicals.
