Have you got

The
X-Factor?

Your Task is this:

You must get your band a record deal!
You will be presenting your band’s musical talent
to Simon Cowell – who has the power to decide
whether you will be HEROES or ZEROES!

1. You will need to use ICT to produce a presentation that Cowell

will be impressed with. Discuss in your group the sort of things
you think he would like – remember he has launched many ca-
reers into the world of pop! Find out about his likes and dislikes by
using the Internet – and come up with a brief of what image you
wish to convey! (1 lesson)

2. You must design a CD cover for your

group’s first single. Use the Internet to
search for, find and save examples of CD
covers. Analyse them and decide upon a
style! You will have one session in which
to do this – what ICT programs will you
use? (1 lesson)
3. What genre of music does your group play? What sort of
people buy this music – are they young, old, male, female,
middle-class, working-class? Do some research into the
demographics of your musical genre using ICT, to get your
marketing right! Report back to your group with your find-
ings – but make sure that you communicate with them
safely and that your rivals don’t find out your plans! How
will ICT help you do this? (1 lesson)

4. Now you’ve done this, you can write

your first set of lyrics to your first single.
This will be a collaborative effort with
your band-mates, but don’t forget to
keep the target audience in mind, and of
course Mr Cowell! What ICT application
will you use now? (1 lesson)
You’ve got the sound, you’ve got the look,
let’s think about making lots of money!
Decide upon a brand, a logo and even a
particular font that best defines the im-
age of your band. Make sure that you are
not doing something too similar to an-
other band—you may get sued! Again,
use ICT to communicate with your fellow
band members in a safe way so that rivals
don’t steal your ideas! (2 lessons)

Now – you’re ready to make your

presentation! Make sure you do all
the above, and when each band
member has produced their presen-

The presentation you made for your group will be assessed by
your teacher—make sure that you save it carefully!
