Reference is made to your mEmorandum "dated JUly 13, 1942, with its enclosure, in the above-entit~ed case.

It is re~e6ted that an investigation be conducted to determine whether or not the subjects have violated the Selective Service Act by counselling evasion, or the Sedition statutes.

It is noted that the Bureau's source of information has reported that the subjects have distributed literature which is described as being generally to the effect that the- negro race has the opportunity of being "delivered" by a Japanese victory

in the wrrent war.· Copies of any such literature should of course be secured and the facts in connection with the printing and dis-

Now the whole world is girding itself for war. At the same time men in fear· arc wondering, Who will win the peace 1 Whose will shall dictate that ·peace~. The totalitarian powers are determined that they will decide it, and they dangle before all humanity their promise of a- "new world order", a "new League of Nations": Examined, that world order is found to be not new, but a return to the old system of oppression dating back to -the first dictator, Nimrod, the founder of Baby-

On "Christmas eve" or 1941 the greatest religious head is heard in a world broadcast, and the .newspaper headlines scream forth: '(Pope Asks New Moral Code to End Anguish"; "Faith (Catholic faith] Will Save 'World, Pope Says"; "Pope Gives FivePoint Program for World Peace" ; and suchlike. with free worship of God according to the Bible and dictates of conscience, That Hierarchy and its head are avowedly in favor of and ceaselessly working for a restoring of the old system of the Middle Ages, which historians rightly call (~the Dark Ages". That system is the old "Holy Roman Empire", in which the Germanic race exercised the dominant power down to its dissolution in 1805. Mindful of the morality of that c"holy" Empire, men- are suspicious of the pope's promise of a "new order based on moral principles". They ask, What morality is there in those Concordats of the pope still held with those totalitarian dictators whose unjust, cruel aggressions against weaker and democratic nations are condemned by all men who believe in the moral standards of present civilization ~

Next a great religious federation offers its- I3-point program, and says :

"We must build now the spiritual foundati.ons of a better order of the world. This task is immediate and cannot be delayed." Easily said, that'

But the sacrifices of this conflict for world domination will not suddenly

Men mutually blame other men 'for the desperate world condition. But one great fact stands out which even the religionists refuse to face and admit. It is this; There aye unseen powers, far more powerful than man, and which are responsible for and back of the present march of all nations to destruction. Those superhuman powers are the demons, of which Satan the Devil is the chief. At that fact worldly men will sneer. Their religious leaders never take.that fact into consideration nor eall it to the attention of their congregations: • Yet the authority for that plain truth

is not any man, but God himself, who sees behind the scenes that which man cannot see. "Yea, let God be true, but

every man a liar." .

Political thinkers say we .must destroy the philosophy of the aggressors which is responsible for this .war. God's Word says rather, THE POWER AND RULE OF THE DEMONS MUST DE DESTROYED. No. human nation or league of nations can do that. It is possible to Him alone who says: "Behold, I make all things new." He can do it. He promises to do it!

Those demon powers operating before the great Flood or Deluge caused the earth to be filled with violence. (Read Genesis 6: 1-13.) Only supernatural power cleaned, up the earth then and preserved a, righteous few to

start off anew thereafter. Those same demon powers are back of the world violence today, because the great Prophet Jesus said that it would be now as it was in the days of Noah. The entire world is now exposed to demonism, Religion, contrary to its claims of being Christian, has betrayed the peoples right into the power of the demons. The demons are opposed to the Kingdom of God, and it is they tha t cause religionists to ignore the power and kingdom of God and to lay emphasis on what worldly men promise to do but cannot. Thereby religion turns mankindaway from God's kingdom, THE THEOCRACY, and into the destruction that awaits the opposers of that Kingdom at the battle of Armageddon.

The chief of the demons, at the very beginning of human history, rebelled. against the Theocratic rule of the universe. He set out to grab universal domination. UNIVERSAL DOMINATION is the great issue now. The demons are back of this war on earth for world domination, in opposition. to the Theocratic kingdom of God by his anointed King, Christ Jesus. Whatever «new order" emerges from this present world war it will not be Theocratic rule of God's will on earth, but human rule, still subject to the malicious demon powers. Humankind will be right where they were before, nay, rather, they will be nearer to the final and universal war of Armageddon, whither... Re:v.elatian....l6.;13,16_plainly .states the demons are irresistibly lead-

ing all nations. Do you believe that Word of God? To reject it is but to fool yourself.

The Theocratic Government of Jehovah by his Christ is the sole hope of righteously-disposed men who desire Lll"E. Everywhere Jehovah's witnesses are proclaiming that THEOCRATIC hope. Fanatical men and women who interfere therewith by mobs, violence, and other unlawful and unconstitutional means not only are un-American, but are un-Christian and yielding themselves to the service of the demons and

• are practicing wicked demonism ! They fight against God and hurt the life interests of the people, which life interests lie only in God's Kingdom. Let such opposers be warned: they shall fail in their foul purpose, and God's Word foretells their destruction with the demons, whom they serve. "The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God." (Psalm 9: 17) On the other hand, "Blessed is the nation. whose God is Jehovah." (Psalm 33; 12, Am. Rev. Ver.) "He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul." (Proverbs 15 ; 32) To refuse God's instruction means your death.

NEW HEAViENS AND EARTH

~Do you pray,! 'Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done in earth as it is done in heaven'? If kincere, then you will not object to nor rebel against this simple statement of God's will or purpose toward mabkind and of how He wills to fulfill that righteous purpose for the benefit Of "men of good-will", Our literal earth, where shortly God's will shall be done as in heaven, abides for ever as the leverlasting habitation of humankind i who obey and serve Jehovah God and Christ His King. (See Ecclesiastes 1: 4; Isaiah 45: 12, 18.) The "earth" which will be de· stroyed as by fire is a symbol of the Visible organization on earth of imperfect men w~o are opposed to THE THEOCRACY. The demon powers, which are spiritual, and hence higher than and invisible to man, are the wicked «heavens", which only God Almighty can remove from over mankind. Such "earth" and "heavens" make up this "present evil world", which wicked world shall be destroyed at .Armageddon. That is the «end.. of the world", but not of our earth.

Looking forward to this time of change, the inspired apostle wrote:

"Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness." (2 Peter 3; 13) That will be the real «new world". God is the Creator and Builder thereof. In this time of world mourning He says to 1D.elL.witlL.faith.. in the. .Bihle., "For behold, I create new heavens and ~ new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind. But BE YE GLAD AND REJOICE FOR EVER in that which I create .... That THEOCRATIC GOVERNMENT is invisible to man, and its power in heaven and earth shall be exercised to the glory of Jehovah God and for the good of all obedient. and faithful creatures that live. Aftci; the final war of Armageddon God creates the "new earth", the new and righteous organization visible to man and which God will set up for the direct governance of the survivors of Armageddon and their righteous offspring. That _ visible organization will be carried on by the "holy men of God" of olden times prior to Christ and who were faithful witnesses and servants of Jehovah even unto death. Those devoted prophets and witnesses God will .. shortly raise out of their long sleep of death and make them "princes in all the earth" under the "new heavens". -See Psalm 45; 16 and Isaiah 32: 1.

The Bible speaks in glowing terms about life in that "new earth" under those "new heavens". You will find descriptions thereof at many places, such as Isaiah 25: 6-9 ; 9: 6, 7; 65: 17· 25; 11: 1-9; Mieah 4: 1-5; Psalm 72; Revelation 21 : 1-5; 22: 1-6. Read them, ' and then, "according to your faith be it unto you," as Jesus said. (Matthew 9: 29) The newly published book Children in simple, heart-cheering phrase presents a glorious picture drawn according to the prophetic Scriptures of the life in the "new earth" hen~tb._';n-a~nsY;.'~lft will be a "world without end", a place of joy, peace and perfect health and life for the obedient. Even the earthly dead which are.ineluded under the ransom sacrifice of Christ Jesus shall be awakened and have the opportunity to learn the truth and gain life in that "n!Jw earth", by faith and obedience. "But all the wicked will he [God) destroy."-Psalm 145: 20.

That is the "new world" which GOD sets before you. Will you turn your back upon it and turn toward the "new world order based on moral principles" as promised by impotent men who.are helplessly sinking down into death 1 You must choose, and by your choice you are fixing your own destiny. If you love righteousness and life, you will choose wisely. You need correet information from the truthful source. To that end this brief message is published pointing to God's Word of truth and to the books which by His providence help you to understand the Bible. By your enlightened choice of the right way YOU may have God's own promise to be "hid in the day of the Lord's anger" at Armageddon and survive to enter into that joyous life in the "new earth» under God's "new heavens".

FIFTH COLUMN

New York Post New York City

;

Atten_tion Mr. Malcolm Logan

Dear Sir:

You have stated to me that the New York.

Post has assigned you to get information concerning Jehovah's witnesses. For the past fifteen years, at the request of the public press, I have repeatedly furnished. information concerning the work of our organization, and that ,without any of. the facts being published. Prequently the press would misrepresent what had been stated, making us appear entirely in "a different light from. what the facts show. For ten years I used on an average 240 radio stations each week, detailing important information to the public. The press ignored that' information. I have been informed by reporters for the ·public press to this effect: "Higher-ups have said to us that nothing shall be published that Rutherford furnishes." During the past twenty years I have written and published books to the number of ninety-nine and which have been published "in seventy-eight different lan-

placed in the hands the people; and yet the

pu blie press asks for ormation. I sometimes

wonder what the pre tries to find, outside of sensational matters. ring the past year I have addressed millions of eople in various assem-

blies throughout E pe and America, all of

which the press has notice of but studiously

ignored. The reason very well stated by the

managing editor of of the largest papers in

Seattle, Washington, 0 this effect: "We know

that this copy furni d is the truth, but if we

, would publish it we uld have to close our

shop. We have so y men back there that

belong to the organ on that hates you that

we could not afford publish it." Whether I

am in Australia, En or America, the same

answer comes from representatives of the

press, showing a well ganized determination to keep the people in ignorance of that whichmenaces the whole world.

In view of these facts you can appreciate why I have hesitated to give answers to your questions. I have nothing to hide, of course, but there

. seems to be no good reafon why I should further waste time and ener~ to furnish information that will not be used for any good purpose, and the public be kept in iinorance of the facts, so far as the public pressris concerned.

This acknowledges your letter of the 12th inst., enclosing a list of questions which you have propounded. I have decided to briefly answer these questions. The Post will not publish what I have

I

I

I

JUDGE RUTHERFORD UNCOVERS FIFTH COLUMN 5 to say, of course, but I make this request: that the answers which I am giving here to the questionspropounded may be put in the morgue of the-Post, and any other public paper that wishes a copy, and when the terrible conditions that now obtain in Europe have come to America, that the managing editor may open the morgue

; and read these answers, and then never be .able to say: "We had no notice that these things were coming." I feel that this is an opportunity to serve notice, once and for all, upon the public press, not for my benefit, but because it appears to be a public necessity and a duty to be performed by anyone who has the facts at hand .

.Aiy answers to your questions necessarily must briefly cover the points. For detailed proof I refer you to the books and booklets which I have written, and which contain an abundance of proof. I have at hand much more proof that has not been published, and which the public

\ press would not publish if it had an opportunity ..

And now referring to YQur questions by number: .

(1) WhYt in your opinion, has there been a sudden recent outburst of violence against J choyah's witnesses in widely separated parts of

the country' ..

The Roman Cath lie Hierarchy, operated from Vatican City, R me, have permeated every part of every nation nder the sun. Their objective is to establish a ain the old "Holy Roman Empire". The Nazis, Fascists and Communists are all for a Corpora State and all determined to destroy republics. he "Hierarch of it " of the Catholic ,8 stem are workin w· these totalitarians to' 1 The Hierarchy claim they are ivinely authorized to rule the earth and that th refore the Hierarchy will act as the "spiritual dvorlord" of the nations of earth, ruled by dictat~rs. If you would read volumes One and Two of by book Vindication there you would find an abundance of evidence to this effect. Again, the book Enemies contains much more information. A Ibook published by an exCatholic priest, E. Boyd Barrett, entitled "Rome Stoops to Conquer", c~ntains also an abundance of information showing that the Hierarchy are really a political organization, bent on destroying everything that represents the interests of the common people. I

The real "fifth column" in America ·is organized and carried on tiy "Ca_!holic ~ction:'. The facts prove this to b~ true\Vitli wliat has recently come to pass in Europe. . nesses have come from those points. In this mob violence public officials; sheriffs, police officers, prosecuting attorneys and others have acted in conjunction with the Catholic priests to launch a vicious attack upon Jehovah's witnesses. Everybody who knows Jehovah's witnesses knows that they are against the totalitarian state. No. one organization has published' as

) much against NasismFasclsm and Communism

as the WATCH TOWER BIBLE & TRACT SOCIETY,. , of which I am the president. The publication of. _ these facts has greatly angered the Hierarchy, ~ and the Hierarchy are determined to crush all of

Jehovah's witnesses. Maliciously the Hierarchy] _" have charged Jehovah's witnesses with being of

. the "fifth column", well knowing that- they are lying, and they are doing it for the very purpose of camouflaging their own wickedness in their attempt to deceive the people, while tl1ey further the "Catholic Action" in 'America. When the time comes, and that seems to. be in the near future, it will be found that there are at least ten million "fifth columnists" in America, and that ninety percent of these are under the' abso-

, lute control of the Roman Catholic Hierarchy.

In 1938 I delivered an address on "Face the Facts" at Royal Albert Han; London, and which was transmi tted by radio to almost all the earth. In numerous states in the United States Catholic priests, together with their radical element under their control, attempted to prevent this address from being delivered by radio or trans- ! mitted to halls. If you will read ·the booklet.

Face the Facts you readily see the reason

why. Shortly there I delivered an address

in New York city, was transmitted by

radio to many other tates in America, and the

Catholic priests a pted to break up those

meetings. On June 1939, I delivered a public

address at Madison Square Garden, and the Catholic Hierarchy, :together with Nazi representatives, attempted to break up that meeting, as well as others throughout the country that were connected by lapd wires. If you will read my lectures "Fascism or Freedom" and "Government and Peace" yon will find an abundance of evidence supporting the foregoing.

The Hierarchy repeatedly have coerced radio stations in America ~o prevent me from speaking to the public. Thelanswer, theref-ore, to your first question, in brief, is this: The outburst of violence against J ehovah's witnesses through-

\

ANSWER: The -American Civil Liberties organization has voluntarily taken up the fight of Jehovah's witnesses, and the Bureau of Department of Justice is now interesting itself concerning the same; theF.B.r. is also duly informed. Action is awaited.

(4) In newspaper stories from Del Rio, Texas, and Kennebunk, Maine, it appeared that an effort was being made to label Jehovah's witnesses as Nazi or Communist sympathizers. ANSWER: In each of the towns named by you i~ the fourth question.jin effort has been made to label Jehovah's witnesses as Nazis or Com-munist sympathizers. This is another scheme

. of '''Catholic Action". In doing this they well know .that they are lying. Not one word' can be found in any of our publications, or amongst the utterances of any of our people, that we have sympathy with Nazis or Communists. On the contrary, there is an abundance of publication from our organization showing that Nazis,

Catholics, Comm . ts and Fascists are working together.

( 5) Do you feel t there is any general plan in the acts against I ehovah's witnesses, since most or these have tarted with an attempt to

force members to ute the flag!

ANSWER: It has al'\'Vays been the scheme of the Devil, as disclosed by history, to begin on the outskirts and brini' his forces against the stronghold of right~rusness~ The Roman Catholic Hierarchy are the chief instrument on earth of the Devil. The eqmpulsory flag saluting by school children was instigated under the direction of the Roman C~tholic Hierarchy, the purpose being to destroy the liberties of the people. It was begun in a ~ubtle way apparently for patriotic reasons, huf the real reason is to break down liberty of conscience and liberty of thought and liberty to worshir. For more than 150 years honest people of America have obeyed the laws represented by the flagt and that without being compelled to salute. I! The Catholic Hierarchy well know the position of real Christians eoncerning the bowing down to images and the saluting of any flag, and, knowing this, the Hierarchy have seized upon compulsory flag saluting · as another means of accomplishing their purpose and discrediting, browbeating and coercing every person who stands for liberty of CODscience, liberty of worship. It is only necessary to refer to the book: Inside Europe, by John Gunther, and the book of E. Boyd Barrett,

1:

JUDGE RUTHERFORD UNCOVERS FIFTH COLUMN 11 Rome Stoops to Conquer, to get an abundance of evidence outside of what Jehovah's witnesses have published, showing that Catholics and Nazis are working together.

I spent much time in Germany from 1922 to 1934. I observed the gradual development of Nazism under Catholic direction there. I have observed the same method carried out in America. "Catholic Action" together with N azis has destroyed all liberty in Europe. It is going to do the same, thing in America!

Let this be distinctly understood, that, when I speak of "Catholic Action", I have no reference to the people who practice the Catholic religion conscientiously. There are millions of such honest and sincere people. It is only the ambitious, devilish representatives in the Hierarchy organization that are determined to rule the earth contrary to the will of God and against the- interests of men.

You probably noticed a United Press dispatch from Berlin, published about the 6th of this month) and which states: "BERLIN, June 6th.- i Special meetings of the Roman Catholic bishops throughout Germany have resulted in a decision to hold thanksgiving masses for the German victory in Belgium and Flanders, it was reported

-\

. today." .

This shows that occasionally a little truth ' leaks out that "Catholic Action" is supporting , Nazis and Fascists, regardless of how much injury may result to the common Catholic people. The population of Belgium is largely Catholic,

It might be inter ing to note that Mussolini

the Legion must t "summary" action. At the

ones connected with the public 'press and who. are acting under the command of the Roman Catholic Hierarchy .

. (6) Do you attribute the troubles to a rise in

the martial spirit in the country ¥ .

ANSWER: Emphatically, No ! These troubles do not rise because of .the martial spirit in America. The military organization of America is not interested in compelling school children or others to .salute the flag. I refer you to the

This, of course, is but a form of idolatry-a sort of 'glorified idolatry', so to speak. When patriotism assumes this form itis nonsensical and makes. the 'patriot' ridiculous."

The Hierarchy have seized upon the decision of the Supreme Court of the United States concerning flag saluting, and which applies .only to little children, as an effort to discredit Jehovah's witnesses. . I stated that the Nazis and Fascists 'were bent upon destroying the British Empire,. and that that would be accomplished. The Nazia have planted their agents throughout the earth. The Roman Catholic Hierarchy have planted their men in every big newspaper office in America, and their men in every department oLthe government of the United States. Their purpose is to seize the government of the United' States, as Holland and other countrieshave been seized. I askyou now to refer tothe booklet Fascism, . or Freedom, page 14, under the subtitle of "America", and read there what Catholic priest O'Brien has to say about grabbing America in 1940, and mark at the same time how these are coming to pass, showing that O'Brien, in a measure, announced the purpose of the Hierarchy.

JUDGE RUTHERFORD UNCOVERS FIFTH COLUMN 17 -

In Kentucky six men are now under arrest, charged with treason, the evidence being that they "advocate a government by one Jehovah God". I cite this as merely one instance. The evidence is too numerous to go into detail. I rcfer you now to the declaration of Jehovah God himself, recorded in Psalm 9: 17: "The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations

that forget God." .

Jehovah's witnesses are not a sect, not a religious organization. They are in the class of. faithful men mentioned in the elevent.h chapter of Hebrews; whose sole purpose is to in- . form the people of God's purpose to establish a. righteous 'government on the earth, and 'in obedience to God's commandment to warn the people of the impending disaster upon the nations. America, with the other nations, is in fori the worst trouble it has ever had, and the ones most reprehensible fer bringing that trouble upon America are those men who compose the Roman Catholic Hierarchy, which men have hypocritically claimed to represent God, but who, in fact, represent the Devil.

The American press will not publish the truth because the press is either owned or controlled by the power and influence of the Hierarchy

and allies. .

Jehovah's witnesses obey every law of the land that is not in conflict with God's law. They are for Almighty God and Christ Jesus. They do no injury to anyone. They have nothing against individuals because of their religion.

UNCOVERS FIFTH COLUMN They simply tell th truth in order that the people might .flnd th . way of escape. They are hated by the Devil a· all the Devil's agencies.

The Hierarchy are the same class as the

ESCAPE: There is but one means of escape from the terrible tr ble that is coming upon the earth in the ve near future, and that is the Kingdom of Jehovah God under Christ J e-

No one in America ior any other nation will escape that terrible 'condition of distress, resulting from Armageddon, except those who seek the Lord God and who devote themselves to Jehovah and to Cfrist J esus His King.

I sound this warning now, and let the press put it in their morgue and take it out when it is desired. God has declared that they shall all know that He is thJ Most High. Honest and sincere Catholics, Protestants, Jews and others who desire righteousness and life will abandon all religious institutions and put themselves nnder the protection of: Almighty God and Christ Jesus. P.S. CONVENTION: . ce dictating the above I have received ames ge from Columbus, Ohio, which shows further vicious Roman "Catholic Action".

Columbus had invi Jehovah's witnesses to

held there, greatly the pleasure of Colum-

signed by the State Fair Association for the use of the Fair Grounds July 24-28. Business men, hotel managers~ and the majority of the citizens, enthusiastically supported the coming of the convention there. From thirty to fifty thousand persons would attend, from every part

HIERARCHY ACTION ~ Bishop Hartley, "Reverend Father" MurphY,ithe Knights of Columbus, and others of Columbus have brought pressure to bear on the Fair management to repudiate the contract for the juse of the Fair Grounds. JUDGE RUTHERFORD UNCOVERS FIFTH COLUMN 29

Bishop Schuler does not understand what intolerance means. He speaks in condemnation of "the ignorant intolerance of Jehovah's witnesses". Outspoken, published criticism of one polit- ~ ical party by another opposing political party, and a free and open condemnation of political policies 'of one party by another, this is not intolerance; not here in America, not here to Amerieans who "can take it" and who have not sworn spiritual allegiance to, a foreign potentate, who is head of ... a religious organization and also ruler of a temporal state, which spiritual allegiance is superior to and more obligatory than any civil or national allegiance.

Intolerance does not mean the exercise of the - American right of free speech; it does not mean honest, sincere criticism which is based upon the Holy Bible and which is against the published beliefs, opinions and doctrines of' other individuals, parties, and organizations, religious or otherwise. Intolerance in fact means the limiting, hindering and suppressing of the rights and liberties of individuals and organizations to freely express themselves differently from and in disagreernent with and in opposition to

Over 2,600,00Q signed a Petition demanding this debate, an~ in November, 1936, the Petition was presented at Washington, D. C. But the Roman Cat~olic Hierarchy of America have never responder. Jehovah's witnesses have never tried to break up meetings of Catholics, as Catholics and .&merican Legionnaires did recently in Texas and California and in other places in America. :,J ehovah's witnesses have never tried to prevent or interfere with meetings of Roman Catholics or other religionists, eIther directly or indirectly or under cover. JUDGE RUTIlERFORD UNCOVERS FIFTH COLUMN 31 something as to what it means to be real Texans and Americans. Let them note this:

The unanimous Declaration of Independence made by the delegates 'of the people of Texas in general convention assembled; March 2, 1836, in its first paragraph condemns the Catholic government from which it broke loose and associates despotism with "the priesthood-both the eternal enemies of civil liberty, the ever-ready minions of power, and the usual instruments of tyrants". In the third paragraph it speaks of "the combined despotism of the sword and the priest-

\

hood". In its twelfth paragraph it says of that

Catholic government: "It denies us the right of worshipping the Allmighty according to the dictates of our own conscience; by the support of a national religion calculated to promote the temporal interest of- its human functionaries rather than the glory of the true and living God." Thus the Texans that signed that Declaration were witnesses of Jehovah, who is that "true and living God". All this helps to make clear who is stirring up the mob violence, against Jehovah's witnesses, numerous cases, of which are regularly reported in the news,' This occasioned a protest by the United States Solicitor General, Francis Biddle, Sunday night, June 16. Speaking over a network of the National Broadcasting System, he pledged the Department of Justice to see to it that the rights of free speech, worship and assembly were protected. The Roman Ca tholie Hierarchy must gnash their teeth with chagrin at his exoneration of Jehovah's people, when the Solicitor General said:

"Jehovah's witnesses have been repeatedly set

upon and beaten. T~ey had committed no crime; but the mob adjudged they had, and meted out mob punishment. T~e Attorney General has ordered an immediate investigation of these outrages. There is no cause for mass hysteria, no justification for mob violence."

Honest, order-loving Americans of good will are grateful for these timely words, and will refuse to lend themselves to any religious incitement to mob violence and anarchy directed against Jehovah's witnesses and in opposition to The THEOCRATIC GOVERNMENT.

GURNEA.

Pursuant to your oral request, there is set torth herewith a brief SllJllm9.ry' of the a.ctivities of Jehovah's Witnesses as are presently existent in the state of Washington .only from the possible angle of seditious interference With the Selective Service. Act and any other apec:U'ic Federal dolation.

A result, of this survey, has refiected, that there bas been no independent agency in the state of Washington which has made any survey ot any kind concerning this religious sect.

Historically, Jehovah's Witnesses began under the leadership of JOSEPH FRANKL:IN RUTHERFORD, now deceased. Who fomerly resid.¢ at 124 Columbia Heights, Broo1clyn, New York. The organizs;tion was initia.1.l.7

\ formed by Reverend CHARlES T. RUSSELL, 1iho YaS the real founder of JehoWh's Witnesses. RUSSELL attacked both the Protestant and Catholic religions, which is the principal. keynote of the Witnesses today. It is reported

that RUSSELL became engaged in litigation and utilized RUTHERFORD's services as an attorney. Upon RUSSEtt's death in 1916, RUTHERFORD took over the leadership of the organization, and in 1931 gave it its present name

of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Briefly speaking, Jehovah's Witnesses are opposed toLalJ. fo~

of religion except their own. All denominational religions. are a ttaoked

\ . as oommercialized, viscious forms of racketeering, and the prinoipal. bone of contention in this division over their activities is their refusal or saluting the nag, a tenet of Judge RUTHERFORD being that to compel people to salute the nag or any other earthly image is a wrong and that for a Christian to salute the flag is in violation of God's specific coIllIJla.nd.

RUTHERFORD, as JOSEPH F. RUTHERFORD, was received at the United States Penitentiary, Atlanta, Georgia., to serve a term of twentY' ,-ears following conviction of conspiracy and violation ot the espionage law. SpecitieaJ..4r. he was charged Wi tb inciting insubordination and obstructing the enlistment service of the United states. He was released from the Penitentiary on Mal'!!h 25, 1919, by a oourt order.

RUTHERFORD and his disciples are also identified With an organization known as the International Bible Students I Association and the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society", particularly in the diasem.ina tion of their various pamphlets, principaJ.ly The Watch Tower and Consolation, both of

SHOEMAKER, on eJCaIDinat1on, stated that according to the belief of the Jehovahls Witnesses and the Watch Tower Bible and Tract SoCietY', to salute the flag of ~e United states is a violation of the Bible precept "Thou shalt not have strange Gods before me", and stated ftimly that to salute the flag of the~ted states is not merely a mark of respect for the nag but is rather &)t"orm of worship; that Jehovah's Witnesses would incur the wrath of Jebovah'-should they recognize ea~ idols or images.

It is interesting to note that from this report, above cited ..

Mr. G. W. HAmLTON, Attorney General for the state of washington, issued

a deciaion to the Board of Directors of the Bay View.. Washington school coridemning them for their expulsion of these ohildren, stating that no

Board of Directors has a right to prevent children of the state from securing an education for the reason that a pupil refuses to salute a flag. There is a statute in the State of Washington requiring the Boa.rd. of Directors of a school to furnish a nag tor each. school and have it displayed, but there is no penalty provision in the statute if a pupil refuses to salute the flag. It is interesting to note tbat the ruling of the Attorney General is the law and mandator,y until the question involved is decided by the Supreme Court ot the state ot Washington, Which, to date, has not been done.

Assistant Attorney General SHIRLEY YARSH as well as Mr. A~ G.

VAN SOLEN, Corporation Counsel for the City of Seattle, WaShington, have advised that there is no statute or city ordinance, to their knowledge, in the State ot washington curbing the activities of Jehovah's Witnesses and, therefore, they are not under any police supervision throughout the sta te of Wash:ington.

July 7, 1942

A review of the file, as mentioned on Page 2, in the Seattle Fie~d Division fails to reflect any specific complaints charging anyot the officials or individuals of Jehovah's Witnesses with specitic seditious statements or actions. They have persistently refused to militarily salute the flag; bowever, they do on mB.lly occasions stand

at attention and remove their hats in the presence of the American flag, but they have consistently and persistently refused to otter the military salute to the cause. The un-specific complainants bave charged this group With a multitude of violations. Some complainants have called

them Communists,; others, pro-Nazi,; but from the tenets ot Judge RUTHERFORD, which will be set forth, it 1s not believed that this organization is willingly engaged in ~ espionage or sedi tious activity. The tact that members of Jehovah's Witnesses re1'use to salute the American nag bas been used by Jehovah's Witnesses illustrativelJr, say:lng that people of the United States would refuse to hail Hitler and salute the swastika and would condemn anyone Who did so, and to their way- of thinking there is no difference in offering the "Hail Hitlern salute to Hi tIer than the mill tar;y salute to the American flag. Both procedures are wrong, accord:ing to their religious belief.

A review ot the Selective Service files in the Seattle Field Division fails to renect that Jehovah's Witnesses have in any way, other than mdividually, interfered with the Seleotive Servioe System. A number· of the Witnesses bave claimed conscientious objection, particularly on

the grounds that they are ministers and therefore entitled to deferment, Class IV-D. This action has not been settled in court in the State of

=8· n. However, it is understood that in the case of one RALPH

ot Eugene, Oregon, a Jehovah's Witness, he claimed that he was a ster and refused to report on order of the draft b:>ard, and . it is reported that instant matter is to be settled in United states District court, PortJ.and, Oregon, before the Honorable Judge FEE. At

that time, the question as to whether all members are ministers regardless ot age and education will be settled, as well 8S the constitutionality

of the city ordinance ot Portland, Oregon, which prevents minor children from distributing 11 terature on the streets of Portland.

Recently" in Spokane, Washington, in United states District Oourt, the Honorable Judge LEWIS SCHWELLENBACH, af'ter trial. by court by" j\U7, sentenced members ot Jehova.h's Witnesses to terms in the Federal Penitentiary tor their refusal to report to the conscientious objectors' camp in the S~te of Oregon. Relative to seditious statements, there is being set 'forth in this memorandum certain writings of Judge JOSEPH RUTHERFORD, deceased, which expostulate and tend to create racial and religious hatred and directly attacks, administratively, this form of government. Re: JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES Sedition

1

It should be noted that RUTHERFORD's statements have no reference to present war-time activities" as he died prior to .the entry of the Uni ted states into the present war.

A nation-Wide survey of this organization was made approximately two years ~~.,_by the Catholic Troth Society under the direction of Dr. EDWARD lOD~URRAN, Brooklyn .. New York, and it is believed that possibly the Bureau may have contacted the catholic Truth Society in Brooklyn and bas in its possesSion information concerning this organization.

The local headquarters of the Jehovah's Witnesses is located at 800 Broadway Avenue, Seattle, Washington, under the title of the International Bible Students' Association. The national headquarters of this, organization 1s located at 124 Columbia Heights, 'Brooklyn, New York.

The national convention of Jehovah's Witnesses was held in Seattle the first ten days in June of 1938. Considerable furor was prevalent at this time, and it is believed that since that date the membership of this organization bas gradually decreased. From confidential sources, it has been learned that there is no way 'of accurately telling how many members are ,in the State of Washington. The Spokane area has about 400 members, 150 of whom are allegedly active. The Spokane area of this organization, which takes in Spokane County and surrounding environs, is divided into three Wl1~.

From a confidential source, it has been ascertained that any person may belong to Jehovahls Witnesses merely by attending services; that business meetings are held during the week evenings and the religious services are held on Sunday evenings at the temples and, in the isolated communities, are held in the individual homes of the Witnesses. This informant has been a member for approximately thirty years. He advises that there are four types of offi'cials of this group; that an individual first spends his time as a IIcompany servant" and is required to devote a few hours a week in the organizational affairs, distributing literature, contacting individuals for converts, etc. A. second unit is known as thel'm.inisters"

who, after spending a. considerable period of time to the study of propaganda and literature of this group, are tnen nor~inedn as ministers of the faith, and are entitled to such respect as is usual~ given a minister of any faith. Another group is knovm as the IIspecial pioneers", who are individuals that work directly out of the national headquarters at Brooklyn, New York, in a' community and l~ the ground work of organizational efforts for the fourth group, lmO'Wll as the "pioneers". The pioneers are individuals who take up

where the special pionee~s leave off, and organize the group further.

At the present time, there is one special pioneer in the state of Washington by the name of HOWARD WARNE, who will be in Spokane, Washington, after he has completed his work at Puyallup, Washington, where they have established a new unit.

Bremerton, Washington" the site of the Puget Sound Navy Yard," ,has 25 members. They meet each Sunday evening at 1616 9th Street and bave five members employed at the Paget Sound Navy Yard. It is interesting to note that these individuals have no compunctions or conscience relative

to working on the manufaoture of war materials or munitions so 10ng as they do not have to use war materials and munitions to shed blood. These individuals have persistently retused to salute the colors inside the Puget Sound Navy Yard but have on every occasion removed their hats and stood at attention while the rest of the workers and employees have given the militar,r salute. It has been reported that this group maintains a

list of all homes they have contacted Where they have been rudely discharged, and where they are not welcome.

The Seattle Police Department bas no information conoerning the Jehovah's Witnesses. The prinoipal headquarters tor the group in Seattle is at 800 Broadway, as above related.

Contaot with numerous confidential ini'olTD.ants" inoluding lawenforcement officers, members of the American Legion, D. A. R., Knights of Columbus, and other civic organizations has. faUed to reflect that

this group is, at the present time, engaged in any seditious or un-American activities. They are, apparently, enjoying their religious freedom and . they have not bothered anyone. Contacts With the IDeal Draft Boards in both Seattle and Spokane, Washington, have failed to reflect that the Jehovah1s Witnesses have in any way interfered With the Selective Service System in the Washington area.

The files of O. N. I. reflect isolated instances where reports have been received, especiaJ.l.y in the .State of Oregon, where this group

bas been observed mapping, sketChing, and photographing naval installations at Tongue Point, near Astoria, Oregon, and at Langlois, Oregon. However,

a perusal of all Wornation concerning this group in the files of the Office of Naval Intelligence, 13th Naval District, failed to reveal any specific, concrete information that this group was aotually engaged in

espionage activities. The bulk of the complaints, as previously statedJ in the Seattle file are made against this group over their failure to salute the American nag.

on AND THE STATE

WHEN there' is a conflict between two authorities, which one must be obeyedt The State inflicts punishment upon a person who fails or refuses to obey its law.

One who has agreedto obey God's law ·and _ then fails Dr refuses to obey is subject to punish~ ment by death.

A person conscientiously believes that. obedience to a certain law of the State is a flagrant violation of God's law. 'Vhat shall that conscientious person do 1

There is a wide distinction between a person who has made a covenant to do God's will and a person who has not made such a covenant .

. Jehovah God requires' of His children full ohedience as a condition precedent to receiving everlasting life. (Proverbs 7: 1, 2) By His 1Vord . He has emphasized that rule from the time of Adam when in Eden until this very day. Adanl failed to obey the commandments of Jehovah God, and the result to him was death. The rules of God never change and are the same toward all.-Malachi 3: 6; 'Acts 10: 34.

Life with the right thereto can be had and maintained only by the grace of God. Life everlasting can be had by those only whoare obedient unto God. The word "father" means the one from whom life emanates. God is the Father, therefore, "of those who gain life· everlasting. He is the fountain of life. (Psalm 36: 9) He gives or administers life everlasting by and through Jesus Christ, His, Executive Officer. "I delight to do t y will, 0 my God; yea, thy law is within m heart." (Psalm 40: 8) Because of his full an complete obedience unto his Father under t e most trying conditions Jesus was given life ~mmortal, the highest place in the universe next to Jehovah, and the administration of Je ovah's will. (Philippians 2: 8-11) Because 0 his complete - obedience Christ Jesus is ma e "the Author of eternal

It is of the greatest] importance to know these facts, if one would li e.

COD AND THE STATE 5

Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye." The general rules announced in these texts apply to all men who shall ever gain life eve rlasting.

- COVENANT PEOPLE

Jehovah God chose the Israelites as a "people for his name". In Egypt he made a covenant with that people and confirmed that covenant at'l\{ount Sinai. The people of that nation, through Moses as their mediator, agreed to do whatsoever God commanded of them, and thus they voluntarily entered into the covenant. (Exodus 19: 5, 8) As, a nation the Israelites broke their covenant and were cast away from God's favor, but there were some individuals who remained faithful un-

to the covenant. Only those who obeyed God's law, as ~ Christ Jesus always does, were preserved unto life.

When the man -Iesus became thirty years '-()f age he presented himself to God and submitted to baptism in the Jordan, thus giving outward testimony that he had entered into a covenant with his Father bysacriflee. (Luke 3: 21~23) Jesus there became the head and chief of the antitypieal spiritual Israelites. His disciples were Israelites by nature, eleven of whom continued faithful, and were taken into the covenant with Christ Jesus for the kingdom of God. Then in due time God' began to take out from amongst the Gentiles, or other nations, a people for his name who would follow in the footsteps of Christ Jesus. (Acts 15: 14) Each one thus taken into the covenant must become a footstep follower of Christ Jesus, suffer reproaches likethose that came upon Jesus, and be faithful even unto death. Such faithful followers of Christ J-esus are spiritual Israelites, chosen of God to be witnesses unto his name and his kingdom. Concerning them it is written: "But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath cal1ed you out of darkness into his marvellous light; which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God j which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy." 43:12. '

That which was writ n in the law and in the prophecies applies speci:ficall to all Christians who follow Christ Jesus. Upon thi .point there is not a possibility of doubt, as it is writt n: "Now all these things happened unto them [nat al Israel] for ensamples ; and they are written for 0 r admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are orne. "Therefore let him that thinketh he standeth ta e heed lest he fall. Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee rom. idolatry." (1 Corinthians 10: 11,12, 14) "For w atsoever things were written aforetime were writte for our learning, that we through patience and c mfort of the scriptures might

have hope."-Romans ,5: 4. .

Such true followers Christ Jesus are accepted by

Jehovah and acknowle ged by him as his children or sons, and these must be rbedient to Jehovah God their Father, if they would receive life everlasting.

As children of God Ithey must be obedient to his commandments; otherwise they could not live. To such

DUTY OF PARENTS .

To all persons who have agreed to do the will of God

he says: "See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil." (Deut, 30: 15) To his covenant people Jehovah says; "One law and one manner shall be for you, and for the stranger that sojourneth with YOu." (Num, 15: 16) 'rye shall have one manner' , of law, as well for the stranger, as for one of your own . country; for I am the Lord your God."-Lev. 24: 22.

The "stranger" amongst the typical Israelites pictured those who are now on -earth and who covenant to do the will of God and who; if faithful, shall form the "great multitude", Those :who "form the "great multitude" Jesus designates as his "other sheep", and when these are gathered unto the Lord and given life all shall be of "one fold" under Christ the great Shepherd. (John 10: 16) God's announced purpose is to grant life everlasting to those only who believe on him and on the Lord Jesus Christ and who render themselves in obedience. This rule applies to both the spiritual Israelites and those of the "great multitude", that is, to all who.shall live: uThe Fath.er loveth the Son,

. and hath given aU things into his hand .. He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life; and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.v=-John 3: 35) 36.

TEACHING CHILDREN

:Marriage and -chjld~bearing are God's arrangement fol' humankind. All parents who have agreed to do the will of God, and who have children, are bound by the commandments of Almighty God to teal.ih their children the ll'ord of God and to instruct. them in the wa.y

of righteousness. T_9 his consecrated or covenant people ) , Jehovah says: "Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life; but teach them thy sons, and thy sons' sons." (Deuteronomy 4: 9) "And these words) which I command thee this day, shall be in thine

,

heart; and thou shalt h them diligently unto thy

children, and shalt of them when thou sittest in

thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, when thou risest up." (Deut. 6: 6,7) "Observe and h ar all these words which I command thee, that it may well with thee, and with thy children after thee fo ever, when thou doest that

which is good and' in the sight of the Lord thy

God."-Deuteronomy : 28.

Addressing himself his people who are in a cove-

nant to do his will, J eh God gives this specific com-

mandment: "Set your earts unto all the words which I testify among you th day, which ye shall command your children to obser to do, all the words of this law."-Deuteronomy 3 : 46.

It cannot properly said that these laws of God

apply only to the anci Israelites. Exactly the con-

trary is expressed in Word. His law is the same

toward all who seek to ' e. Children seek knowledge and must be taught, it is the desire or all sane persons, both adults an children, to receive life ever-

lasting. Obligation is I by the Lord upon conse-

crated parents to see it that their children are instructed in the law Oft I God. They cannot disregard this obligation and exp ct God's favor. It is also the duty of the parents to h ve their children in subjection and to carefully guide hem in the way of righ teousness. Upon this point note these words of the Seri ptures addressed to the consecrated parents and to their children: "Children, ob~y your parents in the Lord: for tliis is right. Honourl thy father and mother, which is the first commandment with promise, that it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth. And, ye fathers, :provoke not your children to wrath; but bring them ~p in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.N-Ephesians 6: IM4.

Parents are the ones responsible for bringing children into the world, a I it is their responsibility to properly instruct those hildren. The custom amongst the people of all nation of leaving the instruction of

children to schools, presided over by persons as teachers' is man's way, but it is not God's way. Parents cannot escape their obligation laid upon them by the Lord by leaving the instruction of their children to others. In matters pertaining to worldly affairs it seems that instruction of children bya competent teacher in the schools is 'proper, but as to the Word of God it is the first and bounden duty of consecrated parents to teach their children. That instruction must be given in the manner God has commanded. The consecrated parents must bring up their children "in the nurture •.. of the Lord" j which means as God has commanded. They must bring them up in the "admonition of the Lord"; which means that advice, counsel and instruction must be given to them in righteousness, as that instruction is set forth in the Word of God, the Bible. This is a sacred duty that no one has any right to interfere with and a duty that the parents have no right to ignore.

Life for the child is involved, and hence it is of great importance to the child that it be taught 'in the -right way, that is, God's way. Otherwise it can never obtain life everlasting. Concerning this it is written in God's Word: "Train up a child in the .way he should go ; and when he is old, he will not depart from it."-Prov. 22: 6.

The foundation of the child's education must be laid in the Word of God, because that is the only way that leads to life everlasting. By nature a child's mind seeks information or knowledge. Only those persons who seek the way to life as the Lord: has pointed out in his Word shall ever find it. This was emphasized by the Lord Jesus. Little children were being brought to Jesus ·by their parents that they might learn of him, and the religious-minded tried to prevent the children from being brought to Jesus: "But when Jesus saw it, he was moved with indignation, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me j forbid them not; for to such belongeth the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever 'shall not receive the kingdom

of God as a little child, he shall in no wise enter- therein. ...:...

10 THE STATE

And he took them in hi .arms, andblessed them, laying his hands upon them." I (Mark 10: 14~16, A.R. V.) By these words the Lord early meant that those persons who seek knowledge f~om him, as the little children were seeking.can find t e way of life; that the kingdom of God is for those and' hose only who seek the knowledge of truth found in od's Word and who then obey by doing what the Lo d commands. It would be impossible to make it mor emphatic concerning the obligation to teach the ehil ren, from their youth up, than what God has-put in hi Word.

COM fANDMENTS

The obligation upon the parents begins to be specially binding only aft r they have made a covenant to do the will of God a d have been taken into a covenant with Jehovah God.iParents who are in a covenant to do the will of God must then inform themselves of his will or commandmtt toward themselves and to~ ward their children, a .d then must obey those commandments and teach e same to their children, and admonish their Childre1 to obey. The state or nation, through its rules of edueation, has no right whatsoever to limit, interfere withL or hinder the instruction by parents of their child rep in the Word of God. By one inquiring how one might obtain eternal life by obeying God)s/commandmen;ts the question was propounded to Jesus: "Which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy hirt, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This the first and great commandment . .And the second' like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thysel . On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.f-e-Matt, 22: 36-40.

To love God means t&at the person must be wholly and unselfishly devoted: to Almighty God, seeking always to know and to do the will of God. This is well defined by the words of J~us addressed to Jehovah God: 'I delight to do thy will, 0 my God; thy law is written ill my heart.' (Psalm 49: 8) "Neighbour," within the meaning of the Scriptu s, is one's fellow creature who

,is also a believer on Jehovah and Christ, arid who has agreed to do the will of God. God's commandment requires that 'one love his. neighbor, even as he loves himself', that is to say, puts his brother Christian on an exact equality with himself. The only way a person can prove his love for God is by fully and sincerely . obeying the commandments of God; as it is written: uIf ye love me, keep my commandments." (J oh-n 14: 15) The Christian proves his love for God by joyfully obeying God's commandments. (1 John 5:- 3) Where the commandments of men are in conflict with God's commandment there is but one thing to do, and that is, to OBEY GOD FIRST.

ONE 'GOD

There is one God Eternal, The Almighty, whose name is Jehovah. (Ps. 83: 18) He is "from- everlasting to everlasting", and from him proceeds everything that is good. (Pa. 90: 2 j Jas. 1: 17) All the ways of God are perfect. (Dent. 32: 4) God's commandments are perfect, and if a man could at all times deport himself exactly in harmony with God's law he would never make a mistake: "The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure; making wise the simple: the statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure) enlightening the eyes: the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether."-Ps. 19: 7-9.

Jehovah God is the.fountain of life and the Giver of life everlasting to them that obey him. (Ps, 36: 9) Necessarily it follows that, if man makes some creature: or thing a god to which he renders obeisance and- obedience, it is written, he could never find or possess life everlasting. By reason of the goodness and loving-kindness of Almighty God this unchangeable commandment is given to all who have hope of li~e everlasting, to wit:

"Thou shalt have no other gods befo~ me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the

earth beneath, or that . thou shalt not bow them; for I the Lord ing the iniquity of the third and fourth Exodus 20: 3-5.

The people who in Palestine at the time God

sent his covenant peo the Israelites, there were

worshipers of gods or j and in order to safe-

guard his covenant from such demon-worship

God commanded them they should have nothing

to do with other gods, they be ensnared by such.

A.gain God emphasized this law or commandment to

his covenant people by ng to them: "Neither shalt

thou 'serve their gods; THAT WILL BE A SNARE UNTO

THEE." (Deuteronomy : 16) His commandment further emphasized his instruction that his covenant people must have nothing ito do with GRAVEN IMAGES or even have a desire for them. "The graven- images of their gods shall ye burn wI ith fire j thou shalt not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, LEST THOU BE SNARED THEREIN: for it is an abomination to the Lord thy GotI."-Deuteronomy 7: 25.

God, being the Fountain of life, and the only source of life, and life being granted upon condition of obedience, it was his great [cving-kindnese that provided for the protection of hislcovenant people by commanding them to refrain completely from giving any worship to any creature orlthing. The Israelites violated the covenant of God and became ensnared, and that nation was destroyed.. (Psalm 106 ~ 36, 40; Ezekiel 21 : 24-27) Thus God emphasized his unchangeable rule that a willful disobedien~e to his commandments means

death to the creature orl nation. - .

C~RISTIAN

A Christian is one who follows in the footsteps of Jesus Christ and joyfully obeys the commandments of Almighty God. All ¢hristians must follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 2: 21) There is a wide difference between [persons who have not made a covenant with the Lor1 and those WHO HAVE COVE-

NANTED to do his will. Those who enter into an agreement or covenant to be obedient to God, and who are accepted by him as followers of Christ Jesus, are entirely separate and distinct from others in the world. At the end of his earthly ministry Jesus uttered these words, addressed to Jehovah God and concerning those who agree to follow in his steps, to wit: "I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I. pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. THEY ARE NOT OF THE WORLD, even as I am not of the world. SANCTIFY THEM THROUGH THY TRUTH; TH¥" WORD IS TRUTH."-John 17: 14-17.

For centuries Satan has been the invisible ruler or "god of this [wicked] world". (2 Cor. 4: 4; 1 John 5: 19; John 14: 30) Only those who have strictly obeyed the Lord's commandments have been saved from th-e influence and power of Satan the Devil: For this reason the faithful followers of Christ Jesus are instructed to 'keep yourselves unspotted from the. world'. (Jas. t : 27) It follows, therefore, that rules that nations make concerning their people in general cannot always apply to the one who is in a covenant to do God's will.

All true and faithful followers of Christ Jesus are and indeed must be witnesses to Jehovah by declaring his name and his kingdom under and by Christ Jesus. (Isa.. 43: 10.12; Ex. 9: 16) All such covenant people must preach the gospel of God's kingdom in obedience to his commandments. (Isa. 61: 1, 2; Matt, 24: 14) All persons thus devoted to God and his kingdom must. TEACH THEIR CHILDREN the. gospel of THE THEoe.RACY or Kingdom. Jesus specifically instructed his followers to continuously pray to God: 'Thy kingdom come; thy will be done, on earth as in heaven.'-1Iatt.· 6: 10.

RELIGION AND CHRISTIANITY .

. Indulging in any ceremony or practice whatsoever contrary to the commandment of God is religious. Religion originated with the demons, of which Satan is the chief. It has at all times been used to ensnare and·

14

has ensnared multitud s of people and kept them blind to God's will or eomm ndment. Religion has been the moving influence for t e persecution and violent treatment of others, and ,articularly the persecution of Christians.

Christians are those who do the will of God as commanded in his Word, They are called "Christians" because Christ Jesus i always obedient to God's will and he is the Head an Leader of all who are diligent to obey God's comma dments. Christians are therefore commanded bJ~ t e Lord to avoid anything and all things that are COl· rary to God's commandments.

UPREME

The Word of Jehova God, as expressed in the Bible, is His law, given to man for his correct guide: "Thy word is a lamp unto ~y feet, and a light unto my path." (Psalm 119: lQ1) The law of God is supreme and is the only instru tion that man can receive and be equipped to walk i, the way of righteousness and life. "Every scripture jinspired of God is also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in ~ighteousnesS; that the man of God may be complete, furnished completely unto every good work."-2 Timothy 3: 16,17, Rev. Ver.

Every Christian is biund by his covenant to be obedient to God's law, as . ritten in the Scriptures. If he voluntarily breaks the .erms of his covenant he is subject to death. (Rom. 1 ~ - 1, 32) All Christians eonseientiously believe that the Word of God, as recorded in the Bible, is the truth; and if they willingly violate their conscientious belief, such act constitutes the breaking of their covenant. To pAUSE A CHRISTIAN TO VIOLATE HIS CONSCIENCE is dena - need by the Scriptures as ((SIN AGAINST CHRIST". (1 'or. 8: 12) These general rules stated in the Bible app y to all persons who believe on God and on Christ an who start to walk in the way of righteousness that 1 ads to life everlasting.

As an illustration: William Penn refused to remove his hat when entering the presence

of others because he conscientiously believed that such would be a violation of God's commandment : and for that he-was punished. Penn had much to do with framing the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and especially with reference to the freedom of the exercise of conscientious worship. The highest court of that Commonwealth, discussing the principles"

of liberty of conscience, said: "Liberty necessarily embraces the right of the individual to exercise his eon-: science and THAT WITHOUT INTERFERENCE. That - in-' " eludes the right to worship the Supreme Being aeeord-' ing to the dictates of his own conscience; to adopt anycreed or hold any opinion whatsoever on the subject

of religion, and TO DO or FORBEAR TO DO l\NY ACT FOR CONSCIENCE' SAKE, the doing or the 'forbearing of which is not prejudicial to the public weal."-Com· monwealth v. Lesher, 17 S. & R. 155.
