Individual Extended Contribution

Speaking & Listening: Explore, Analyse, Imagine

Your Speaking & Listening task will be based on one of the following poems.

• Search for my Tongue by Sujata Bhatt

• Unrelated Incidents by Tom Leonard

• Half-Caste by John Agard

• Love After Love by Derek Walcott

• This Room by Imtiaz Dharker

• Not My Business by Niyi Osundare

• Presents from My Aunts in Pakistan by Moniza Alvi

• Hurricane Hits England by Grace Nichols

Prepare a four minute presentation on how your poem presents ideas of culture. Think
about and research:

• The context of the poem (who it was written by/their culture etc)

• What aspects of culture the poet writes about (e.g. beliefs, traditions, clothes,
language etc)

• How the poet/persona in the poem feels

• How the poet uses language to put his/her ideas across

You will need to make sure that you:

• Give clear evidence from the poem to back up the points you make

• Explain your ideas clearly

• Show that you have understood the points the poet is trying to make

• Are able to answer some questions about the poem

• Have notes, not a whole speech written out. You are allowed cards with your
main points on, but no more than that.
