Site Description Located in Tazewell County, two miles south of


Pekin, off Illinois Route 29. Occupying
approximately 568 acres, with Powerton Lake
covering roughly 1,426 additional acres. Powerton
Lake is managed by the Department of Natural
Resources and is open to the public for recreational
purposes.

Year Start-up Original plant built in 1928.


Units 5 and 6 began operations in 1972 and 1975,
respectively.

Generates at full load enough electricity to meet the


needs of 1.8 million households.

Workforce Approximately 190 employees; 75% union.

Environmental Commitment Station complies with all state and federal EPA
limits for nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide
emissions. Invested $20 million in installation of
equipment to further reduce nitrogen oxide
emissions by 50 percent.

Operations Coal fired boilers produce steam that operates the
turbine generators. Electricity produced by the
generators goes out on transmission lines for
distribution to commercial, retail and industrial
customers.

Fuel Coal received by unit train delivered by the Illinois &


Midland Railroad from interchange points with the
Union Pacific or Burlington Northern/Santa Fe.

Railcars are unloaded using an inline rotary car


dumper.

Ameren CILCO provides natural gas to Powerton


for ignition.
