ISHInoMORI EXHIBITION
A tribute to the “King of Manga”
Known as the “King of Manga”, Shôtarô ISHInoMORI had a major
influence on the Japanese entertainment industry. Japan Expo Sud
goes back over his career.
The festival presents an exhibition of selected works from the endless work
of Shôtarô ISHInoMORI with a number of reproductions.
First, he collaborated to Manga compilations, while taking part in contests
in magazines searching for new talented artists. In 1954, he is spotted by
Osamu TEZUKA and becomes his assistant on Tetsuwan Atom (Astro Boy).
ISHInoMORI explores new ways, from Manga to animation and live series.
Indeed, at TEZUKA’s invitation, he participates in the animation movie
Alakazam the Great. Later he gets interested in live series. His futuristic
innovations (heroes in armor, cyborgs, giant monsters…) are the bases of
Tokusatsu, a genre which is still popular in Japan today and which is
famous in Europe thanks to Choudenshi Bioman, Space Sheriff Gavan or
San Ku Kai.
In France, two of his creations are great firsts. As for animation, Cyborg 009
is showed in cinemas in the 60s: it was the first time for a Japanese
animated cartoon. As for Manga, the very first Japanese comics album to
be released, in 1979, was an episode from Sabu to Ichi Torimono Hikae.
Shôtarô ISHInoMORI created 770 titles in all, which make 128.000 Manga
pages, a Guinness Book record. He died three days after his sixtieth
birthday, on January 28, 1998, leaving a huge patrimony which still lives
today.
