Streptomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat tuberculosis and infections caused by gram-negative bacteria. It works by inhibiting protein synthesis in bacteria. While effective, it can cause serious side effects such as ototoxicity (damage to the inner ear), nephrotoxicity (kidney damage), and neuromuscular blockade. As a result, patients receiving streptomycin require close monitoring of hearing, balance, kidney function, and signs of toxicity.
