Position Paper

Topic: Threats to Security and Peace caused by the trading of Illicit Drugs

Country: The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

Delegates: Andrew Kwik and Charmaine Che

Excellencies,

As one of the permanent members of the UN Security Council, the United Kingdom
recognises its role in furthering peace and stability in the domestic and international stage
with regards to the illicit drug problem. We see it pertinent to criminalize and illegalize
illicit drug-trafficking due to its wider implications for health, crime and the economy.
According to new research for the Home Office, drug abuse amounts to a burden of £18.8bn
a year - or more than £300 per person - in England and Wales. Furthermore, though
Cannabis is produced in most parts of the world, the United Kingdom understands that new
areas such as the central Asian republics of the Commonwealth of Independent States,
where previous production was undetermined, now show a potential to become major
producers. These new trends pose a threat to the peace and security of our domestic as well
as the international community, and thus we strongly urge all nations to join us in enforcing
stricter regulations for the criminalization of illicit drug trading.

Thank you.
