Irving se enamoró del Castillo Rojo de una manera increíble. En
cuanto conoció el gran monumento hizo todo lo que estaba en sus
manos para que no cayera en el olvido, cuidándola y dándola a co-
nocer. Gracias a él a la Alhambra se le ha atribuido la imagen míti-
ca y legendaria de que es un palacio de ensueño desde el que se
puede recrear y evocar el pasado árabe casi en tus propias carnes.
Ni que decir cabe que es probable que de no haber existido Irving
nuestro mayor monumento, y nuestro principal reclamo turístico, no
existiría tampoco, ya que fue él el que intentó por todos sus medios
que la Alhambra fuera lo que es hoy. Cuando se detuvo ante la ciu-
dad amurallada, después de sorprenderse por su majestuosidad, se
sorprendió por su abandono y mal estado. Decidió intentar cambiar
su estado (y lo logró) y por ello, entre otras cosas, Irving, junto con el
príncipe Dolgorouki, fue quien decidió que se pusiera un libro de vi-
sitas en el que los viajeros pudieran dejar sus rúbricas de una forma
más civilizada en vez de ir firmando por las paredes del monumento
al más puro estilo grafitero. Por ello se le ha nombrado como uno de
los primeros sensibilizados con la conservación de lo que hoy es una
maravilla del mundo aunque sin título oficial.
El escritor fue el mayor difusor del monumento haciendo a través de
sus ‘Cuentos de la Alhambra’ que muchos de los viajeros románticos
empezaran a acercarse para poder ver con sus propios ojos estos
rincones tan llamativos que aparecían en ese libro. Además fue el
primer precursor de la visita turística en el Castillo Rojo, ya que al-
gunos de sus libros podían ser utilizados como guía para visitar el
monumento, insinuando así los primeros recorridos e itinerarios de
la época. Supo entender la arquitectura del lugar y su historia y plas-
marla en sus escritos para ser una guía exhaustiva.
Después de conocer la importancia de Irving en nuestra ciudad se
hace patente nuestro interés por dedicar este periódico a su persona
y todo lo que su trayectoria ha logrado en Granada. Por eso hemos
querido analizar el turismo en Granada, saber la influencia que el
escritor ha dejado en el arte de la ciudad, entre otros temas, y por
supuesto homenajear y alabar desde nuestra humilde posición la
gran labor que hizo con nuestra ciudad.

Irving fell in love with the Red Castle of an incredible way. As soon as he
knew the great monument did everything what was in its hands so that
did not fall in the forgetfulness, taking care of it and presenting it. Thanks
to him to the Alhambra the mythical and legendary image has been at-
tributed to him of whom it is a dream palace from which it is possible to
be recreated and to be evoked almost the past Arab in your own body.
Nor that to say fits that it is probable that of to have existed Irving our
greater monument, and our main tourist reclamation, would not exist
either, since he was the one that tried by all means that the Alhambra
was what is today. When one paused before the city walled, after being
surprised by his majesty, it was surprised by his abandonment and evil

interest dedicate to this newspaper to its person and everything what
its trajectory has obtained in Granada. For that reason we have wanted
to analyse the tourism in Granada, to know the influence that the writer
has left in the art of the city, among others subjects, and by all means to
pay tribute to him and to praise from our humble position the great work
that did with our city.

Bentley in London. These stories and
legend that has been translated to in-
finity of languages, were written in the
period in which his author, Washington
Irving was installed in the famous mo-
nument of Granada, the Alhambra. In
them it picked up all the legend on the
Red Castle that took a walk of mouth in
mouth by the streets of Granada, and
in addition investigated in the archives
of the University Library from Grana-
da, thus developing in these stories a
new fantastic novel sort and creating
of them a reading forced nowadays.
After the route that Irving through di-
verse cities realises Andalusia, and
of where the famous tourist route is
born from Washington Irving, this one
lodges in the Alhambra ecstatic by the
beauty and crushed by the abandon-

asta mediados del siglo XV no existió más camino expreso y directo
entre Sevilla y Granada que ése que sintetizaría Federico García
Lorca en sus versos: El río Guadalquivir /va entre naranjos y olivos./
Los dos ríos de Granada/bajan de la nieve al trigo. Siguiendo quizás
los sabios consejos del agua los reyes de Castilla y de Granada abrieron una
ruta paralela que comunicaba las tierras de ambos reinos para intercambios con
beneficio mutuo; la incorporación del reino nazarí a la corona castellana 50 años
más tarde la convertiría en una senda andaluza por la que irían y vendrían, junto
a productos del campo y de artesanías, viajeros de todos los estamentos, desde
el embajador de la Serenísima veneciana, Andrea Navagiero, al arriero que Was-
hington Irving escuchó cantar en la venta de Alcalá de Guadaira.
El trayecto entre Sevilla y Granada está jalonado de ciudades medias que confi-
guran el sistema del hábitat andaluz, singular en España y Europa: prácticamen-
te todas provienen de la antigüedad, todas alcanzaron el rango de medina (así
las llama en el siglo XII Al Idridi en su Descripción de España) en los tiempos
de Al Ándalus, en todas residieron después grandes familias de la nobleza que
dieron empaque a sus caseríos, todas son percibidas como andaluzas y todas al
mismo tiempo se distinguen unas de otras, tanto por edificios como por fiestas y
ceremoniales singulares.
El estrecho margen de un artículo no puede enumerar sus valo-
res; para eso están precisamente las magníficas publicaciones
de El Legado Andalusí pero, indudablemente, fue la proyección
de sus valores lo que impulsó al primer escritor del género na-
rrativo de Estados Unidos, el neoyorkino Irving, a emprender ese
camino.
Había traspasado Despeñaperros en marzo de 1828, casi dos
años después de su llegada a España, buscando, en realidad,
las tierras de las que habían partido los primeros europeos hacia
las costas americanas para quedarse. Le interesaban entonces
los lugares y paisajes colombinos y el propio Cristóbal Colón por-
que, tras traducir una obra sobre el descubridor de otro autor,
había decidido escribir la suya propia.
Vivió durante meses en Sevilla –en el Callejón del Agua, del
barrio de Santa Cruz- investigando manuscritos del Archivo de
Indias; allí seguramente sería donde lo retrató el pintor David Wi-
lkie. Un amigo ruso, el príncipe Dolgorouki, lo convencería para
que lo acompañara a Granada y ése fue el punto en el que cambió su vida.
El viaje pasado a la escritura por la ruta que hoy lleva su nombre es la primera
parte de su libro más famoso, Cuentos de la Alhambra, y termina, como si se
tratara del final de una peregrinación, en el palacio nazarí en el que pudo alojarse
gracias a las influencias de su egregio acompañante.
Se produjo entonces un enamoramiento; Colón quedó olvidado y resplandeció
un mundo mítico, parecido al de la corte de Harum Al Rachid de Las mil y una
noches, pero no lejano sino que, en realidad, comenzaba en su propio cuarto,
como escribía a su hermano Peter unos días después de llegar:
Una ventana da al pequeño jardín de Lindaraja, especie de patio lleno de flores
con una gran fuente en el centro; otra ventana domina el profundo valle del Da-
rro, cuyas aguas murmuran en el fondo del barranco...
Desde allí, sin bajar apenas a la ciudad, fue redescubriendo literariamente el
mundo de la Granada que había existido desde Alhamar de Arjona a Boabdil
hasta desembocar en los reyes Fernando e Isabel, como cuenta en su A Chroni-
cle of the Conquest of Granada.
Volvería a España –tras haber alcanzado sus obras el éxito- con una alta res-
ponsabilidad diplomática pero ya no volvió nunca a escribir para la imprenta. En
realidad, más que escritor, fue un descubridor. Si aquel Colón cuyos papeles
buscaba en el Archivo de Indias había dado un mundo nuevo a los europeos, él
dio otro, el del último esplendor de Al Ándalus, a los americanos y a todos los
habitantes del planeta: sus Leyendas de la Alhambra están traducidas a todas
las lenguas.
Por eso podríamos enmarcar la figura de Washington Irving como la del gran
promotor del Turismo Cultural en la Granada del XIX; su capacidad de imaginar
un mundo ideal, de crear un sueño y transmitirlo a millones de personas es la
base de la que debe partir quien quiera promover una corriente de viajeros hacia
algún enclave tocado por la Historia o por el Arte.
En gran medida la imagen que Andalucía se forjó hace más de siglo y medio y
hasta el primer tercio del XX fue ésa, la de una tierra que era el paraíso de los
sentidos y del sentimiento. De ella debemos partir y, sin abandonar sus coorde-
nadas, imprimirle nuevos valores, nuevas visiones, nuevos sueños.

years after its arrival to Spain, looking for, in fact, the earth of
which had divided the first European for the American coasts to
remain. They interested the Columbian places and landscapes
then and the own Cristóbal Columbus because, after translating
a work on the discoverer of another author, it had decided to wri-

Esta ruta recorre los pasos que
en 1829 siguió el escritor román-
tico y diplomático norteamericano
Washington Irving, fascinado por
la riqueza y el exotismo de la civi-
lización hispano-musulmana. Una
arteria de comunicaciones esta-
blecida muchos siglos antes, que,
en la Baja Edad Media, sirvió de
vía comercial entre el sur penin-
sular cristiano y el reino nazarí de
Granada. Ruta que, como otras,
tuvo un marcado carácter fronte-
rizo. De tregua en tregua, salían
para Granada desde las campi-
ñas sevillanas productos agríco-
las y ganado, que se trocaban
por especias, colorantes, paños y
sedas. En sus etapas, el itinerario
atraviesa tierras cargadas de una
extraordinaria riqueza paisajística
y monumental, parajes, pueblos y
ciudades repletas de evocaciones
históricas, legendarias y litera-
rias. El trayecto une las capitales

páginas que siguen se invita al
paseante a revivir experiencias y
a gozar de un clima, de una na-
turaleza y de unas ciudades ex-
cepcionales, en las que, además
de su patrimonio artístico, palpita
la acogedora hospitalidad y el
abierto carácter de las gentes. La
ruta de Washington Irving se ciñe
básicamente al trayecto, de unos
250 km., de la autovía A-92 entre
Sevilla y Granada por Anteque-
ra. Realiza, además, algunas in-
cursiones a los lados de este eje
central: al principio, por el norte,
se acerca a Carmona, Marchena
y Écija; más adelante se desvía
en dirección a Montefrío e Íllora,
también al norte; por último, visita
Alhama de Granada, unos kiló-
metros al sur de la A-92.
El Paisaje
La ruta de Washington Irving se
desliza a lo largo de dos valles
fluviales, los del Guadalquivir y su
principal afluente, el Genil. Bajo
la atenta vigilancia de una corona
de montañas formada por las es-
tribaciones del macizo Subbético,
su trazado sigue los llanos y pa-
sos que abren los ríos entre Sevi-
lla y Granada. Recorre un paisaje
humanizado en su mayor parte,
un tapiz de campos de cultivo en
el que no faltan, con todo, fasci-
nantes enclaves naturales, como
las lagunas endorreicas –alimen-
tadas por aguas subterráneas–
de las planicies, las manchas de
monte mediterráneo que persis-
ten en cerros y serranías, y las
formaciones geológicas de los ro-
quedales calizos. Sevilla despide
el último tramo de los 650 km. del
«gran río» de Andalucía, el Gua-
dalquivir. La capital se ubica en
el fondo del valle, partida por el
cauce. En sus cercanías, al oes-
te, sobresale el Aljarafe, cubierto
de olivos, viñas y frutales. Al este,
se extienden los olivares cente-
narios de las terrazas fluviales
y de los Alcores, suave meseta
que asciende poco a poco, has-
ta cortarse bruscamente. Alcalá
de Guadaíra, Arahal y Carmona
inician las etapas del viaje, al filo
de los Alcores. Desde su altura
se domina la inmensa vega y la
campiña cerealista surcada por
el Guadaíra y el Corbones. Tierra
de lomas y colinas suaves, una
de las más fértiles de la Penín-
sula, salpicada de grandes pue-
blos blancos distantes entre sí.
En un promontorio del valle del
Corbones destaca Marchena, en
una hondonada cruzada por el
Genil, se arrellana Écija. A partir
de aquí, el trayecto no se aparta-
rá del valle de este otro gran río,
distanciándose o pegándose a
su cauce para remontarlo hasta
sus mismas fuentes, en la Sierra
Nevada de Granada. Por Osuna
y Estepa la ondulada marea de
la campiña baja se encrespa al
romper en las primeras sierras,
aviso del constante aumento de
altitud y relieve a lo largo camino.
Los secanos de labor van dejan-
do paso a una creciente legión de
olivares que coloniza pendientes
y laderas, al tiempo que se ob-
serva una serie inicial de zonas
húmedas, entre Écija y Osuna,
refugio de aves acuáticas. En
adelante, el recorrido contornea
las sierras estepeñas, la del Be-
cerrero, con el singular paraje del
Tajo Montero, y otras con las fau-
ces de cuevas horadadas por el
agua en las paredes calizas, has-
ta llegar a la Roda de andalucía,
en el límite de las provincias de
Sevilla y Málaga. El monte bajo
de especies mediterráneas, como
el acebuche –la variedad silves-
tre del olivo–, coscoja, jaras, ja-
guarzo, palmito e innumerables
plantas aromáticas, tiñe de verde
oscuro los lugares más abruptos,
cerros y montes, trepando hasta
los pedregales. A caballo entre
estos reductos de la vegetación
original y los cultivos se desen-

salvaje, adaptada a los diversos
ambientes: liebres, conejos, eri-
zos, zorros, jinetas, meloncillos,
reptiles como culebras y víboras,

This route crosses the steps that
in 1829 the romantic writer and
North American diplomatic Was-
hington Irving followed, fascina-
ted by the wealth and the exotic of
the Hispanic-Muslim civilisation.
An artery of communications es-
tablished many centuries before,
that, in the Low Middle Age, ser-
ved as commercial route between
the Christian peninsular south and
the Nasrid kingdom of Granada.
Route that, like others, had a noti-
ceable border character. Truce in
truce, they left for Granada from
the Seville countryside’s agricul-
tural and won, that were exchan-
ged by spices, colouring products,
cloth and soothe. In its stages, the

of an extraordinary landscaping
and monumental wealth, pla-

the people. The route of Washing-
ton Irving it is fitted basically to
the passage, of about 250 km, the
autovia a-92 between Seville and
Granada by Antequera. It reali-
ses, in addition, some incursions
to the sides of this central axis:
at the outset, by the north, one
approaches Carmona, Marchena
and Écija; more ahead it is turned
aside in the direction of Montefrío
and Íllora, also to the north; finally,
it visits Alhama of Granada, to ki-
lometres to the south of a-92.
The landscape
The route of Washington Irving
slides throughout two fluvial va-
lleys, those of the Guadalquivir
and their main affluent, the Genil.
Under the kind monitoring of a
mountain crown formed by spurs
of the Subbético bulk, its drawing
up follows level and the steps that
open the rivers between Sevi-
lle and Granada. It crosses a to
a large extent humanised lands-
cape, a carpet of culture fields in
which they do not lack, however,
fascinating natural enclaves, like
the endorheic lagoons - fed by un-
derground waters on plains, the
Mediterranean mount spots that
persist in hills and mountainous
areas, and the formation geologic
of the limestone rocky terrains.
Seville dismisses the last section
of 650 km of the “great river” of
Andalusia, the Guadalquivir. The
capital is located at heart of the
valley, divided by the channel. In
his neighbourhoods, to the west,
it excels the Aljarafe, place set-
ting of olive trees, vines and fruit
trees. To the east, the centennial
olive groves of the fluvial terraces
and the Alcores extend, smooth
plateau that ascends little by little,
until cutting themselves abruptly.
Alcala de Guadaíra, Arahal and
Carmona initiate the stages of the
trip, to the edge of the Alcores.
From his height one controls to
the immense fertile valley and the
cereal-like countryside furrowed
by the Guadaíra and the Cor-
bones. Land of hills and smooth
hills, one of most fertile of the
Peninsula, sprinkled of great dis-
tant white towns to each other. In
a promontory of the valley of the
Corbones it emphasises Marche-
na, in a depression crossed by
the Genil, Écija. From here, the
passage will not separate from
the valley of this other great river,
being distanced or sticking to its
channel to overcome it until its
same sources, in the Sierra Ne-
vada of Granada. Around Osuna
and Estepa the waved tide of the
low countryside is stirred up when
breaking in the first mountain ran-
ges, warning of the constant in-
crease of altitude and relief along

gion of olive groves that colonises
slopes and slopes, while an initial
series of humid zones is obser-
ved, between Écija and Osuna,

El extenso territorio surcado por la
ruta de Washington Irving consti-
tuye una de las zonas de más an-
tiguo y denso poblamiento de la
Península Ibérica, calificable de
auténtico crisol de civilizaciones.
Desde el inicio del viaje hasta su
culminación abundan vestigios
de las culturas del neolítico y los
metales, del mítico reino de Tar-
tesos, de los pueblos ibéricos y
de la notable presencia de Roma,
que legó los espectaculares ya-
cimientos de Itálica, Carmona y
tantos otros. La llegada de los
musulmanes en el 711 inauguró
un nuevo ciclo que conllevó la
inserción de nuevos pobladores
y la expansión y consolidación
de la cultura decididamente ur-
bana de al-Andalus. Mientras en
Sevilla, Archidona, Loja, Alhama
y alrededores de Granada se es-
tablecieron grupos de árabes, en
otros enclaves como Carmona y
otras áreas granadinas se insta-
laron contingentes bereberes que
se fundieron con los hispanos is-
lamizados –muladíes–, cristianos
–mozárabes– y judíos. Hasta el
siglo x, cuando el protagonismo
político y cultural de al-Andalus
gravitaba en torno a Córdoba, Se-
villa, Carmona, Écija, Elvira, apa-

al eje de la ruta que nos ocupa.
Sevilla, corte de los abbaditas,
del rey al-Mutadid y su hijo, el
poeta al-Mutamid, y Granada, ca-
pital de los ziríes, se erigieron en
los polos principales, incorporan-
do a sus reinos otros estados me-
nores, como el de los birzalíes de
Carmona. En los siglos siguien-
tes, los imperios norteafricanos
respaldaron el predominio de Se-
villa y Granada. Los almorávides,
impulsores de un amplio progra-
ma de fortificación de ciudades
y castillos, tuvieron en Granada
uno de sus puntos de apoyo fun-
damentales. Los almohades, a su
vez, continuaron su obra, al tiem-
po que hacían de Sevilla la capital
de su imperio en al-Andalus, en-
grandeciéndola hasta convertirla
en una de las mayores ciudades
de Occidente. En el siglo xiii, sin
embargo, el eje Sevilla-Granada
cambió de carácter. Después de
la batalla de las Navas de Tolosa
el avance cristiano resultó impa-
rable, y tras la caída de Córdoba
y la campiña del Guadalquivir me-
dio, le tocó el turno a Sevilla. En
noviembre de 1248 Fernando III
recibió las llaves de la ciudad de
su último gobernante musulmán.
La rendición arrastró una vasta
zona de influencia, hasta Estepa
y los límites del recién creado rei-
no nazarí con capital en Granada.
En la nueva situación y hasta el
ocaso del estado granadino en
1492, este camino histórico man-
tuvo su vitalidad, en época como
«ruta de la saca», línea comercial
entre cristianos y nazaríes y como
vía estratégica en época de con-
flicto. Mientras las campiñas béti-
cas la surtían de trigo, productos
agrícolas y ganado, Granada ex-
pedía especias, artículos de lujo,
telas, paños, seda sobre todo… A
los usos cotidianos de esta tierra
fronteriza se superpusieron, por
su parte, los incontables hechos
de armas que terminaron con la
conquista de Granada, incursio-
nes, correrías, batallas, el asedio
y toma de Antequera, el cerco de
Archidona, el asalto de Alhama y
la rendición de Loja, las capitula-
ciones de Santa Fe, inagotable
fuente de inspiración de roman-
ces y leyendas y, más tarde, de
artistas y escritores románticos.
Precisamente, junto al pasado
andalusí, esta ruta pone en es-
cena una segunda historia, la del
«descubrimiento» romántico, y
turístico, de Andalucía. A tono con
la nueva sensibilidad del roman-
ticismo, y después de la proyec-
ción de la Península en el contex-
to europeo que acarreó la Guerra
de Independencia, España, y An-
dalucía en particular, empezaron
a recibir una creciente atención
como destino viajero. A las rá-
pidas visitas de Chateaubriand
y Lord Byron, que recrearon el
escenario andaluz en sus obras,
siguieron los viajes y estancias
del propio Washington Irving, de
Richard Ford, Borrow, Delacroix,
David Roberts, Mérimée, Gautier,
Dumas y lo más granado de toda
una generación romántica que
difundió de manera definitiva los
encantos del sur hispano. Bajo
este impulso pionero, Andalucía
se consolidó ya desde media-
dos del siglo xix como una meta
obligada del viajero, un objetivo
privilegiado por su escenario na-
tural, por sus costumbres, por
su patrimonio artístico, por la
evocadora huella de al-Andalus.

Fiestas, artesanía
Las manifestaciones festivas y
las actividades artesanas de las
etapas de la ruta de Washington
Irving muestran algunas de las
más genuinas facetas de la An-
dalucía tradicional, que tanto fas-
cinara, por su autenticidad y pin-
toresquismo, a los románticos. El
ciclo festivo de estas tierras sevi-
llanas, malagueñas y granadinas,
arranca de las tempranas cele-
braciones de enero y febrero, con
los festejos de la Candelaria y el
Carnaval. El tránsito a la primave-
ra está marcado por la suntuosi-
dad de los desfiles procesionales
de la Semana Santa, que ofrece
Castillo de Íllora, vista nocturna.

incontables variantes locales, a
cual más vistosa, desde Sevilla a
Écija, desde Antequera y Archido-
na a Granada. Las romerías cam-
pestres de San Marcos y San Isi-
dro, las Cruces de Mayo, Corpus,
las primeras ferias, las fiestas de
San Juan, evocan el esplendor de
la naturaleza entre abril y junio.
Las ferias grandes, las ferias ga-
naderas, los festivales musicales,
se suceden en apretada cadencia
desde julio a fines de septiembre,
hasta el umbral del otoño. El pa-
norama de la artesanía constituye
uno de los capítulos más consis-
tentes de esta ruta. La moderni-
dad de Sevilla no obsta para que
disponga de un activo nucleo
artesano. Famosa es la cerámi-
ca de los alfares del barrio de
Triana, vidriada, pintada a mano,
con una viva gama cromática. La
guarnicionería y otros oficios del
cuero, forja, vidrio, la artesanía
relacionada con la Semana Santa
y otras fiestas, la encuadernación
y fabricación de instrumentos
musicales tienen así mismo una
nutrida representación. Carmona,
Écija, Marchena, Osuna, ofrecen
también numerosas manufactu-
ras ligadas al medio tradicional
de la campiña, con algunos de los
más reputados talleres de ebanis-
tería, fabricación y restauración
de muebles de época y coches
de caballos, guarnicionería y for-
ja, junto con bordados, trenzado
con fibras vegetales y otras labo-
res. Antequera prolonga este re-
pertorio gremial, añadiendo como
especialidades además la talla en
piedra y madera, cerámica en su
propio estilo, trabajos de metal en
hierro y latón, y textiles. La albar-
donería, talabartería, la confec-
ción de objetos de esparto y otras
fibras, aún se encuentra en diver-
sos pueblos granadinos, como Al-
hama. El destino final de la ruta,
Granada, al igual que Sevilla, es
otro importante foco artesano, en
cuya producción salta a la vista
una y otra vez el influjo nazarí.
Sobresalen la alfarería y cerámi-
ca de Fajalauza, con motivos y
colores heredados de la cerámica
islámica, las taraceas, refinados
trabajos de incrustación a base
de maderas y otros materiales, la
orfebrería y joyería, la forja artís-
tica, las piezas de cobre y latón
–objetos de adorno y uso cotidia-
no, faroles de compleja geome-
tría y vidrios coloreados–, textiles
–bordados, tapices–, repujados
en cuero, así como la realización
de instrumentos de cuerda –gui-
tarras, laúdes, bandurrias–, con
artífices que destacan entre los
primeros del ramo.
Gastronomía
La sabrosa oferta gastronómica
que acompaña el transcurso de la
ruta se fundamenta en la riqueza
agrícola de las tierras que visi-
ta, donde predominan la clásica
tríada mediterránea de cereales,
olivo y vid, junto con el ganado
menor y los cultivos de regadío
y huerta tan desarrollados en
época andalusí. No faltarán a lo
largo del camino ventas, restau-
rantes, mesones, bares, mer-
cados, donde poder apreciar la
variedad, frescura y naturalidad
de los ingredientes que susten-
tan una deliciosa gastronomía. El
más común y sencillo artículo de
la alimentación andaluza, el pan,
ha dado fama a muchas poblacio-
nes del camino. De muy antigua
consideración gozan los panes
–bollos, teleras, medias y un sin-
fín de variadedes– de Alcalá de
Guadaíra y otras localidades de
la campiña, así como los molletes
de Antequera –piezas sin ape-
nas levadura y poca cochura– y
el pan de los contornos de Gra-
nada, suavizado por la finura de
las aguas. El noble fruto del olivo
es otro de los protagonistas indis-
cutibles de principio a fin del tra-
yecto. Los extensos olivares de
los municipios sevillanos, de An-
tequera, de Montefrío, proporcio-
nan excelente aceituna de mesa

Tolosa the Christian advance was
unstoppable, and after the fall
of Cordova and the countryside
of the average Guadalquivir, it

the romanticism, and after the
projection of the Peninsula in the
European context that caused the
War of Independence, Spain, and
Andalusia in particular, they be-
gan to receive an increasing at-
tention as travelling destiny. The
fast visits of Chateaubriand and
Lord Byron, that recreated the
Andalusian scene in their works,
they followed the trips and stays
of own Washington Irving, Ri-
chard Ford, Borrow, Delacroix,
David Roberts, Mérimée, Gautier,
Dumas and the most seeded of
a whole romantic generation that
spread of definitive way the en-
chantments of the Hispanic south.
Under this pioneering impulse,
Andalusia consolidated already
from mid century XIX as a forced
goal of the traveller, an objective
privileged by its natural scene, its

the route shows its importance in
the contemporary Spanish poetry.
In its cities and landscapes an

Celebrations, crafts

¿Qué significa Washington Ir-
ving, así como su principal obra
sobre La Alhambra y Granada,
“Cuentos de la Alhambra” en la
actualidad?
Como difusor del Monumento,
aunque el monumento concita
visitas de escritores y artistas ro-
mánticos, es Washington Irving
el primero que escribe un auten-
tico “best seller” de la época, so-
bre la Alhambra, su historia, sus
gentes y sus leyendas. El rápi-
do e incuestionable éxito de sus
cuentos, muy pronto traducidos
y difundidos por muchos países
especialmente los de lengua in-
glesa, será la mejor publicidad del
monumento en muchos años.
Tanto Washington Irving como
su obra Cuentos de la Alhambra
ha significado la mayor campaña
mediática que hasta la fecha se
ha podido realizar sobre el nom-
bre de Granada. La obra Cuen-
tos de la Alhambra, ha supuesto
una proyección internacional de
la Alhambra y de Granada en to-
dos los continentes. A ella se ha
atribuido en gran medida la ima-
gen mítica y legendaria con la que
internacionalmente se ha identifi-
cado la Alhambra, una especie de
palacio de ensueño y misterio que
ofrecía la oportunidad de evocar y
recrear el pasado desde la expe-
riencia del presente.
¿Cree que la Alhambra tendría
la importancia que tiene en la
actualidad de no ser por el inte-
rés que puso Irving en ella?
Evidentemente no, creo que la
promoción que este escritor ro-
mántico proyecto sobre este mo-
numento ayudó y condicionó un
posterior cuidado y trabajo de
recuperación del monumento. En
la Alhambra, Washington Irving
ve culminada esta aspiración y al
difundirla en su obra, generará el
deseo de experimentar por otros
las mismas sensaciones: recorrer
sus estancias, sentir sus mismas
inquietudes. Su libro fue una au-
téntica guía de iniciación para el
conocimiento del lugar.
Desde el Patronato de la Alham-
bra van a editar un libro sobre
las cartas de Washington Ir-
ving, que nos puede contar
Efectivamente tenemos previsto
publicar una edición del libro Las
Cartas de Washington Irving des-
de la Alhambra. Esta publicación
que forma parte de la Colección
Plural del Patronato de la Alham-
bra y el Generalife y que recoge
las cartas que Irving escribe du-
rante su estancia en el monumen-
to nazarí con estudio comentado
del catedrático Antonio Garnica
Sánchez. En ella se incorporan
los documentos completos con
su traducción inédita al español.
Posibilidad de reedición de la ver-
sión inglesa.
Será publicado por el Patronato
de la Alhambra y el Generalife en
coedición con Tinta Blanca Editor
y Editorial Almuzara. Además Edi-
ción de cuidado diseño ilustrada
por un reconocido artista contem-
poráneo. Edición limitada seriada,
con nueva traducción al español
de la versión original, realizada en
coedición con la Editorial Galaxia
Gutemberg.
Nos podría detallar el acuerdo
de colaboración con el Instituto
Cervantes de Nueva York y Lon-
dres y la Dirección General del
Libro de la Consejería Cultura
de la Junta de Andalucía donde
se pretende realizar una peque-
ña exposición de gabinete que
muestre en América y Europa
la Alhambra y su influencia en
Washington Irving.
La propuesta contempla una ex-
posición didáctica en el Instituto
Cervantes de Nueva York y Lon-
dres y en instituciones de España.
En colaboración con el Instituto
Cervantes de Nueva York y Lon-
dres y la Dirección General del
Libro de la Consejería Cultura de
la Junta de Andalucía se pretende
realizar una pequeña exposición
de gabinete que muestre en Amé-
rica y Europa la Alhambra y su in-
fluencia en Washington Irving.
Está muestra se llevará a biblio-
tecas públicas, centros culturales
y de enseñanza y museos espa-
ñoles como una actividad incluida
dentro del Plan de Fomento de
la Lectura de la Dirección Gene-
ral del Libro de la Consejería de
Cultura de la Junta de Andalucía,
y será gestionada por la Empresa
Pública de Programas Culturales.
Han diseñado una promoción
especial de la Ruta de Washing-
ton Irving, explíquenos de que
se trata.
Esta ruta recorre los pasos que,
en 1829, siguió el escritor román-
tico norteamericano Washington
Irving, fascinado por la riqueza
y el exotismo de la civilización
hispano-musulmana. Una arteria
de comunicaciones establecida
muchos siglos antes, que sirvió
de vía comercial entre el sur pe-
ninsular cristiano y el reino nazarí
de Granada.
El trayecto une las capitales de
las dos Andalucías tradicionales,
la Baja y la Alta; dos llanuras, la
Campiña y la Vega, separadas
por un sugerente viaje accidenta- María del Mar Villafranca
do. El camino oscila entre Sevilla
y Granada, las dos estaciones en Europa, atrayendo una multi-
obligadas del viaje romántico que tud de artistas, escritores, curio-
proyectó la imagen de Andalucía sos y todo tipo de viajeros.

What it means Washington Ir-
ving, just like his main work
about the Alhambra and Gra-
nada, “Tales of the Alhambra”
at the present times?
As a diffuser of the Monument,
although the monument arouses
visits of writers and romantic
artists, is Washington Irving the
first who writes an authentic
“best seller” of the time, on the
Alhambra, his history, its people
and their legend. The express
and unquestionable success of
its stories, in a moment transla-
ted and spread by many coun-
tries especially those of English
language will be the best publi-
city of the monument in many
years.
As much Washington Irving as

The work Tales of the Alhambra,

mysterious palace that offers an
opportunity of evocate and to re-
create the past since the expe-
rience of the present.
Do you think that the Alhambra
would have the importance of it

You have designed a special
promotion of the Route of
Washington Irving, explain us
this matter.
This route crosses the steps
that, in 1829, followed the North
American romantic writer Was-
hington Irving, fascinated by
the wealth and the exotic of the
Hispanic-Muslim civilisation. An
artery of communications esta-
blished many centuries before,
that served as commercial route
between the Christian peninsular
south and the Nasrid kingdom of
Granada. The passage unites
the capitals of two traditional An-
dalusia, the Low and the High;
two plains, the Countryside and
the Fertile Lowland, separated
by a suggestive injured trip. The
way oscillates between Seville
and Granada, the two forced
stations of the romantic trip that
projected the image of Andalusia
in Europe, attracting a multitude
of artists, writers, peculiar and all
type of travellers.

Situado en el antiguo bario del
Albayzín fue declarado Patrimo-
nio Mundial de la Humanidad
por la UNESCO. Es un hotel pe-
queño del siglo XVI donde des-
de las galerías podrás disfrutar
de unas maravillosas vistas a
la Ciudad Roja de día y de no-
che. El hotel está formado por
dos pequeños edificios de estilo
mudéjar y dispone de un salón
con una cubierta del mismo es-
tilo construida en 1512. El hotel
contiene un impresionante patio
al estilo árabe con una fuente,
sus balaustradas, alicatados y
columnas, y con una decoración
pintada a mano con frescos re-
nacentistas atribuidos a Alejan-
dro Mayner y Giulio Romano,
discípulos de Rafael, que visita-
ron Granada en 1520 para pintar
el Peinador de la Reina en la Al-
hambra y también el Palacio de
Santa Inés.
ONIRIA - 5
Villa Oniria ocupa un palace-
te del siglo XIX, ubicado en el
corazón de Granada. Ha sido
cuidadosamente rehabilitado si-
guiendo el estilo y técnicas de
la arquitectura tradicional de los
palacios andaluces que dota al
Oniria de un hotel para el disfru-
te de los sentidos. El olor a rosas

¿Qué representa la obra literaria
de este escritor para su estable-
cimiento y para el sector turísti-
co granadino?
Los viajes de W. Irving por Anda-
lucía y Granada en particular di-
fundieron en el mundo anglosajón
nuestra cultura. Todavía hoy tene-
mos con él y con otros viajeros
románticos una deuda de gratitud
por generar a pesar de los tópicos
una idea de Andalucía que atrae
poderosamente a turistas de todo
el mundo. Podemos describir va-
rias acciones concretas que en el
Parador de Granada rinden home-
naje a W. Irving: en las mamparas
de los baños hay fragmentos de
los Cuentos de la Alhambra; en las
fundas de las tarjetas de apertura
hay unas citas de sus obras; el pro-
pio Comedor Romántico… Pienso
que los Cuentos de la Alhambra
han hecho más por el turismo en
nuestra ciudad que muchas cam-
pañas de promoción juntas, siendo
igualmente necesarias estas.

monographic about the Route
of Washington Irving in Grana-
da. What represents the literary
work of this writer for their es-
tablishment and for the tourist
sector from Granada?
The trips of W. Irving through An-
dalusia and in particular Granada
spread our culture in the Anglo-
Saxon world. Still today we have
a gratitude debt with him and
other romantic travellers to gene-
rate in spite of the topics an idea
of Andalusia that it powerfully at-
tracts tourists worldwide. We can
describe several concrete actions
that in the parador of Granada pay
tribute to W. Irving: in the screens
of the baths there are fragments
of Stories of the Alhambra; in the
covers of aperture cards there are
appointments of its works; the own
Romantic Dining room… I think
than the tales of the Alhambra
have done more for the tourism in
our city than many together cam-
paigns of promotion, being these
equally necessary.
The cultural tourism is being
positioned like the most profi-
table option for establishments
of recognised category. What is

hemos tenido el honor de servir a
muchos jefes de estado y persona-
jes ilustres.
Hay otros salones como el Na-
zarí ¿Qué destacaría en general

recinto a la caída de la tarde cuan-

We have great desires which
it leaves the project of Antonio
Banderas ahead. Its international
projection would give a formidable
push to the diffusion of the Alham-
bra and Granada. We are con-
vinced that the mediatic impact
would be very important and with
direct consequences for the flow
from visitors to our city.

Entrevista a Manuel Bellido,
artesano constructor de guitarras
Nació en Granada (España)
en 1.939; se forma como cons-
tructor de guitarras en el taller
del maestro D. Eduardo Ferrer.
Tras su vuelta del servicio mi-
litar, se independiza y monta
su primer taller. A lo largo de
su carrera profesional pode-
mos distinguir diferentes épo-
cas: en la primera, sus instru-
mentos aparecen etiquetados
como “Vellido”. No obstante,
un buen número de dichos tra-
bajos los construyó para otros
maestros, lo que hace proba-
ble que no conserven su eti-
queta original. En una segunda
época, fruto de su asociación
con D. Antonio Marín Montero,
aparecen etiquetados como
”Montero-Bellido”. En la ter-
cera época, sus instrumentos
aparecen etiquetados con su
nombre completo, “Manuel Ló-
pez Bellido” o “Manuel L. Be-
llido”, y en la actualidad como
“Manuel Bellido”.
Desde el punto de vista técni-
co, sus guitarras son muy com-
plejas, pues domina todos los
sistemas de construcción y ha-
bitualmente los utiliza y mez-
cla a su antojo. Esta inquietud
le ha llevado a realizar impor-
tantes mejoras en diferentes
técnicas y a la construcción de
útiles que hoy encontramos en
cualquier taller de instrumen-
tos, tales como la calibradora
de lija, cuyo primer prototipo
aún está en funcionamiento en
su taller. Entre las innovacio-
nes que se le pueden atribuir
está el uso del doble fondo,
tapa e incluso aros, produc-
tos de la búsqueda de nuevos
matices al combinar maderas
diferentes. Ha construido muy
diversos instrumentos, tales
como laúdes españoles, laú-
des renacentistas y barrocos,
guitarras de todo tipo (repro-
ducciones antiguas, bajos,
guitarras de 7 ,8 ó 10 cuerdas),
tiples, charangos, requintos
,etc. Ha realizado numero-
sas restauraciones. Desde el
punto de vista estético, sus
instrumentos destacan por la
riqueza y calidad ornamental.
Es considerado por muchos
profesionales como uno de los
principales nombres de la gui-
tarrería española.
¿Cómo empieza el interés de
la familia Bellido por el arte
de la fabricación de guita-
rras?
El taller lo fundo yo en 1960
y a mi me viene el interés por
esta profesión por haber tra-
bajado y haberme formado en
esta profesión anteriormente
en el taller del Maestro Ferrer.
Después mis hijos paralela-
mente a sus estudios se van
haciendo hueco en el taller,
concretamente el que primero
empezó a trabajar en el taller
fue Jesús, fíjate que llego a
aparecer en el libro Guinnes
por ser el guitarrero más joven
del mundo en aquel tiempo.
Después se incorporó Miguel
Ángel y Mauricio, además mis
otros dos hijos están relacio-
nados con este mundo.
¿Cuántas guitarras hace al
año y trabajan con encar-
gos?
Al principio si atendía y cons-
truía por encargos, pero ahora
no. Mis hijos si los hacen ellos
tienen más compromisos, mi
hijo Jesús tiene unos clientes
de Japón que le encarga unas
20 guitarras por año, eso es
prácticamente la producción
que puede realizar un cons-
tructor al año. Yo entiendo
que los encargos tendrían más
sentido si la persona que los
realiza tiene alguna minusva-
lía, si es zurdo, pero para una
persona normal tiene menos
sentido. Porque una guitarra
primero es un instrumento mu-
sical y después es un mueble,
nosotros tenemos una serre-
ría y seleccionamos la made-
ra desde que está en tronco.
Yo entiendo que el construc-

tor debe tener la suficiente li-
bertad para decidir sobre las
combinaciones oportunas de
madera. Si te eligen la madera
y la forma de hacer las cosas
terminas haciendo un mueble
y lo que aquí se pretende es
hacer un instrumento musical
y después conseguir que sea
elegante. Pero lo más impor-
tante es conseguir que afine,
que suene bien y que sea có-
modo de tocar, esas son las
bases más importantes para
un instrumento musical.
¿Cuánto tiempo se tarda en
fabricar una guitarra artesa-
na y de donde obtienen la
materia prima?
Aproximadamente unas 100
horas de trabajo, después de
que la madera esté cortada y
seleccionada. Porque noso-
tros tenemos madera en nues-
tro taller comprada desde los
años 70, madera comprada de
ese año en países de centro
Europa. Esto da mucha segu-
ridad porque tenemos garan-
tía de que la madera está muy
seca, ahora tenemos previsto
un viaje a Italia para seguir
comprando madera.
¿Cuáles son sus clientes
habituales de reconocido
nombre nos puede nombrar
algunos?
Sí, bastantes yo me muevo
en el mundo del flamenco y te

Interview to Manuel Bellido, handmade builder of guitars
He was born in Granada (Spain)

Azulejos Fajalauza, desde 1.517
Cuéntenos brevemente la histo-
ria de su negocio. ¿Como nació
Azulejos Fajalauza?, cuáles han
sido los pros y los contras…
Desde la época árabe existe una
línea sucesiva de continuidad en
el desarrollo de nuestra actividad
artesana hasta nuestros días.
Existe un libro publicado bajo el
titulo “Azulejos Fajalauza” que re-
coge con detalle toda la historia
de nuestra empresa desde el año
1.517, año en el que está docu-
mentada la existencia ya como
artesano del primer Morales. El
primer ceramista que aparece
inscrito en el archivo municipal
de la Casa de los Cordovas, se
llamaba Hernando de Morales.
Y ya aparece entonces hacien-
do cerámicas en los documentos
existentes del primer ayuntamien-
to después de la reconquista de
Granada. El escrito existente “del
cual poseo una copia” es un poder
a procuradores, porque entonces
se unen todos los ceramistas de
aquella época y le ponen un pleito
al Ayuntamiento, porque este les
quería gravar con un impuesto
aplicable a cada hornada de ce-
rámica que salía de los hornos.
Ellos alegan que según las capitu-
laciones firmadas en la entrega de
Granada especificaban que se se-
guiría el régimen fiscal de la admi-
nistración musulmana, donde es-
taban exentos de pago alguno por
este motivo. Curiosamente no hay
constancia formal que demuestre
el resultado de este pleito, pero lo
que si está justificado es la exis-
tencia de Hernando de Morales
con anterioridad al reinado en
Granada de los Reyes Católicos.
Desde ahí tenemos documenta-
do todo el árbol genealógico con
descendencia directa e indirecta
hasta nuestros días. Fíjese que
mi abuelo, “el padre de mi padre”
se llamaba Manuel Morales, pero
realmente su nombre era Manuel
Nicodemus Morales Jiménez, mi
padre era Cecilio Morales Alonso
y yo Cecilio Morales Moreno.
Háblenos del proceso de traba-
jo que emplean en sus talleres
Aquí por tradición hemos seguido
trabajando con la aplicación ex-
haustiva del proceso artesanal, un
proceso de trabajo manual donde
siempre han predominado los mo-
tivos granadinos a base del pája-
ro, la granada… Ya en mi época
es cuando empezamos a trabajar
de manera más importante el ali-
catado árabe y a producir azulejos
en cantidades mayores, utilizando
siempre los motivos granadinos y
árabes.
¿Cuáles son las característi-
cas que diferencian la autenti-
ca cerámica de Fajalauza con
el resto de artesanías?
Los procesos son normales
siempre en casi todos los ta-
lleres, la diferencia que podría
destacarnos sobre el resto es el
diseño, así como trabajar sobre
blanco, cuerda seca y en relie-
ve cordoncillo sevillano, aunque
aquí le llamamos cordoncillo al
apretón.
¿Cómo ha evolucionado el pro-
ducto que han elaborado desde
sus inicios?
La cerámica de Fajalauza era de
carácter utilitario y a pesar de
estar reconocida a nivel interna-
cional, su distribución era mucho
más importante en toda la Andalu-
cía oriental, desde Almería, Jaén,
Málaga, Córdoba y Granada. En
estas ciudades y en sus pueblos
comían “como decían entonces
en platos de Graná” platos grana-
dinos. Recuerdo que en los años
60 las gentes de un pueblo situa-
do junta a Vélez Málaga que se
llama Benamocarra, cambiaban
nuestros platos y fuentes por sus
pasas, entonces se vendían ca-
miones enteros de cerámica en
estos pueblos. Entonces salieron
al mercado los plásticos y los du-
raléx ya empezó a decaer nues-
tras ventas de una manera impor-
tante, entonces nuestro producto
paso de ser utilitario a suntuario,
con la única salida de abrirle agu-
jeritos a las cerámicas para ser
colgadas como obras decorativas.
Y como usted sabe un plato col-
gado en la pared “dura más que
un martillo enterrado en paja”.

¿Qué alternativa comercial
planteó entonces para salir de
esta difícil situación?
Hubo que ingeniarse otras sali-
das, coincidiendo con la subida
del sector de la construcción de
principio de los años 70 empeza-
mos a promocionar líneas de pro-
ducción artesanal de azulejería.
Y esto nos sirvió para suministrar
por ejemplo cientos de urbaniza-
ciones residenciales de lujo de la
Costa del Sol, así como innumera-
bles villas de famosos en la costa.
En nuestra Costa Tropical hemos
trabajado en el chalet que tienen
el Rey Balduino y Fabiola en Mo-
tril, desde las piezas del despacho
del Rey, paredes y suelo con pie-
zas únicas hasta los azulejos de
la piscina se los hemos elaborado
en nuestros talleres.
Hay trabajos elaborados por
usted colocados en obras de
medio mundo, inclusive en La
Alhambra, háblenos de este
asunto
Sí, por ejemplo en el Patio de los
Arrayanes de la Alhambra hicimos
el zócalo del patio, cuando Prieto
Moreno era Arquitecto conserva-
dor de la Alhambra, fue un desafío
por parte del Sr. Moreno, en medio
de una conversación me dijo que
“hay que hacer un zócalo para el
patio de los Arrayanes, pero no
hay quién los haga” y le dije ¡pero
que está diciendo usted D. Fran-
cisco, yo se lo hago! y me dijo
“¡hazme un metro!” y al final me
hizo todo el encargo. Además he-
mos restaurado los ventanales del
Salón de Embajadores, El Cuarto
Dorado, La Galería, los suelos de
la mezquita, el suelo del Salón de
los Abencerrajes, aunque curiosa-
mente mi primer trabajo fue cuan-
do solo tenía yo 18 años y hice
unas olambrillas verdes de 11 x11
para el Sala de los Reyes, junto al
Patio de los Leones.

obras que recuerde y quiera
destacar por su importancia
También he trabajado en el Ma-
nuel de Falla, tanto en los jardines
como en los murales, los servicios
del Carmen de los Mártires, todos
los suelos del claustro el comedor
y patio de El Parador de Turismo
de Granada. En la Casa de los
Tiros toda la cerámica que hay
es nuestra, la Casa del Greco en
Toledo, un mural impresionante
en el Restaurante la pérgola en el
Hotel Don Carlos de Marbella, en
el Meliá de Granada hice un mural
estilo Fajalauza.
Como ve usted el futuro para
este sector
La verdad es que lo veo difícil,
a pesar de la importante bajada
actual de la demanda existe una
sobreoferta de productos proce-
dentes de mercados asiáticos,
como es el caso de productos que
proceden de China. Pero desde
Fajalauza vamos a seguir traba-
jando con nuestro proceso habi-
tual con el único objetivo de pro-
ducir piezas singulares y únicas
para satisfacer a nuestros clien-
tes, desmarcándonos totalmente
de las producciones en serie que
no benefician el carácter artesano
de esta profesión.

Azulejos Fajalauza, since 1.517
Tell us briefly the history of
your business. How did it born
Azulejos Fajalauza?, What have
you been the advantages and
disadvantages…?
Since the Arabian times, a succes-
sive line of continuity exists in the
developing of our handmade ac-
tivity until our days. A book exists
which was published under the tit-
le “Azulejos Fajalauza” that all the
history of our company gathers
in detail from year 1,517, year in
which is already documented the
existence like craftsman of the first
Morales. The first ceramist who
appears enrolled in the municipal
file of the Casa de los Cordovas,
he was called Hernando de Mora-
les. And he already appears then
making ceramic in existing docu-
ments of the first city council after
the reconquest of Granada. The
existing writing “of which I own
a copy” is a power to solicitors,
because then all the ceramists of
that one time are united and they
sue to him to the City council, be-
cause this he wanted to them to

these cities and their towns they
ate “as they said then in plates
of Graná” plates from Granada.

How do you see the future in
this sector
The truth is that I see it difficult,
despite of the important present
descent of the demand exist an
oversupply of products from the
Asian markets, such as the pro-
ducts from China. But since Faja-
lauza we are going to continue to
work with our usual process with
the only aim of produce outstan-
ding and unique pieces to satisfy
our clients, unselect us totally of
the serial productions that do not
benefit of the handmade nature of
this profession.

o menos estilizadas, con diversos
materiales, maderas, escayolas y
cerámicas, que reproducen arteso-
nados, taraceas, vasijas, elementos
ornamentales, mosaicos y bajo-
rrelieves. Distintas vasijas y vasos,
como los originales de la Alhambra,
se han reproducido en todos los ta-
maños posibles.
Diversos frisos y mosaicos que re-
producen esas formas, ornamentan
muchas de las tradicionales casas
andaluzas. La utilización de esos
elementos, suele ser repetitiva, tal
como se dan en su contexto origi-
nal. Las escayolas y bajorrelieves
conservan y repiten los mismos mo-
tivos tradicionales en forma de frisos
y orlas.
En la Alhambra se encuentran prác-
ticamente la totalidad de las posi-
bles formas geométricas, en que se
pueden basar las decoraciones con
mosaicos.
Este terreno, parecía acotado, con
poca innovación sobre el mismo.
Sin embargo -tenia que ser en Gra-
nada- actualmente desarrolla su
obra un pintor ceramista, que aporta
nuevas propuestas de desarrollo e
innovación sobre esos mismos mo-
tivos.
Miguel Fdez. Valdivieso –Valdif- de-
sarrolla una obra, que parte del le-
gado de formas de los tradicionales
bajorrelieves árabes, pero se arries-
ga, aportando nuevos elementos,
formas y tratamientos de color.
Las composiciones de Valdif están
formadas por pequeñas piezas de
terracota en relieve, en forma de
mosaicos cuadrados. Sin embargo,
el hallazgo estético de sus obras
consiste en superponer en forma
de relieve, otras formas geométricas
sobre los mosaicos cuadrados, que
le aportan una nueva dimensión.
Juega con las transiciones, efectos
de color, degradados, y pátinas, que
generalmente convergen en un pun-
to central, que capta la atención, con
gran impacto decorativo. Sus com-
posiciones son siempre originales,
y pese a tener elementos comunes
en los relieves, la distribución de las
piezas y el tratamiento del color es
siempre única en sus obras, conser-
vando sus raíces árabes.
Valdif es un pintor granadino con
formación autodidacta, y en el desa-
rrollo de su actividad, ha pasado por
diversas técnicas y estilos. A los 20
años mostró su primera exposición
individual, en el Centro Artístico de
Granada. En años posteriores mos-
tró sus obras en diversas ciudades
del pais. Su contacto con el mundo
de la cerámica se produjo hace 18
años y estableció su taller artesanal.
Fruto de esta simbiosis, surge esta
nueva aportación artística, que na-
ció en el año 2002.
Por el impacto decorativo de estas
obras, para su promoción, Valdif ha
escogido una vía poco convencio-
nal: la exposición en diversas ferias
de muestras y decoración. Ha asisti-
do a muestras en Sevilla, Valencia,
Málaga, 1ª feria Euro-Arabe en Gra-
nada y últimamente a Euroal Torre-
molinos y otras 2 ultimas Ferias de
muestras en Granada.
La vía escogida es quizás la razón
por la cual la obra de Valdif ha llega-
do a apartados sitios del mundo. Ha

realizado murales para lujosos hote-
les en India y varios países árabes, y
mandado cuadros a países lejanos,
como Malasia. En España, aparte
de vender gran parte de su obra,
a diversos clientes, especialmente
profesionales, arquitectos etc. ha
realizado murales para diversos ho-
teles., entre ellos uno de los últimos
y mas lujosos hoteles de Ibiza: Fe-
nicia Talasso Spa. En Granada ha
realizado un mural para un edificio
de oficinas, cuya característica es-
pecial es estar situado en el suelo,
cubierto por cristal.
Sin embargo esta vía, tiene tam-
bién, connotaciones negativas. La
obra de Valdif es muy poco cono-
cida en los medios artísticos, y una
gran desconocida también para los
medios, de los cuales podría recibir
cierto apoyo, por su raigambre den-
tro del contexto cultural andaluz.
Obras de Valdif decoran casas, in-
cluso de personajes importantes,
como la princesa Hissa Saad de
Kuwait, o el cantante Julio Iglesias.
Sin embargo es un gran desconoci-
do, para la mayoría.
Valdif mantiene una exposición per-
manente con su obra en Cenes de
la Vega – Granada. Esta ex-
posición esta anexa a un club que
programa actuaciones de música en
directo: Organ Jazz, y tiene la ca-
racterística que se puede visitar en
el mismo horario nocturno de jueves
a sábados. En esta exposición,
Valdif recibió el pasado mes la visi-
ta de la princesa Beatriz Hoenlohe
Yturbe, la cual compro una obra, e
hizo un nuevo encargo, en el cual
actualmente trabaja. Una obra en
blanco, totalmente realizada en ce-
rámica, con un desarrollo particular
de figuras geométricas y motivos de
origen árabe. Beatriz, gran conoce-
dora del mundo artístico, e incluso
con amistad personal con algunos
de los responsables del Legado An-
dalusí, mostró su extrañeza de que
esta obra no fuera conocida y apo-
yada explícitamente.

nuestro granito de arena, para que
sea considerada.

Valdif; Innovation in the andalusí aesthetics

The aesthetic stamp, that the Arab
culture leaves us, to its passage by
the peninsula, and especially in te-
rritories of Andalusia, is clear. During
diverse generations craftsmen and
artists, have continued reproducing
reasons and forms, more or less
streamlined, with diverse materials,
wood, stucco and ceramic, that re-
produce artesonados, marquetries,
ornamental, mosaic containers, ele-
ments and bas-relief. Different con-
tainers and glasses, like the original
ones of the Alhambra, have reprodu-
ced in all the possible sizes.
Diverse friezes and mosaics that
reproduce those forms, decorate
many of the traditional Andalusian
houses. The use of those elements
usually is repetitive, as they occur in
his original context. The stucco and
bas-relief conserve and repeat the
same traditional reasons in the form
of friezes and trims.
In the Alhambra is practically the
totality of the possible geometric
forms, on that the decorations with
mosaics can be based.
This land seemed delimited, with litt-
le innovation on the same.
Nevertheless – have to be in Grana-
da- at the moment it develops to its
work a painter ceramist, who contri-
butes to new proposals of develop-
ment and innovation on those same
reasons.
Miguel Fdez. Valdivieso - Valdif- de-
velops a work that leaves from the
legacy of forms of traditional Arab
bas-relief but it risks, contributing
new elements, forms and treatments
of colour.
The compositions of Valdif are for-
med by small terra-cotta pieces in
relief, in the form of square mosaics.
Nevertheless, the aesthetic finding
of its works consists of superposing
in the form of relief, other geome-
tric forms on the squared mosaics,
which contribute a new dimension to
him. It plays with transitions, effects
of colour, degraded, and pátinas,
that converges generally in a central
point, that catches the attention, with
great decorative impact. Their com-
positions are always original, and in
spite of having elements common in
the reliefs, the distribution of the pie-
ces and the treatment of the colour
she is always unique in his works,
conserving his Arab roots.
Valdif is a painter from Granada with
self-taught formation, and in the de-
velopment of its activity, it has pas-
sed through diverse techniques and
styles. The 20 years it showed his
first individual exhibition, in El Centro
artistico of Granada. In later years it
showed its works in diverse cities of
the country. Its contact with the world
of the ceramics took place 18 years
ago and established its artisan fac-

aún hemos pretendido encontrar a un personaje de la calle, un ciudadano de a pié. Motivo por el cual desde SPIRITSUR hemos considerado que usted cumple con el perfil

Un galés en Granada, como de-
cimos aquí un “guiri” ¿desde
cuando y porqué?
Desde 1971 llevo viniendo a Gra-
nada y Málaga por vacaciones,
porque mi padre es español y
tengo familia aquí. Me instalé de-
finitivamente en agosto de 1989,
porque me atraía mucho la idea
de un cambio.
¿Por qué se ha quedado a vivir
y trabajar en Granada?
Deseaba conocer más a fondo
Andalucía, especialmente Grana-
da, me fascinaba la gran riqueza
cultural hispano-musulmana, su
historia, sus tradiciones y su gen-
te. Me llamaba mucho la atención
comprobar como se mantenían y
se mantienen aún, muchas tradi-
ciones antiguas, especialmente
en los pueblos.
Usted que debido al trabajo que
desarrolla dentro de su empre-
sa Andalucía Tours, trata a dia-
rio con aventureros viajeros y
viajeros que nos visitan practi-
cando el turismo cultural. ¿Qué
aprecia en ellos respecto a la
influencia que ha tenido y tiene
la obra literaria de Washington
Irving en ellos?
Muchos de ellos vienen atraídos
por sus libros, especialmente el
de “Cuentos de la Alhambra” y
preguntan sobre la verdad de las
historias que cuenta.
De todas las rutas que realiza
con clientes europeos, asiá-
ticos, americanos, ¿cual de
ellas son de mayor interés para
ellos?
Especialmente nos demandan
las rutas con historia, aquellas
donde además de disfrutar de un
hermoso paisaje único, aún en-
contramos vestigios del mundo
árabe por Granada. Aquellas por
donde vemos resto musulmanes
de edificaciones, fortificaciones,
caminos, cementerios reales,…
Destaca, nuestra ruta de sende-
rismo o en bicicleta que recorre
los alrededores de la Alhambra,
desde la que disfrutamos de una
posición privilegiada para con-
templarla, junto al Sacromonte y
su Abadía, el Albaicín y parte de la
ciudad de Granada, pasamos por
el Palacio Real de descanso, por
antiguos aljibes y acequias, que
siguen en uso hoy día, y ruinas
musulmanas. También despierta
gran interés la ruta en 4x4 a la
Alpujarra o la del Valle de Lecrín,
con la que visitamos algunos de
los pueblos de esta comarca que
ha cautivado a innumerables ar-
tistas y escritores, y que fueron
el último refugio de los árabes en
Andalucía, al ser expulsados de
Granada por negarse a convertir-
se al Cristianismo, Conservan aún
numerosos vestigios de la antigua
cultura bereber, especialmente
su arquitectura y sistema de ace-
quias de riego. Fue aquí donde se
refugió Boabdil, último rey musul-
mán, durante unos meses, des-
pués de entregar Granada a los
Cristianos. Y por último, y no por
ello menos solicitada, nuestra ruta
en 4x4 a Sierra Nevada, inicián-
dola en Monachil, pasamos por la
antigua Gran Mezquita, converti-
da en Iglesia hoy día, y siguien-
do antiguos caminos y senderos
llegaremos al Veleta, 2º pico más
alto de la Península Ibérica.
Algunas de las rutas que usted
organiza recorren importantes
ciudades relacionadas con la
época del Reino de Granada.
Destacaría la gran similitud que
hay entre muchos de nuestros
pueblos con estas regiones, ya
que los musulmanes expulsados
de Granada, se trasladaron a
Chaouen, Tentuán y Fez. Cami-
nar por Chaouen es como estar
en cualquiera de los pueblos de
la Alpujarra Granadina. Algunos
de los descendientes de Tetuán
heredaron y aún conservan las
llaves de su casa del Albaizín. En
Fez se instaló la corte de Boabdil
y sus fieles seguidores, y allí mu-
rió el último rey de la ciudad de
Granada ayudando a su amigo el
Sultán en una batalla defendiendo
la ciudad de Fez, dónde era muy
querido por sus habitantes, que le
construyeron una vivienda emu-
lando su querida Alhambra de
Granada, con su propio patio de
los leones.
Solo una observación, sabe
usted que tiene un importante
parecido físico con Washington
Irving, ¿lo sabía?
No, no lo sabía. Je, je, je,…

¿Cuál es la situación actual del
sector hostelero?
Entiendo que no es mala, que no es
lo mismo que decir que es buena.
El sector de la hostelería y el turis-
mo está soportando la crisis como
pocos. En mi opinión el sector no
está tan mal como otros, pero la
crisis terminará llegando, ya hay
datos que dicen que el año 2009 no
será bueno y desde luego el ultimo
trimestre del año 2008 no ha sido
bueno. Desde luego hay un exceso
de oferta que terminará afectando
al sector de forma negativa, en mi
opinión hemos estado creciendo
en oferta hotelera por encima de
la demanda, el mercado es sabio y
lo terminará ajustando, por lo que
vienen tiempos difíciles. Sin embar-
go estoy igualmente convencido de
que el sector tiene fortalezas muy
importantes que nos permitirán que
cada una de las empresas que lo
forman continúen en el mercado
y ofreciendo servicios de calidad,
contribuyendo a que Granada sea
una referencia como destino turís-
tico.
¿Cuáles son los retos y proble-
mas a los que se enfrenta el tu-
rismo granadino en los futuros
años?
Los retos y problemas se conca-
tenan unos con otros. La sobredi-
mensión de la oferta repercutirá
negativamente en el sector, proba-
blemente haya un ajuste en el mer-
cado, pero Granada como destino
turístico tiene recursos y atractivos
suficientes para soportar esta situa-
ción que lógicamente tendrá que
remitir.
Los principales retos del sector po-
demos identificarlos entre otros en
los siguientes puntos:
- Aumento de la promoción.
- Planes específicos de promoción
para cada segmento de mercado.
- Apertura de nuevos mercados
como en Oriente Medio.
- Reconducir el exceso de oferta.
- Desarrollo del parque tecnológi-
co.
- Potenciación del Puerto de Motril
- Desarrollo constante del I+D+i,
con implicación de nuestra magnifi-
ca Universidad.
- Finalización de las infraestructu-
ras.
- Potenciación del aeropuerto.
- Mantenimiento de los vuelos de
bajo coste.
Todos ello son retos que sin ser di-
rectamente del sector contribuirán
muy positivamente a que el sector
continúe ocupando lugares de pri-
vilegio en el mercado nacional e
internacional.
Desde el punto de vista netamente
empresarial he de decir que el em-
presariado cumple con su obliga-
ción de continuar invirtiendo en el
mismo, y las pruebas me remito, te-
nemos una de las mejores plantas
hoteleras de España que es como
decir del mundo, las gastronomía
granadina es referencia en todo el
Estado, sus servicios turísticos, su
oferta de ocio, sus campings…., en
verdad podemos sentirnos orgullo-
sos de tener un sector que puja con
los mejores de España.
¿Cómo valoraría las estadísticas
de afluencia de la actualidad con
respecto a anteriores años?
Bueno ya te he dicho que la afluen-
cia de viajeros ha disminuido signi-
ficativamente en términos muy pa-
recidos como al resto de Andalucía
y de España, tenemos menos tu-
ristas extranjeros, lo peor es que el
turista nacional se está resintiendo
y esto si es un verdadero problema,
ya que el sector valora muy positi-
vamente el comportamiento del na-
cional y sus “escapadas de fin de
semana o puentes”
¿Qué tipo de iniciativas está to-
mando el sector hostelero para
que Granada no sea una ciudad
de paso solo para visitar la Al-
hambra?
Muy importantes y a ello ya he he-
cho mención. El empresariado esta
en constante inversión en el sector
ofreciendo servicios de primerísimo
nivel. Desde la Federación se están
desarrollando acciones muy impor-
tantes como son una central de re-
servas, convenios con empresas,
desarrollo de producto turístico,
planes de acción concretos.
La marca GRAciasdeNADA ha sido
un ejemplo muy significativo del
empresariado para dotar al destino
de una marca de la que carencia
que ha tenido una repercusión muy
positiva y que la Federación conti-
nua potenciado.
Su aportación constante al Plan de
Excelencia con una inversión de
10 millones de euros por parte de
la Junta de Andalucía y el Ayunta-
miento es otras de las magnificas
acciones que conformarán nuevos
productos que sumar a los ya exis-
tentes.
Además Granada posee mas de
100 monumentos catalogados,
posee un magnifico Parque de las
Ciencias, una Sierra única en toda
Europa, una Costa Tropical que
sólo se encuentra en el trópico, el
Altiplano con sus cuevas y su Este-
pa, todo ello conforman un destino
que junto a los servicios turísticos
nos hacen diferentes.
¿Cree que se debería utilizar la
Julian Martín Arjona, en su despacho
‘cultura del tapeo’ como un re-
clamo turístico? ¿por qué?
Si, por supuesto. Es ya un reclamo
turístico en si mismo y además de-
bemos de utilizarlo y potenciarlo,
pero debemos de ofrecer una tapa
de calidad y diferenciada, en ello
estamos trabajando, pero la tapa
tiene un sello inconfundible en Gra-
nada y para Granada que debemos
de aprovechar.
¿Qué buscan los turistas en la
hostelería granadina así como
en nuestra ciudad?
Nuestros servicios son deman-
dados por los turistas, la tapa, la
gastronomía, sus magníficos res-
taurantes, su planta hotelera, sus
servicios complementarios, su
magnifico ocio nocturno, su am-
biente, sus inmensos recursos en-
dógenos…. Todo ello nos diferencia
de muchos destinos. En Granada
capital y su provincia buscan lo
que ya hemos mencionado, unos
recursos endógenos sin compara-
ción en todo el mundo. Granada es
un crisol de cultura de paisajes, de
monumentos, de rincones que la
hacen sin igual y que son muy valo-
rados por el turista.
¿Qué repercusión tiene el traba-
jo literario de Washington Irving
actualmente sobre el sector hos-
telero de nuestra ciudad?.
Muy importante y agradezco la
pregunta. Próximamente celebra-
remos su 150 aniversario y eso tie-
ne un amplio eco en toda la cultura
anglosajona especialmente en la
estadounidense. El Patronato de la
Alhambra tiene previsto una serie
de actos que sin duda contribuirán
positivamente en el sector. Cultura

reposicionar a este escritor, Gra-
nada y la Alhambra en el turismo

¿Crees que se explota lo sufi-
ciente la imagen de Irving para
potenciar el turismo granadino?
No, yo creo que no, ese es otro de
los iconos que tenemos desapro-
vechado con lo importante que el
turista americano es para Grana-
da. Este debe de ser uno de esos
recursos permanentes que nos de-
ben de servir para mostrar su obra,
desarrollar encuentros internacio-
nales de escritores, unir ciudades
literarias del mundo. La Federación
lleva tiempo persiguiendo este pro-
yectos que una ciudades y literarios
del mundo, como son Irving, Lorca,
Heminwey, Kafka, y todos los gran-
des escritores europeos, ello sería
un recurso turístico-cultural perma-
nente.
Valore los beneficios que ha ob-
tenido la Federación de hostele-
ros de Granada con el acuerdo
establecido con el Legado Anda-
lusí.
Muy positivo. El acuerdo entre la
Federación y el Legado persigue lo
que se ha hecho con la Ruta Xaco-
bea, cultura-gastronomía-turismo.
Queremos poner en valor los esta-
blecimientos de la provincia ubica-
dos en las rutas del legado anda-
lusí, es un proyecto importantísimo
en el que estamos trabajando y que
llevará a cabo una vertebración de
la provincia, dotando a nuestros
pueblos de aquello que los demás
buscan. Desde la Federación tene-
mos puestas nuestras máximas ilu-
siones en este proyecto. La Fede-
ración tiene ámbito provincial y ello
es muy importante para nosotros,
desde la empresa “grande” debe-
mos de apoyar la pequeña y a la de
la provincia.
¿Podría contarnos alguna anéc-
dota de los visitantes que vienen
siguiendo el legado de Irving en
la ciudad?
No la verdad que no. Seguro que
de ello sabe el Patronato de la Al-
hambra, pero lo que si es importan-
te es que todos nos concienciemos
de que este es un recurso en si
mismo que debemos de poner en
valor.
¿Cree que el sector hotelero gra-
nadino está preparado para com-
petir con el resto de España?
Si, sin duda, de forma tajante. Gra-
nada es un valor único no solo en
España sino en el mundo, somos
fuertes, nos sentimos importantes
y el empresariado granadino del
sector trabaja sin descanso, se lo
puedo asegurar, para salir hacia
adelante, sus empresa, el destino
y GRANADA, algo de lo que nos
sentimos especialmente orgullosos
de contribuir a que esta ciudad sea
mundialmente conocida en todos
los ámbitos.

Which is the present situation of
the catering trade sector?
I understand that it is not bad, that
is not just like to say that it is good.
The sector of catering trade and the
tourism are supporting the crisis like
few. In my opinion the sector is not
as bad as others, but the crisis will
end up arriving, already there are
data that say that year 2009 will not
be good and of course I complete
trimester of year 2008 has not been
good. Of course there is an excess
of supply that will end up affecting the
sector of negative form, in my opi-
nion we have been growing in hotel
supply over the demand, the market
is wise it will end up and it fitting, rea-
son why come difficult times. Never-
theless also I am convinced that the
sector has very important strengths
that they will allow us that each one
of the companies form that it continue
in the market and offering services of
quality, contributing to that Granada
is a reference as tourist destiny.
Which are the challenges and
problems which the tourism from
Granada faces in the future years?
The challenges and problems are
concatenated with others. The over-
size of the supply will repel nega-
tively in the sector, probably is an
adjustment in the market, but Gra-
nada as tourist destiny has attractive
resources and sufficient to support
this situation that logically it will have
to send.
The main challenges of the sector
we can identify them in the following
points among others: Increase of
the promotion, specific plans of pro-
motion for each segment of market,
opening of new markets like in the
Middle East, to lead back the ex-
cess of supply, development of the
technological park, involution of the
Port of Motril, constant development
of the I+D+i, with implication of our
superb University, conclusion of in-
frastructures, involution of the airport,
and maintenance of the flights of low
cost
All it is challenges that without being
directly of the sector will contribute
very positively to that the sector con-
tinues occupying places of privilege
in the national and international mar-
ket.
From the point of view of the enter-
prise I have to say that the business
perform one’s duty to continue inves-
ting in the same, and the tests I am
sent, we have one of the best hotel
plants of Spain that is like saying of
the world, the gastronomy from Gra-
nada is reference in all the State, its
tourist services, its supply of leisure,
his campings…., in truth we can feel
us proud to have a sector that bids

How it would value the statistics
of affluence of the present time
with respect to previous years?

School of Catering Trade, every

ment of the same and another
series of circumstances have ge-
nerated a general deterioration of
catering trade, as far as attention,
quality in the service, etc. All this
affects in the valuation that we
can realise of catering trade from
Granada in some of its cases.
We must work watching the fu-
ture and learning of the errors of
the past. All this happens to re-
inforce the professionalization of
the sector.
What is in your opinion the di-
fference between the offer of
the tourist sector of Granada
with regard to the offer which
offer other provinces as Mala-
ga, Almeria…?
We are one of the European more
visited cities. The catering trade
of Granada is very influenced by
the city. Granada in himself is di-
fferent, is full of resistances as
far as its climate, landscape and
people. It is not strange to me
that “Boabdil” cried by her, the
last Nasrid king. Granada rea-
lly offers a cultural, gastronomic
variety, of formation and leisure
very superior as a whole to the
rest of the bordering provinces.

gastronomy from Granada?

ses y de cualquier punto de la geografía mundial han pasado por este lugar, maravillados por su encanto y conservación que parece no haber sufrido el paso de los años.
Exactamente en que año se fun-
do y como han evolucionado has-
ta ahora
Exactamente en el año 1870 es
cuando se abre este establecimien-
to, entonces abrió sus puertas sien-
do una “Parada de Posta”, el esta-
blecimiento lo abrió un señor que
al poco tiempo lo traspasó a otra
familia. Posteriormente fue cuando
nuestra familia se hizo con la pro-
piedad del establecimiento pasando
de generación en generación hasta
el día de hoy. Mi abuelo se quedó
con el negocio en el año 1.911, hay
muy pocas tabernas en Andalucía
que perduren desde esta época,
solo hay un dos o tres que son de
la misma época y se pueden consi-
derar como “Tabernas Centenarias”.
Cual es la receta para que este
establecimiento no haya alterado
su aspecto ni singularidad en el
paso de tantos años.
El secreto es la adaptación de cada
nuestra familia a cada época que
nos ha tocado vivir y mantener la
calidad, ese es el secreto. A los
clientes hay que fidelizarlos con
tres argumentos, calidad, calidad y

Mi público no está en Internet…
Pues será el único público que no está en Internet
Antes de nada, quiero agradecer a Juan José Romera que haya considerado de interés las humildes
aportaciones que yo pueda hacer a esta publicación. Eso es algo que me halaga y así quiero mani-
festarlo públicamente. Pero no sólo me siento halagado; también me siento comprometido. Compro-
metido con él y contigo que me estás leyendo y, sobre todo, con el tema que nos ocupa, que absorbe
gran parte de mi tiempo y consume buena parte de mis energías. Así que ruego indulgencia para las
imprecisiones que sobrevendrán, seguro, de la mano de la ilusión y de la vehemencia que siempre
impone la pasión.

No creo necesario ser exhaustivo a
la hora de calibrar la importancia de
Internet en nuestra sociedad, porque
la mayoría de los presentes son bue-
nos conocedores del medio, pero al-
gunos datos pueden ayudar a enten-
der cuál es su verdadera dimensión
a quien no esté familiarizado con él:
- Según red.es, la penetración de
Internet en España llega al 43,9%
de los hogares con 19 millones de
usuarios estimados.
- Una encuesta realizada por el bus-
cador Ask en España revelo que una
de cada tres personas han realizado
sus compras de navidad a través de
la Red.
- El 80% de las personas que rea-
lizan una compra de importe medio
alto, consultan todos los datos y
comparativas en Internet antes de
tomar la decisión de compra.
Cuando hace más de 5 años empe-
cé a plantearme Internet como un
medio para compartir mi gusto por
el flamenco, lo hice con bastante
descreimiento, pues mi experiencia
anterior con la ‘red de redes’ me li-
mitaba la visión a la de un usuario
‘normal’, la visión del que busca con-
tenidos y no del que los crea. Por de-
formación profesional deduje que In-
ternet puede ser usado para muchas
actividades, y que para cualquiera
de éstas existen aparatos capaces
de desarrollarlas muchísimo mejor:
- Subir a una Web largos textos
para que el navegante los lea, es,
en cierto modo, un error, porque la
comunicación escrita en Internet ha
de ser objetiva, directa e impactante
si queremos atraer la atención del
internauta. La avidez de contenidos,
la prisa por ver, por encontrar, son
enemigas de la calma que requiere
el ejercicio de la lectura. El lector de
libros sigue siendo eso, lector de li-
bros, y abomina de la pantalla.
- Otra de las posibilidades que nos
ofrece Internet es escuchar músi-
ca, para lo que hay que esperar un
tiempo a que el archivo sonoro baje
y luego lo escuchamos en unos alta-
voces de mala calidad; y eso cuando
la calidad sonora del archivo no esté
comprometida por una mala conver-
sión o una compresión inadecuada.
Y en el salón tenemos un equipo de
alta fidelidad del que nos acordamos
remotamente.
- El video es otra de las posibilidades
del medio. Pero aún son archivos
que pesan demasiado. O mejor, las
comunicaciones aún son lo suficien-
temente lentas como para que el vi-
deo sea una carga pesada, así que
hay que restarle calidad para colgar-
lo en la red. Y tenemos al alcance de
la mano magníficos DVD’s y Home
Cinema.
- Y por último, los foros y los chats,
que trocaron la sana costumbre de
escribir cartas que contenían la im-
pronta personal de quien las envia-
ba, por la garantía del anonimato
que promueve una suerte de ocul-
tación, de mascarada. Cierto que te
permitía ‘conocer’ a más gente, pero
el precio, a veces, era excesivo para
los más crédulos.
Entonces, ¿para qué sirve Internet?
La respuesta es sencilla. Realmen-
te, aún no hemos aprendido a usar
Internet. No hemos encontrado su
verdadera utilidad, algo para lo que
este medio sea, si no el único, sí el
mejor.
Poco tiempo después descubrí que
en mi reflexión había un error. Y ade-
más, era un error grave. Como se
suele decir, yo buscaba un bosque,
y los árboles no me dejaban verlo.
Internet es un medio de comunica-
ción; y como en cualquier medio es
importante el formato y la distribu-
ción. Eso ya lo tenemos: la distribu-
ción es tan económica como com-
prar un dominio y pagar un módico
precio por el alojamiento en un ser-
vidor; y el formato sólo está limitado
por la imaginación y por el dominio
de la tecnología, y con respecto a
esto último, cada vez menos debido
a la irrupción de gestores de conteni-
do de manejo cada vez más intuitivo.
Así pues, las cualidades que lo ha-
cen especial son tres : que, como
hemos visto, no se necesita una
gran infraestructura, la rapidez de
elaboración de los contenidos per-
mite niveles de actualización muy
elevados y cambios de estrategia
rapidísimos, y que permite la interac-
tividad de forma inmediata.
La mayor ventaja es, sin duda, la
interactividad porque fomenta un
diálogo entre el generador de conte-
nidos y el internauta que permite que
aquél obtenga un conocimiento con-
siderable de los gustos, preferencias
y necesidades de quienes visitan
asiduamente su site, pudiendo lle-
gar, si quisiera, a segmentar e inclu-
so a generar contenidos ‘a la carta’.
Es más, tendríamos que decir que
el destinatario además de elegir, por
el mismo medio comparte con sus
contactos, dando lugar al marketing
viral, algo absolutamente novedoso
y crucial en los mercados actuales;
una suerte de publicidad ‘primaria’,
un ‘boca a boca’ digital. Su impor-
tancia es tal que en la actualidad se
pueden tomar atajos sorprendentes
con sólo colocar un video en youtu-
be.com, e inducir a que los más ave-
zados hagan propuestas políticas
dentro de esta dinámica, como hizo
Hillary Clinton presentando su candi-
datura a la presidencia de los EEUU
antes en Internet que en Televisión,
por ejemplo. O la que fue candidata
socialista a la presidencia de Fran-
cia, que abrió una sede de su partido
en el sitio ‘Second life’, un mundo
paralelo virtual.
Después de hacer esta reflexión,
creo que podrán entender mi expe-
riencia con Internet:
Yo empecé con esto de Internet de
forma accidental. Nunca se me ha-
bía ocurrido que yo podría ser un ge-
nerador de contenidos hasta un día
en que un portal local me propuso
escribir algo. Yo pensé que de lo me-
jor que podía escribir era de flamen-
co, puesto que es una pasión que
cultivo desde niño. Y lo mejor que
podía aportar al medio y al flamenco
en general, era generar contenidos
del flamenco cercano a mí, y tan le-
jano al resto del mundo. El flamenco
de Almería, que aunque existe, y con
una idiosincrasia propia, es bastante
desconocido. Las dos páginas que
me propusieron acabó siendo un
portal cuya preparación me costó 2
años de trabajo.
Se llamaba Almería Cabal y lle-
gó a ser un referente, porque era
el primer site que contenía todo el
flamenco de una provincia. Afortu-
nadamente duró lo que duró. Muy

poco tiempo. Y lo digo porque era
un portal que siendo rico y completo
en contenidos, era imperfecto en su
concepción. No tenía estrategia co-
mercial ninguna. Es decir, no tenía
ningún sistema de financiación. Así,
lo que empezó siendo un proyecto
ilusionante, terminó siendo una terri-
ble decepción. Son muchos los por-
tales que se cierran mensualmente
por falta de estrategia comercial, o
por falta de planificación. Pero yo
aprendí muchas cosas que me sir-
vieron para emprender otro proyec-
to, que es, en definitiva, el que me ha
llevado a escribir estas líneas.

gen un proyecto en Internet son los
mismos que deben servir de base
en cualquier empresa que se precie,
aunque el objetivo fundamental no
tenga previsto el beneficio económi-
co. Es decir, hay que diseñar una es-
trategia comercial, hay que generar
un producto y un servicio de calidad,
hay que utilizar distintas técnicas de
marketing, aunque sea de una forma
intuitiva, y sobre todo, hay que ser
constante.
Pero también aprendí que no es
necesario aportar a la red aquellas
cosas a las que los demás no tienen
acceso. También se pueden crear
contenidos de calidad partiendo de
uno mismo.
Hace ya 6 años que se bautizó con
el nombre de blogosfera a un fenó-
meno que ha revolucionado la Red:
gestores de contenidos que propor-
cionan herramientas intuitivas y ex-
traordinariamente sencillas con las
que cualquier persona puede crear
su propio espacio en el que publicar
noticias, opiniones, recibir comenta-
rios, colaboraciones, etc… El entra-
mado futuro cada vez se asemeja a
una tela de araña casi infinita. El as-
pecto democrático de esta tendencia
es absoluto, aunque la falta de con-
trol en la distribución de contenidos
también presenta ciertos problemas,
pero eso es tema de otro artículo.
El flamenco no es ajeno a todo esto.
Mi portal, Jondoweb, en el fondo
empezó siendo eso, lo que ahora se
conoce como un blog. La diferencia
está en que mi intención no era, ni
es la de exponer mi opinión, sino
la propia divulgación del flamenco.
Claro que uno siempre le imprime su
personalidad a lo que hace.
Nuestra evolución nos ha llevado
a ofrecer más servicios, a ampliar
nuestras primeras expectativas en
círculos concéntricos, y partiendo
del análisis y puesta en marcha de
un plan económico privado y sin de-
pendencia de las instituciones públi-
cas, nuestra intención sigue siendo
crear contenidos de calidad y rigu-
rosos, con la premisa de dignificar y
divulgar el flamenco en sus formas
más genuinas por todo el mundo, y
para que el verdadero beneficiario
sea el mundo del flamenco.
Intentamos ofrecer una mirada obje-
tiva, crítica y generosa de los nuevos
discos, los libros, la actuación en
directo, los nuevos artistas; quere-
mos constituirnos como plataforma
de promoción, como canal para la
comunicación de investigaciones,
como tribuna de opinión y, en los úl-
timos tiempos, siguiendo la filosofía
de la red 2.0, la confección de con-
tenidos multimedia de libre acceso y
libre configuración.
Cada una de las secciones de este
portal obedece a una o todas de es-
tas premisas u objetivos : Reseñas,
Noticias, Entrevistas, Galerías de
promoción, Conferencias, Revistas,
Investigación, Boletines (para usua-
rios registrados), y Jondoweb Radio.
El siguiente paso... Bueno, estamos
trabajando, pero si no se lo cuento,
igual consigo que la curiosidad le
empuje a visitar el portal. Ojalá le val-
ga la pena. Le aseguro que me hon-
raría enormemente y, en mi fuero
interno, crecen las ganas de seguir
trabajando ante tal perspectiva…

The flamenco in internet
My public is not in Internet…
Then it will be the only person who is not in Internet
First of all, I want to thank for Juan Jose Romera who has considered of interest the humble contributions that I can do to this publication. That is something that flatters to
me and thus I want to show it publicly; but not only I feel flattered; also I feel it jeopardise. It jeopardise with him and you who you are reading to me and, mainly, with the
subject that occupies to us, that absorbs great part of my time and consumes good part of my energies. So I request indulgence for vaguenesses that will happen, surely,
of the hand of the illusion and the vehemence that always imposes the passion.
I do not think necessary to be
exhaustive at the time of calibra-
ting the importance of Internet in
our society, because the majority
of the presents is good connois-
seurs of the media, but some data
can help to understand which is its
true dimension to that is not fami-
liarised with it:
- According to red.es, the inclu-
sion of Internet in Spain arrives at
43.9% of the homes with 19 mi-
llion considered users.
- A survey realised by the finder
Ask in Spain, revealed that one
of each of three people has made
their purchases of Christmas
through the Network.
- The 80% of the people who has
made a purchase of half high
amount, consult all the data and
the comparative in Internet before
making the decision from purcha-
se.
When 5 years ago I began to con-
sider Internet like means to share
my taste by the flamenco one I
did, it enough with less credibility,
because my previous experience
with `network of networks’ limited
the vision of a normal user `’, the
vision of which looks for contents
and not of it creates which them.
By professional deformation I de-
duced that Internet can be used
for many activities, and that anyo-
ne of these exist devices able to
develop them better:
- To upload length texts on the
Web, so that it reads them to the
navigator, is, in certain way, an
error, because the communica-
tion written in Internet has to be
objective, direct and impressive if
we want to attract the attention of
the user. The avidity of contents,
the haste to see, to find, is ene-
my of the calm that requires the
exercise of the reading. The book
reader continues being that, rea-
ding of books, and detests of the
screen.
- One of the possibilities that offers
us Internet is to listen to music, so
there is to wait for a time to that
the sonorous file lowers and we
listened to soon it in loudspeakers
of bad quality; and that when the
sonorous quality of the file is not
jeopardises by a bad conversion
or an inadequate compression.
And in the hall we have an equi-
pment of hi-fi which remotely we
remembered.
- The video is another one of the

tions still are sufficiently slow like

dominion and to pay a reasonable
price by the lodging in a server;
and the format is only limited by
the imagination and the dominion
of the technology, and with res-
pect to this last one, less and less
due to the irruption of managers
of more and more intuitive content
of handling. Therefore, the quali-
ties that make it special are three:
That, since we have seen, a great
infrastructure is not needed, the
rapidity of elaboration of the con-
tents allows to levels of update

very fast and that it allows the in-
teractivity of immediate form.
The greater advantage is, without
a doubt, the interactivity because

After making this reflexion, I belie-
ve that they will be able to unders-
tand my experience with Internet:
I began with this of Internet of
accidental form. It had never ha-
ppened oneself to me that I could
be a generator of contents until a
day in which a local vestibule pro-
posed to me to write something. I
thought that of the best thing than
I could write was about flamenco,
since it is a passion that culture
from boy. And the best thing than
could contribute to means and to
the flamenco one generally, it was
to generate contents of flamenco
the near one me, and so distant to
the rest of the world. The flamen-
co in Almeria, that although exist,
and with an own idiosyncrasy,
enough is not known. The two pa-
ges that proposed to me finished
being a vestibule whose prepara-
tion cost me 2 years of work.
It was called Almeria Cabal and it

he was first site that contained all
the flamenco one of a province.
Luckily it lasted what lasted, very
just a short time. I say and it be-

was imperfect in its conception.
No had commercial strategy. That

tem of financing. Thus, which be-
gan being an illusory project; it fi-
nished being a terrible deception.

another project, that is, really, the
one that has taken to me to write
these lines. I learnt that the pa-
rameters that govern a project in
Internet are the same that must
serve basic in any company that
boasts, although the main target
does not have predicted the eco-
nomic benefit. That is to say, it is
necessary to design a commercial
strategy, is necessary to generate
a product and a service of quality,
is necessary to use different tech-
niques from marketing, although it
is of an intuitive form, and mainly,
it is necessary to be constant.
But also I learnt that it is not ne-
cessary to contribute to the net-
work those things to which the
others do not have access. Also
quality contents can be created
starting off of one same one.
Already 6 years ago it was bapti-
zed with the name of blogosfera to

a phenomenon that has revolutio-
nised the Network: extraordinarily
simple managers of contents that
provide intuitive tools and with
that any person can create her
own space in which to publish the
news, opinions, to receive com-
mentaries, collaborations, etc…
The future framework every time
is resembled a fabric of almost
infinite spider. The democratic as-
pect of this tendency is absolute,
although the lack of control in the
distribution of contents also pre-
sents/displays certain problems,
but that is subject of another ar-
ticle.
The flamenco one is not other
people’s to all this. My web page,
Jondoweb, at heart began be-
ing that, which now is known like
blog. The difference is in which my
intention was not, nor is the one
to set out my opinion, but the own
spreading of the flamenco one.
Clear that one always prints to him
its personality to which it does.
Our evolution has taken to us to
offer more services, to extend ours
first expectations in concentric cir-
cles, and dividing of the analysis
and beginning of a private econo-
mic plan and without dependency
of the public institutions, our in-
tention continues being to create
rigorous contents of quality and,
with the premise of dignify and
disclosing the flamenco one in its
more genuine forms by everybo-
dy, and so that the true beneficiary
is the world of flamenco.
We try to offer an objective, criti-
cal and generous glance of new
discs, the books, the action in di-
rect, the new artists; we want to
constitute itself like platform of
promotion, channel for the com-
munication of investigations, like
tribune of opinion and, lately, fo-
llowing the philosophy of network
2,0, the preparation of contents
multimedia of free access and
free configuration.
Each one of the sections of this
web obeys to one or all of these
premises or objectives: summa-
ries, news, interviews, galleries
of promotion, conferences, ma-
gazines, investigation, bulletin (for
registered user), and Jondoweb
Radio.
The next step... Well, we are wor-
king, but if not the story, it is sure
that the curiosity pushes to him to
visit the web. Hopefully it is wor-
th the pain to him. I assure to him
that it would honour to me enor-
mously and, in my internal law,
grow the desire to continue wor-
king so before perspective…

Patricia Guerreo, una carrera meteórica donde has conseguido los mayores galardones en un tiempo
record. Nacida en el barrio granadino del Albaycin, donde te subes con apenas 8 años en un esce-
nario y siete años más tarde (2007) te haces acreedora del premio “El Desplante Minero”, máximo
galardón que concede al baile el Concurso Internacional del Cante de las Minas que se celebra en La
Unión (Murcia).
Háblanos de tus principios,
¿cuando empezaste a bailar y
porqué?
Empecé porque mi madre tenía
una escuela, de niñas pequeñitas
en un colegio y yo siempre estaba
por allí dando vueltas, realmente
empecé ahí. No sé, si mi madre
no hubiese bailado supongo que
me hubiera interesado por mi
misma. Algo hubiera hecho, pero
el empujón total sin duda fue ver
desde pequeña a mi madre bailar
y dar clases. A partir de ahí ella
me llevó a muchos profesores y
bailaores, “con la Presi” una mujer
de aquí de Granada, entre otros
y a partir de entonces empecé a
conocer muchos otros profesores
y ese fue el empujón. Pero mi pri-
mer interés por el baile, fue moti-
vado por mi madre, porque desde
que yo era una niña la he visto
bailar.
En tu etapa inicial, te rodeaste de
los más grandes bailadores de
Granada, quienes fueron y destá-
canos algo de cada uno.
Si, si, la verdad que mucha gente
me ayudó y de todos he cogido
y aprendido muchas cosas. Tam-
bién estuve mucho tiempo con

Born in the district from Granada of the Albaycin, where you hardly rise with 8 years in a scene and

Tell us about your beginnings,
when did you begin to dance
and why?
I began because my mother had
a school, of little girls in a school
and I have always been there tur-
ning around, really began there. I
do not know, if my mother wouldn’t
have danced I suppose that it had
interested me by the same way.
Something would have done, but
the total push without a doubt was
to see my mother dancing and gi-
ving classes. From there she took
me to professors and flamenco
dancers (bailaores), with “La Pre-
si” a woman of here of Granada,
among others and from then I be-
gan to meet many other professors
and that was the push. But my first
interest towards the dance was
motivated by my mother, because
since I was a little girl I have seen
her dancing.
In your initial stage, you su-
rrounded yourself by the grea-
test dancers of Granada, who
were and emphasize us some-
Luis de Luis, también Comercia-
les Ruiz me ayudó mucho y así
mucha gente más. Estela Arauzo
también estuve un tiempo con ella
y ya pues he hecho cursos con
todo el mundo, con todos los bue-
nos: Hierbabuena, Belén Maya,
con muchisima gente. Y por su-
puesto uno de los que más me
ayudo fue Mario Maya, no solo
por su escuela, sino también por
incluirme en su compañía solo
con quince años y eso fue para mí
una experiencia total para el pos-
terior desarrollos de mi profesión.
Escenarios de tu barrio El Albai-
cin, la reconocida Peña granadina
de La Platería fueron los primeros
escenarios que pisaste, cuénta-
nos un poco de esta etapa
Si, fueron los primeros. El primer
escenario que pisé con guitarra y
cantaor fue La Platería. Para mí la
platería ha sido un apoyo muy im-
portante, no solo por la gente que
lo lleva, además por el apoyo que
me han dado desde el principio y
por las incontables veces que han
contado conmigo desde que era
pequeña yo he actuado muchí-
simo allí. La Platería es como si
fuera mi segunda casa, se podría

Yes, they were the first. The first
scene that I stepped on with gui-
tar and flamenco singer was the

portantes con esta compañía.
¿Qué te ha supuesto profesio-
nalmente esta andadura?
Me ha ayudado un montón tra-
bajar en la compañía de Mario,
especialmente destacaría que
aprendí a ver como el como mo-
vía a la gente, como organizaba
el espectáculo y para eso él era
un maestro. Yo he aprendido un
montón de verlo, de estar ahí. Y
esa etapa me supuso una mente
abierta de cómo podría hacer mis
cosas encima de un escenario.
Llega agosto de 2007 y te ha-
ces acreedora del premio “El
Desplante Minero”, máximo
galardón que concede al baile
el Concurso Internacional del
Cante de las Minas que se ce-
lebra en La Unión (Murcia). Há-
blanos de este premio y que te
ha supuesto en tu carrera pro-
fesional, en que te ha marcado.
Platería. For me Platería has been
a very important support, not only

a scene.

Si, esto si que marca. Y no marca
por el hecho de que has ganado
un premio y ya está. No, marca
porque la gente ha oído tu nom-
bre, saben quién eres, saben que
has ganado, y entonces la gente
piensa: a ver, a ver si es verdad,
a ver que hace ahora. Y es en-
tonces cuando lo que vale no es
haber ganado el premio lo que
importa, sino lo que yo demues-
tre a partir de ahí. Y mi obligación
es demostrar cada día que soy
merecedora del mismo. Mucha
responsabilidad también, porque
la gente te mira de otra manera,
como exigiéndote realmente. Este
premio me ha abierto muchas
puertas y ha permitido que mucha
gente me conozca. Para que una
persona también se abra camino
en el mundo del flamenco debe
presentarse a concursos.
¿Cuál es tu siguiente objetivo
profesional?
Pues ahora mismo estoy viviendo
en Sevilla y centrada en aprender

Yes, this marks totally. And it does
not mark because you have won a
prize and that’s it. No, marks be-
cause the people have heard your
name, they know who you are, they
know that you have won, and then
the people think: ok, well if it’s true,
so she will doing now. And then
what it matters it is not have won
the prize, but I demonstrate since
that moment. And my obligation is
to demonstrate every day that I am
deserving of the same, much res-
ponsibility too, because the people
look you different, as they are rea-
lly asking you too much. This price
has opened me many offers and
let me that a lot of people know
me. So that a person has possibi-
lities in the world of Flamenco, this
person must present to contests.

Estoy asistiendo a muchas cla-
ses, ya sabes que en Sevilla hay
una importante oferta formativa
en este sentido. Pero sobre todo
estoy disfrutando mucho de lo
que estoy haciendo ahora mismo.
Ahora me toca una etapa donde
dedico más tiempo a estudiar
y formarme sin desatender mis
compromisos profesionales.
¿Quién te ha ayudado? Como
se suele decir en los momentos
buenos y en los malos momen-
tos, que supongo habrán sido
muchos.
Si, un montón de gente. Pero es-
pecialmente mi madre, mi padre
y mi familia. En todo momento
dulce o amargo he contado con
su apoyo incondicional. Pero so-
bretodo mi madre, porque ella ya
conoce este mundo y sabe lo que
es... ella ha sido mi principal apo-
yo, ha estado siempre ahí.

What is your next professional
task?
In this moment I am living in Se-
ville and balanced in learning and
improving my style and technique.
I am attending a lot of classes; you
know that in Seville there is an im-
portant formative offer in this mat-
ter. But above all I’m enjoying a lot
with the things that I am doing in
this moment. Now I have a stage
where I dedicate more time to stu-
dy and to train me without neglect
my professional engagements.
Who did you help you? As it is
used to say in good moments
and in bad moments that I su-
ppose that they has been much.
Yes, much people, especially my
mother, my father and my family. In
all bad or good moment I have had
their unconditional support, but
above all my mother, because she
knows already this world and she
knows what it is... she has been
my main support, she has always
been there.
