Witches in Macbeth

Witchcraft is the term for using magical powers and

the supernatural to control people, events and
happenings. Most human societies believed in
witchcraft.
In Shakespeare’s time, people believed that witches
could:
 Control the weather
 Could sink ships
 Had the power of flight
 Had the ability to make people go mad
 Could vanish into thin air
 Usually worked at night
 Had contact with the devil
 Were able to cast spells by chanting and making
potions
 Could see into the future.
In this play, which powers did the witches in Macbeth
show?
In Shakespeare’s time, people did not have
the knowledge, understanding and
technology that we do today. Therefore,
when things went wrong, people tried to
explain it in other ways. During this time,
people believed in witches and often blamed
their own misfortune on witches or
witchcraft.

When Shakespeare wrote the play, the King

was James 1. It was well known that he was
terrified of witches. He was so scared of
witches that he got parliament to pass a law
promising death to anyone practising
witchcraft. This led to widespread witch-
hunts. Shakespeare was quick to pick up on
this by making the witches evil characters.
