The system of indertureship works in the way that a person, mainly male would be under terms of servitude toward someone for usually two years or more, and they are released once there terms of indentureship is done. Life was not very good because even once they were freed it was hard for them to get a job and to get land. 3. What powers did a proprietor have? Proprietors had the power to own and establish a colony, to have exclusive rights to ownership of their said colony and to grant land to settlers. 4. Why was Maryland founded? How did it differ from the Virginia colony? Maryland was founded so that the Catholics could have a place to live and practice their religion without any prejudice. The Virginia colony on the other hand was founded to get land in the Americas and to make money. 5. Why were the back-country settlers such an annoyance to the colonial government? The back- country settlers were such an annoyance to the colonial government because they didn't want to be part of a government grounded in low country interests. 6. How was agriculture and the economy in New England different from that in the South? In the South the soil was more fertile and wet. Therefore, their economy was more based off of plants like tobacco and cotton, so agriculture was a big part of how they made their money. In New England the soil was dry and rocky so their economy was more in the fishing and making things industry. So agriculture wasn’t that big a part of New England economy. 7. What were some of the religious beliefs of the early Puritans who settled in New England? Why were they called Puritans? Some religious beliefs the puritans believed that church and state should be as one and not separate, and they believed that the Church of England needed to be like them. They were called Puritans because they wanted to purify the English church. 8. According to their leader, John Winthrop, what did the Puritans believe to be their purpose in coming to America? John Winthrop believed the purpose of Puritans coming to America was to build a “City Upon A Hill” and that he knew God wanted him and other Puritans to build a holy community and help others to be like them. They were also getting away from religious prosecution that they had faced in England. 9. What threats did Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson pose to the Massachusetts Bay leadership? Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson both believed that the church and state should be separate, and this posed a big threat because the Puritans were very set in their ways and didn’t want anyone questioning them. Also, Hutchinson wanted to have her voice heard in the church and having any kind of power as a woman was not accepted. 10. What was the basis of economic wealth in the New England colonies? Because the New England areas didn’t have good soil for plantations the basis of their economy was trading with the West Indies, fishing, and other manufacturing like shipbuilding. 11. What sort of social order took root in the Carolinas? Why was it different from that proposed under Carolina's Fundamental Constitution? The Carolinas weren’t very united in anything other than their name, the North and South didn’t really get along and Lord Baltimore wanted any colonists who lived there to give annual payments from them. But Shasftesbury wanted a planned and well-ordered community and the Fundamental Constitution for Carolina created an elaborate system of land distribution and a social order. 12. How did southern Carolina's close ties with the British island of Barbados influence the development of the colony's society? British islands of Barbados influenced the colonies society because African slavery took root in Barbados way before any mainland colonies, so when people from that area began to come to Carolina they brought African slaves with them and helped encourage the importing of African slaves. 13. Whydid the English resent the Dutch presence in America? The English didn’t want the Dutch in America because it served as a wedge between the northern and southern English colonies. And it gave bases for Dutch smugglers evading English customs laws. 14. Whywas Georgia founded? How was it different from the other British colonies? Unpaid trustees led by James Oglethorpe founded Georgia and they were interested in economic success. But they were driven mainly by military, philanthropic motives and helping impoverished who needed to begin anew. It was different because most other English colonies founded colonies because of religious or economic reasons, none of them for military and helping out others find a home. 15. Why did social and political tensions eventually occur in the Pennsylvania colony? Some residents of Pennsylvania were beginning to resist the nearby absolute power of the proprietor. The southerners particularly thought the government in Philly was unresponsive to their needs.
