The alumni/ae of St.

Xavier’s College, Kolkata are pledging for a new

scholarship scheme for the underprivileged students of the college at
the tune of around Rs. 10 lakhs on the occasion of the Birthday of the
Principal of the College and the President of its Alumni Association Rev.
Fr. Dr. J. Felix Raj, SJ. This year, St. Xavier’s College (Calcutta) Alumni
Association (SXCCAA) is observing the Birthday of the Father
President/Principal as the Philanthropy Day on 28 August, when this
scholarship fund will be handed over to the College at a function.

In this special scholarship scheme instituted on the occasion of

completion of 150 years of the college and 25 years of its alumni
association, each alumnus/alumna contributes Rs. 25,000 per
scholarship, out of which an underprivileged student will be given Rs.
2,000 per month for one year to supplement his/her academic related
requirements other than tuition fees, which are exempted by the
college itself. This scheme was initiated in the first International
Convention of the association held in Bangkok recently in response to
the stand taken by the Principal Fr. Felix Raj to open the college gate
to the first generation college goers, who come from the weaker
sections of the society. “The response has been very encouraging”,
said Father Felix Raj, “as it helps the college’s stand to give admission
to the underprivileged students, as a social commitment of the Jesuit
Missionaries”.

Apart from these scholarships, the SXCCAA will also provide text books
to the schools books for the libraries, computers, sewing machines,
wheel chairs to the villages adopted by the college and nurtured by its
NSS unit and the alumni association.

“With all these philanthropic activities the SXCCAA likes to rededicate

to the motto of the Jesuit Alumni/ae: Men and Women for Others,
especially on the 150th year of the College and the 25th year of its
alumni association”, said the SXCCAA spokesperson.
