Classification of various stages of Cervical Cancer using Image

process techniques

Cervical cancer is the second most form of cancer among Indian women. It

accounts to thousands of deaths each and every year. This is due to lack of

awareness about Cervical cancer and lack of availability of Cervical cancer

screening on a large scale. Cervical cancer usually begin with pre-cancerous

stage and develops into various stages and finally invasive cancer. There are

three stages of neoplasia. The general condition of Cervical abnormality is called

as Cervical intra epithelial neuplasia (SIN) and the relative degree of abnormality

corresponding to the various stages are CIN-1, CIN-2 and CIN-3 in the order of

increasing seventy. It is interesting to note that 50% of CIN1 and CIN2

spontaneously regions without treatment. A few case of SIN3 have also known

to be regions spontaneously. However women with CIN3 do have a significant

risk of developing invasive canver.

Although automated system like PAPNET and AUTOPAP has been developed, no

emphasis has been given for the classification for the various stages of neo-

plasia. The widely used method of screening known as Papsmear test will help in

detecting cancer visually. But due to enormous volume of data it is literally

impossible to screen all the smears manually. To redue the risk of cervical

cancer screening has to be done at the regular internal. The normal clarification

of cytologist or cytotechnoligant or cyto-pathologist are belonging to one of

these four groups, negative abnormal positive, unsatisfactory, (unsatisfactory for

evalap). There are also chanves for mis-evaluation of slides by a cytologist.

Hence there is a necessity of classification or grouping the samples into various

stages for further evaluation and treatment.
